In his day Witter was thrice the fighter Hatton is but right now is a different story. How many welters in Britain would go the distance with Alvarez and Brook? Agreed he's not a banger and not the most skillful fighter but what he lacks in those departments he makes up for with his toughness plus he's very experienced.danconnollyeire wrote:Surely Witter's a classier fighter than Hatton. that's true, some promoters won't work together, got a feeling it will be the same stable maybe Ronnie Heffron, but is Heffron ready ? Who else has Warren got at welter ? Al Harbi would be a good one if he can still do welter and Hatton would be the best match for Gavin, because he is known in the states as well as being a high profile name. Surely Warren's other welters are not in the picture ????maley1984 wrote:its going to b an fw fighter or matt hatton (unattached easy to make). no way will fw give a matchroom fighter a chance. id like to see frankie v nasser al harbi been made once why not again battle of brum big local show at the nia

Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
It's different though. Frankie mixed with the best of the best in the am world. That should give any fighter a huge head start for his pro career. I have always said top, top level ams who won major honours etc should be fighting at world level after about 4 years as a pro.JamesH wrote:Kell has had more than double the fights Frankie has had.
In Frankies 14th fight, he won the British title against Junior Witter.
Brooks 14th fight was an 8 rounder against Karl David 20-7-1.
Brooks first scalp of the level of Witter was probably Michael Jennings, who wasn't Witters level but you know what I mean. That was fight number 22 for Brook.
I'm not knocking Kell by any means, but lets not get too excited about age differences between two guys in their mid twenties.
Kell didn't have the am education Frankie had.
Two different cases really.
Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
So you can accept that they may be different cases for one argument, just not for the argument you put forward (age).lillywhite14 wrote:It's different though. There are more factors involved, fighters develop at different pace. Frankie spent a long time as an am and may therefore have taken longer to adapt to the paid ranks. They also eventually reach different peaks. They also retire at different ages.
Pricey turned pro a month after Gavin, they are both British champions. Both have had issues to explain the timeframe, if you care to look for them. Worry not how the cake looks while its baking, concern yourself with what it's like when it's ready.

I wasn't putting forward any argument!
For what it's worth I think Pricey is moving too slow too. Pulev turned pro after him yet he is looking at a world title shot already. The big difference between Price and Frankie is Price has completely demolished everyone he has faced so far, suggesting he is way above domestic level.
I hope they both reach the top.

Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
Without Gavin suffering cuts etc they should have him out every 6-8 weeks own the Lonsdale outright & shift through some international names & box for a world title as the welterweights are pretty weak apart from the untouchables that are PAC & money.

Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
I understand what you mean, I was probably a bit rash. My thinking is/was that someone like Tyson fought for world titles after a year and a half, Lewis had the am pedigree but took four years to get there. Horses for courses. Price is moving slow, but he had a change of team following a collapsed tv deal, these obstacles can delay progress. Time will telllillywhite14 wrote:I wasn't putting forward any argument!

Malinaggi,Alexander are terribly beatable.world boxing is a big pool & respectable titles are very winnable.007769 wrote:The welters at world level are week ? your joking ? cant be serious ?hurlock wrote:Without Gavin suffering cuts etc they should have him out every 6-8 weeks own the Lonsdale outright & shift through some international names & box for a world title as the welterweights are pretty weak apart from the untouchables that are PAC & money.

Your right on Malinaggi, he is beatable, but Alexander destroyed Witter, Ortiz is a beast, so is Berto and Bradley is very strong, they are all better then Witter at present and don't forget Kell Brook who is fast and powerfull, these are just a few at welter, it is a hard division, Gavin would be better at light welter.hurlock wrote:Malinaggi,Alexander are terribly beatable.world boxing is a big pool & respectable titles are very winnable.007769 wrote:The welters at world level are week ? your joking ? cant be serious ?hurlock wrote:Without Gavin suffering cuts etc they should have him out every 6-8 weeks own the Lonsdale outright & shift through some international names & box for a world title as the welterweights are pretty weak apart from the untouchables that are PAC & money.

I see Gavin abit fleshy at welter & really a l.welter.
Didn't know Alexander fought witter. But I take comparisons from witter v Judah & v Bradley & I don't think Bradley is no way near a great champion & Ortiz is an on top fighter & bertos going backwards

Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
hurlock, Witter is a much more a faded fighter then when he fought Bradley, he started to go downhill after the mauling from Alexander, Bradley put up a great fight against the Pacman, though he lost really, he is the right size for Gavin, but he is so mentally strong and would walk through Gavin's punches, Ortiz and Berto are very fast and hit too hard for Gavin, Judah outboxed Mayweather in the early rounds of their fight, lets not go too far at this stage, Gavin has won the British in a bad fight, he now needs to defend his title and prove he is number 1 at his weight in britain, add the commonwealth and then go for the european title, but the worlds best are too far away at present, he needs to fill out his body more and develop more power, evolve his boxing style to enable him to get in close without getting hit, use less energy, get some big wins under his belt against fringe world level fighters, then and only then can he take on the world best, this will take about 3 years at the earliest, providing Gavin don't get distracted again, but he won't do it unless he has a team of strength conditioners, nutricianists and maybe a top class trainer from the states, Khan did it that way and though Khan is a more aggressive and powerful fighter then Gavin, I think Gavin has better skills and technical ability, so it is possible, remember Malinaggi won a couple of world titles on skill and technical ability alone, only problem is Malinaggi american style is more suited to world championship level .hurlock wrote:I see Gavin abit fleshy at welter & really a l.welter.

Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
Peter Parker, great post !
I agree with nearly everything except the 3 year time scale, if Frankie does go the commonwealth/European route AND stay active (which I mean at least 5 fights per year) I believe he will only need two years max for world level, you mentioned khan as a comparison who if anything got to world level to soon ! Frankie is 27 already and though it's not old I wouldn't want to see him in a first world title shot at the age of 30 ! Only because the nature of the sport could could bring him down to only 2 fights per year and I believe that's not enough whilst at your peak.

I'm aware witter is a shell to his former self.agree with everything you wrote especially Gavin getting strength & conditioning experts in that will be vital to his developement

Gavin will never be no1 in Britain with Kell around, think if Purdy beats Jones he is also at that level slighty above. Hatton would be a good fight, or Vassell, Adil Anwar was English Welter champ but think he is going back LWW to fight Hamilton. Heffron isn't ready too if down European then Zaveck or Jackiewicz could be potentials but feel he should bea LWW.
Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
Frankie Gavin gave up the vest about the same time as some other top amateurs from across the water.
Since the beginning I have followed each of their careers to see how they compare.
And its very clear that Frankie is being rushed alot more than these other guys, with only Jesse Vargas facing similar awkward opponents thus far.
Lets remind ourselves that Frankie is still on the learning curve. The kid has only had 14 pro fights ... lets give him time!

Re: Who next for Frankie Gavin ?
The key to Frankie Gavin reaching the next level is regular bouts. If he is going to stay at welter, then I'd also like to see more muscle mass. I'd think with more dedication that Frankie would be lightwelter and that lack of dedication is what scares me.
Anyway, if he stays at welter, he needs a couple of British defences before May time next year, then see who is about at European level. Make no bones of it, it's going to be very hard work for Gavin.
Right now, I'd see Lee Purdy as a very good fight. I can't see Purdy beating Carson Jones, so if he loses that, I feel it's only a matter of time before Purdy has no where else to go with Matchroom. He might get lucky though if he continues to be on the Kell Brook undercards as he is surely a last minute replacement in the waiting.
It's time for Frankie to get serious but he is no where near the level of Paulie Malignaggi as someone has mentioned, yet.
Does anyone think that Frankie would beat Kell Brook? I just can't see it myself.

He hit Lomax pretty hard last time out Dan, he got Ted Bami out with one punch as well. Matthew is a good professional; I think he'd have too much for Frankie and win on points.danconnollyeire wrote:Surely Witter's a classier fighter than Hatton.
