One of the weirdest things I've ever seen is Gerry Cooney on the ring apron taking photos of Larry Holmes against Leon Spinks in 1981.
I never gave Cooney the slightest chance against Larry a year later.

Cooney was the best fighter who could have and should have been champ but wasn't. Horribly mismanaged. He could have and should have KO'd Homes that night.

Tex Cobb is a very interesting guy. He went back to college and recently earned his degree, and of course he's also had a very successful acting career. His ex-wife showed up on one of these boxing forums. She thought the world of him, as I recall. Pretty unusual for an ex-wife.

I respect your opinion on this matter and without wishing to derail an entertaining thread, I have to say I could not disagree more.

Cooney was a one hand banger, which was never enough to beat a fighter of Holmes calibre, however, as I said you are entitled to your opinion.

PS See if you can find any footage of Tony Wilson's mum and her stilletto attack. Kind of surreal, to be sure. :TU:

I've seen it, and surreal is right. The most surreal part being her son was awarded the win, and she wasn't arrested for assault and battery. Like I said, hey, this is boxing, just one step down from Vince McMahon's wrasslin' shows!

As for Cooney and Holmes, yes we sure do disagree.

Maybe the people at ring side thought that it was perhaps filming a pilot for a new television show for the BBC,
a remake of "Sanford &Son,and that she was the "Aunt Esther" character.

Hasn't anyone here seen the Berbick-Rahman fight?
If it is on the USA network Boxing dvd's,
I wouldnt be surprised if they replaced the entire ring audio with another voice over.

So the commentary was the issue then? Because if that's the case, that is a strange going on outside the ring, not inside the ring. But what the hell since it's been brought up and nobody has yet to describe what the big deal was. Can someone make with the details for crying out loud.

I agree, it was one of the stranger things you'd see in a while. I didn't catch it live, but I think had I, I'd have been speechless on the spot, too!

What, you never heard the maxim, "Some things are better left to the imagination?"

Rest assured though, Gil, it was something else to see, alright! :TU:

Steve had a racist element of fans (not Steve's fault, of course), shouting obcenities at ringside, which naturally, upset Tony's Mum and she decided to take matters into her own hands - Cue stilleto heel to the back 'o' the 'ead.

Tony did bash Steve up in the rematch. Could only find a record of one fight, but I am positive they had 2 fights.
To think Wilson was granted a TKO win. Wow. I know the logic behind it (McCarthy refused to resume boxing after the ref ordered the fight to continue) but surely a ring invasion on behalf of one boxer prompts an automatic disqualification.

Especially by a feloniously assaulting (why wasn't she arrested?) member of his immediate family! But then this is pro boxing we're talking about, one step below Vince McMahon's pro wrasslin "sports entertainment" shows.
As it wasn't one of Wilson's cornermen the ref had to call for the fight to continue, brave decision by the ref as he was stood in the middle of Southampton.

I remember watching the Danny Williams-Mark Potter on Youtube and I was thinking how can Williams carry on with his shoulder hanging out of it's socket like that and the pain must have been horrific and then suddenly he pulls out the knockdown and later the stoppage in the same round and I was just sitting there and thinking Danny Williams you really are one tough son of a bitch fighting one with your shoulder hanging it's socket like that.

I am also I am not sure if this counts as strange but I will chuck this one in anyway but what about the 10th round of Jose Luis Castillo-Diego Corales I where Corales gets knocked down, making the round a 10-8 spits the mouth piece out to buy some time to get himself together, gets up then about 15-20 seconds goes down making a 10-7 round and spits the mouth piece out again and then referee Tony Weeks takes a point off for that now making it potentially a 10-6 if Corales gets out of the round at all and his left eye is pretty much swollen shut and then realises he is now so far behind in the fight he has going to win by a knockout, so what does he do.... goes for the knockout and gets it.

(starts at 5:40 in the video - )
LOL! Was the source really unexplained? I assume it was played through the loudspeaker, but it certainly seems to have no rhyme or reason. Fades as quickly as it begins, too. I wonder if Burton's smiling was the result of the music kicking in.

It's so strangely inappropriate to be listening to in the heart of battle. Way too laid-back as a form of music for a Boxing match
