Not looked into the this, but Buenos Aries is on the othe side of the River Plate estuary from Montevideo. I assume there are ferries between Monte and BA...flying to Monte may be cheaper/easier from the UK. Chile's pretty nice too...not been to Santiago but know a few who've been and said it's good.

The Falkland Islanders would have to be forced into independence, they have never wanted it and would never vote for it in any referendum.

The facts are, they are not British, tell me - do they have representation in any British political office in the UK? the leader of the islands isn't even a Falklander, the British government pick someone to go down there and govern them, and if you are British and want to go and live out there, good luck in getting a visa to settle there. It is probably harder to get a visa to live there than it would be to get a working visa to live and settle in New Zealand or Canada.
And if they came to live here, they would be no more culturally British than a New Zealander, because you call yourself British from 10000 miles away doesn't make you British. It is funny how the 'Bennies' call British people 'Poms' thats right.
Practicalities are basically whilst the Falklands remain British - the threat from Argentina will always be there (and they have the majority of worldwide support in the UN) As soon as you make the country a dominion or give it independence - the threat will cease to exist as Argentina would never dare to invade an independent sovereign nation.
One day, the British aren't going to be able to defend those islands, better start thinking of ways to safeguard its future before the 'Argies' take them off us.
And why has this turned into another Falklands war diatribe? That's right - because some of you are no better than the likeminded idiots in Buenos Aires.

The Falkland Islands will remain British as long as the residents want it to be, they are the masters of their own destiny
But you can, happened throughout history, white Rhodesians wanted to keep the status quo as did white South Africans but they were forced to change, it is not a good idea to let things get to that stage where you need to change because you have been beaten into it.
Nobody who was born 10000 miles away from the UK and has never been here is British - that is how simple it gets, to even suggest that they are requires some twisted colonial logic. Those people in any way, shape, form or logic aren't British.
If they want to remain 'British' then that is fine, but they will always be under threat from the Argentinians - and last time I looked, the Argentinians have the support of most of the UN.
