Consistency?
Yeah, that matchup had me scratching my head.

I agree with all your comments on this thread Billy.

To be honest - it is even worse than that.

A boxer who is considered a journeyman is expected to put up an element of resistance, but ultimately to lose (as a consequence, they are happy to lose on points so that they don't get a suspension and can continue to earn, which does not make for an interesting fight for the spectator).

However, if the journeyman happens to get a win then what happens - the phone stops ringing and they don't get any work.

Therefore in effect, these boxers are paid to lose (which is even worse than not trying to win !).

We all know this, it is no big secret, but it is accepted.

We (hardcore fans) do...but how many of the friends and family buying a ticket know? I've seen loads on the edge of their seats watching a prospect win as he likes against a non-trier. How would they know? They're only there to support a family member or mate and many don't know anything about boxing.

Shite, really.

Sid isn't down and out yet. I hear he is appealing the decision. I think a severe reprimand would have sufficed and Sid would have upped his game and got the weigh off.

You will never get a continuous conveyor belt of prospect v prospect. I agree that the young lads today should be tested earlier and not get there records padded out too much but Promoters need journey men to make their promotions pay. A ticket selling debutant isn't going to go straight in against a "live" opponent. As Ian said the majority of his fans will just be happy if their guy wins. If the prospect loses straight away ticket sales dwindle and it makes it harder for the promoter to put shows on, so he does need a little protection early on. And it is 100% Important for debutants to get a few rounds under their belts early on too. It's a totally different ball game getting experience in the gym to performing infront of a thousand fans under the lights. I've seen monsters in the gym get eaten up by nerves and adrenaline on their debuts. It's not ideal for the purists amongst us who know how the system works but "journeymen" like Sid perform an important service on the bottom rung of the boxing ladder.

I agree there is a role for journeymen testing out debutants and novices etc but some are being thrown in against 10 and 0 fighters and really struggling to go the distance but having said that its always been like that

It's getting rarer now though. Most of sids opponents over his last dozen or so are all 1-0/3-0 with the exception of Coyle and Micky Hunter.

Buckley was regularly fighting champions in warm up fights at his peak, but dropped down to doing 4x2's against novices towards the end, you still need to be matched sensibly

But there's always been betting corruption and drugs in sport but the authorities don't let that go under the cqrpet(well most of the time they don't) I've witnessed with my own eyes a journeyman clearly being paid to lose but his opponent being that shite and tired that the journeyman just couldn't be bad enough to lose. Someone on here mentioned San Marino losing all the time on here. Well at least they try to win and aren't in a sport where people can be killed

Sid does need to be fit and in shape though, there is no excuse at any level for being overweight, this is a very dangerous sport and you are asking for trouble otherwise esp when you are regularly matched against better opponents

Does anyone have an example of a true journeymen getting a win or a draw and then the phone not ringing again? I hear this a lot as a reason for them not coming to win. I suspect it's only true for the "fringe" journeymen - the "prospects" of the journeymen world with mixed records.

If Sid or Jonny Greaves got a win they'd still get work!

Yup, which is why the Midland Area Council called Sid before it. Still think banning him was a step too far though. I remember Jason Nesbitt was under intense scrutiny at one point so he went out and Iced his opponent at a show I was at In about 30 seconds (Gavin Putney on a Earl show????). Matt Scriven did the same to Maughan at Nottingham when he was under contest reports. They can do it, but they don't as no one wants to match their prospect against them then. Vicious circle and all that.....

In my experience it never happened, as long as the matching is correct and the ref knows which side is buttered on you would never even need to do it.

Happened to Birminghams Andrew Patterson I believe. Had several bouts lined up, won one or two bouts and they all pulled out.

Not surprised, Paddy packs a decent dig and always comes to have a scrap. A right litel handful :box:

Yep pat won two fights by stoppage 3 fights already agreed were pulled withing a week.

And remember this wasnt an unbeaten lad going on a killer run hed won 1 and drew one of his previous 11 or 12 before this,
