Pascal, Hopkins etc would be way too much at any time for cleverley.

Has done well to get where he has, but I don't see him as a world champion for very long

I thought he was carrying too much body fat at cruiser and could slim down. I thought he was back training with Enzo Calzaghe and it was him who'd convinced him to go down to LHW. I'm not sure where I got that from but I'm sure that's what I heard. Those LHW's won't punch as hard, I guess they're thinking.

I'd be interested to see what Maccarinelli's got left. I always liked him.

Cleverly is basically Enzo Maccarinelli, minus the power, but blessed with a better chin. They have the same flaws and have been trained (badly) the same way.

Hopkins-Cleverly would be embarrassing. Cleverly really doesn't want to go there.

Firs couple of times I saw Cleverly I was really impressed but the last 2-3 outings have left me worried. He’s got great dimensions, engine, body punching and is durable. But it’s as if he forces everything he does.

I’d like to see him sit behind his jab for a few rounds and capitalise on the other guy’s errors. He’s tall and has a great reach but never uses it.

Instead he wants to bore in and then he’s the one making the mistakes. Against the world’s best he’s going to get caught out.

Also, he’s got his WBO belt now and is he just going to stay training in Wales in his comfort zone? He should be going to the US, mixing it with the very best… he needs to be challenged.

I like the guy’s attitude. He’s a great role model. And his left hook to the body is one of my faves but he needs to change his tactics and sharpen his game.

yes, one thing that cleverly does have is the workrate and the aggression and fitness - unlike pascal.

on the other hand, the only fighters hopkins will face these days are those with serious defensive issues (pavlik, and he called out froch, and obviously fought pascal twice). and cleverly has some of those.

while i don't think we'll have the agonising decade long wait as with the calzaghe era, i do think cleverly needs to be built up into a mature fighter, before stepping up. i like what he does, getting stuck in at domestic and euro level (macintosh for the former, murat and kuziemski for the latter). but now they should bring in a decent world class fighter, like perhaps campillo (slick, peppering southpaw); or the WBA champ, shumenov. someone that the boxing media agrees as being a legit top 10 fighter.

Yes early on I was very impressed, but now he seems to be becoming a little entranced with his own punching. At top level, that just won't work, you're going to get hit and hurt.

Hopefully it's just a bit of psychology which his camp can change. He is a very accurate puncher, but he seems to have lost the patience that characterised his early career.

I might be wrong but it seems to me like he wants to win the hard way so as to excite the fans a bit more... He needs to continue to work at his game and improve. But he's a great advert for the sport.

I think you are right, and also his power suddenly appeared almost overnight and I think once he started smacking people about, he wanted to do it more.

His power has come on, but I still feel it will be an issue at the highest level. He hasn't floored any of his last three opponents.

Just using Hopkins name to grab headlines i think. Nothing new with boxers doing that.

The fact a guy put £96,000 down on Clev to win just £6,000 shows the level of opposition Clev is fighting, yet still getting tagged by.

I reckon FW will wait until Hopkins is definitively on the slide and age finally catches up to him, maybe in couple of years time. As for Enzo Macc, I'd predict another brutal painful to watch KO for poor Enzo.

Surely these two would sell out a stadium in Cardiff? Hokins would look at Cleverly as a green fighter who was beatable.

Cleverly on the other hand would bring youth and a high work-rate. He'd have to work on not taking Hopkins' measured counters and right hand leads but he'd win rounds simply by throwing more leather.

Exactly.

It's all about years of rock-solid conditioning.

He's been laying such good foundations that his body is programmed like that now.

It's like underwater divers who hold their breath for 8 minutes. It takes years to build it up and maintain and Hopkins has found the stride / pace that suits him. He knows when to breathe, when to hold back, when to press the attack so he never runs out of gas.
