Who is the most successful journeyman?

Great replies.

Unless a boxer is promoted and bankrolled by a TV promoter they fall into two categories:
1) Those who can sell tickets and support the finances of a home bill. They are the home boxer
2) Those who do not become journeymen.

It is a real shame but that is the harsh financial reality. The journeyman will normally be overmatched as the home boxers manager will always want between a 60/40 and 90/10 advantage.

So you have many boxers becoming journeyman as they do not have the social network to sell tickets.

So boxing is not what you know, but who you know?

loosely speaking...boxing is rigged. i know for a fact that boxers, who were winning fights against people the promoter did not want them to beat, have stepped off the gas or retired with spurious injuries !!

Not true,mate.I know a few lads who have gone in with little chance,but they were never "told to lose"

Sometimes it's down to their managers. Yassine El Maachi, for example, was originally seen as a journeyman because his manager when he first turned over told him to take whatever short notice fights he could get.

As we now know Yassine is a talented fighter and could win titles. He's got proper management now who want to see him reach his potential. Originally he didn't have that support.

it is true..... ive heard it from the horses mouths, win and you dont get anymore work?... and steel city has freely admitted that his charges never look nor try to KO a journeyman as you would be taking food from his/their mouths.

I dont agree,mate.Yes,i have heard of not knocking out the journeyman,but they had no chance of winning in the first place.Its just making sure they can still earn a wage for the next month.But i know a few guys who have boxed at literally all levels and not one has been told to lose.

Ive a mate who used to box; Kasi Kaihau. We were watching a boxing programme about 12 months ago; (it may have been KOTV). There was an interview with Ahmet Oner who is a big promoter in Germany. Kasi said that he'd boxed him and had been told to take it easy, that he was there to make him Ahmet look good. Oner hit him pretty hard and Kasi hit him back pretty hard. When he got back to his corner Kasi got a bollocking. He's no need to lie about it; it is years ago. he swears that he was told not to go for the win and to make the other guy look good.

I think if you look at Ohner,there may have been more things in play....

2 examples of guys who were heading for journeymen careers but turned it round and became world champ are Steve Robinson (13-9-1 before his late notice title shot) and johnny nelson ( lost his first 3). There will always be guys who turn pro without much amateur experience and improve. If they keep winning there is a way to the top but it is obviously a lot tougher than having a good promoter from the start.

Del Bryan and Chris Saunders were pretty much working the circuit, losing some and learning and then came good championship boxers.
