With all due respect to the guys that train under Gallagher though Saf, i dont think it is particularily good sparring! For me theres a big difference between the sparring you get at the wildcard with guys like Manny pacquaio and the sparring you get at Gallaghers gym. Most of those guys like Crolla, the Smith Brothers, the Murray brothers, etc are british level fighters and dont compare to the world class sparring you get at the wild card gym.
Judging by the spar against a guy who has not turned pro yet at wild card, as shown on tv, maybe not all the time, plus I think Manny is spending most of his training camp in his own country nowadays, if Freddie is not giving him enough time, what can he do, also Freddie costs him 15% of his purse, so is he worth it now ? Don't get me wrong, Gallagher is not my choice, but could happen as a matter of convenience, I would pick people like Mcgurt, Whitticker, Steward, Mayweather sr in Britain Oliver Harrison who he should not have left in the first place, I think he was getting to close to Amir at the time and Amir's family were fighting for control.

People make me laugh. Talk about quality level of sparring in wildcard ? Khan was getting leathered 2 weeks ago by a american based eastern European who had not even had a pro fight while roach was away with Chavez jr. Like someone else said khan has never even been 2nd to paquiao, more like 3rd or 4th. For me Roach is not the super trainer people have always had him down has. Everybody jumps on these bandwagons about this one or that one is the best trainer, well your only has good a trainer has the quality fighter you've got working with you. Khan has always had fast hands and fast feet, what else has roach done for him? Nothing that's what, khan still falls in with his shots, defence is still shit, it's the same has the master plan man that is Adam booth, another shit trainer, he's lucky that Haye is naturally talented and hits extremely hard, because he's predictable faint, faint, faint shit is useless, if you can move and make Haye miss with his 1-2 he's appalling, his balance is that bad because his feet are that wide apart it's frightening, that's where a real tactioner like Emmanuel steward had his number, keep him off balance and he's not affective. Any trainer can basically do the same it's the fighter that makes the trainer not the trainer that makes the fighter. That's only my opinion, not saying I'm right before anyone jumps on my case but not saying I'm wrong either, it's just my honest opinion.

the issue arises with khan wanting to be the no1 priority in his new gym.

if you share the gym with pound for pound greats you are not going to be no1,
if you are no1 in your gym it's probably because you share it with lower level stablemates and will likely have to settle for weaker opposition in sparring

bit of a catch 22, but a compromise khan is going to deal with.
there aren't many world class trainers out there with empty gyms and no-one to train that he can just walk in and be the main man, particularly not in bolton one would imagine

Good post :TU: Its like a merry go round at times with the fighters blaming trainers etc and jumping ship when a new messiah appears on the horizon. Your only as good as the fighters you work with. Khans still got the same faults under Freddie Roach as he had under Mick Jelly, both tremendous coaches/trainers by the way.Sometimes you just reach your level and your technique/physical capabilities wont get any better. :TU:

There's something about Khan's inability to block an uppercut in close (& the vast gaping holes in his defence anyway) that would make me genuinely fear for his safety were he to adopt the Mancunian "style" (although I suppose you could say he's got half of it down already).
I dont think Gallagher would be a good fit for Khan myself.
Why? He seems to like getting hit in the face.

I think it'd be the best choice if Khan was to return to Britain. Dave Coldwell's been involved big fights, and has great experience for the time he's been about. He'd definitely improve Khans defence and tecnique!

got to say dont think it would be worst thing in the world for kahn to hook up with coldwell, ive followed daves progress since i boxed him in the amatuers and for a young guy he got a lot of experience and will only get better, so what if he not been at elite level i still bet he wudda had better game plan than roach did for kahn.

Khan is an elite boxer, he's not a superstar like in his head though. All the game plans and tactics go out of the window when a big punch lands well. Garcia may go on to be a fantastic champion and Amir may beat some top lightwelters and welters. I've seen other boxers noted for their bravery sit things out when they've been caught hard; at least Khan kept trying to get into it.

If Khan changes his strategies etc he may end up a boring jab and mover, conserving energy and clinching/clutching all the time. I'd sooner he boxes like he does; I don't like his media persona but he's entertaining to watch and in good fights.

Elite fight my arse. He's been knocked out twice and lost on the cards to three men who themselves are not elite.

The word 'elite' is bandied around waaaay too much.

Completely agree. The 'elite' of boxing are currently mayweather, Manny, Martinez, wlad etc. The only UK boxer that can be considered near that level is froch as he has fought the best out there and either won or been competitive in defeat.

He could do alot worse DC has performed a miracle considering
the state by his own admission Rhodes was in when they got together no one would have backed them to
achieve anything let alone regain titles beat a fighter like Moore and challenge for World honours.
He has converted Woodhouse from a novelty act in most peoples eyes into a fighter
who fights way above a level anyone if honest thought he could .
Khan wants to strip it bare spit and saw dust rebuild his rep somewhere even goldenboy couldn't
glamourise its got to be Rotherham .

If I were Khan I'd be making a beeline for Manny Steward. Has done a great job with Wlad (whose own chin was there to be blasted for a while) and also Lewis following big KO defeats... Khan has the cash to make it happen. If it was me advising him there would be noone else and I'd only be letting him fight at alternating dates to Klitschko

You are correct imo the trainer can only tweak the raw material(the boxer) If the raw material is no good in the first place it doesnt matter who the trainer is but having said that Amir is a real talent so a trainer closer to home could be just what he needs to get him back on track and would be much cheaper and it could be good for Amir instead of chasing roach all over the place Good Luck Amir

Theres a wisper that Dave coldwell is going to be Khans new trainer do you think this would be a good move as dave knows how to rebuild fighters, look at kell Brook and Ryan Rhodes he did good jobs with them and has also worked at the top with David haye as he was haymakers top guy there :TU:
I've just seen this post.. thanks very much but i don't really think you can go from Freddie Roach to me!!

In an ideal situation Manny Steward although if he is looking for home-grown he should go with Booth. Booth will at least give him time, as it’s looking likely Haye will retire again. Team Haymaker (Booth, Haye & Grooves) has a closeness that would benefit Khan IMO. He socialises with Haye and looks up to him. Khan may well need that arm put round him and he will get this from Booth and Haye.

You are aware that that's not 'the' Michael Gomez aren't you? And in fact the poster in question has probably named himself after the great Wilfredo Gomez, rather than some wild love for an obscure British journeyman.

Thanks for your valuable contribution to the discussion though.

Another good shout. It would certainly be a challenge for Booth and one that, if he wanted and could help Khan get back up there, with the States side exposure, could potentially catapult himself right up there with the big names.

A trainer comes up with a game plan to beat an opponent, Freddie Roach did one for AK but once again he just can not stick to it. AK has all the attributes to become a great boxer ( chin aside) and I feel that on his day he could beat most. If he works on his defence and then sticks to a devised game plan he will come back and shock a few of you. He does himself no favours in the sparring he does and the way he fought prior to the loss was just plain stupid.

Yeah, that’s the problem with Amir he believes the hype thinking he can slug it out when in trouble. He stuck to the plan against Kotelnik and showed him up. Roach clearly issues Khan with a plan although doesn’t follow it.
