I agree with (the now retired) Joe Cortez - who refereed 885 fights! He was on the take as are so many of them. There are so many bad ones it is hard to keep up with them. The judges are, of course, even much worse. Randy Neumann was my own personal nominee as the worst ref, but I think - hope - he's retired too - now working full time at his money laundering business in NJ. There are good refs too, but I'm not good at remembering names.

Some of his stoppages are baffling. Then there was the time he helped a barely conscious Cleverly back to his corner and let him fight another round.

IJL is the worst I recall seeing for stoppages; Cole probably the worst overall of those on the list.

Best imo is Harvey Dock.

Yep. Terry O' Connor is bad too.

Who are the people that voted for Steve Smoger? Smoger is the best referee in the sport, and has been for a long time.

Smoger sure lets the guys fight. I think some people feel that he allows too much holding and does not take away points when he needs to. Smoger did have that Lou Saverese knockdown moment which was such bias on his part and so puzzling that I believe he was sanctioned for it.

Cole & Baylis stink but there's only one Ref that makes me jump off my recliner yelling at the top of my lungs and that's Jack Reiss. This guy thinks everyone has come to see him. He'll step in the middle of great action with one of his tongue lashings just to get it on TV and be the show. He loves to do this whenever the action gets hot too and totally kills these fights. He did this in the last 30 seconds of a fight recently and completely squashed the toe to toe action to end the fight. Can't remember who but i've had it with that dink.

I did mention him but they gave him a pass because he's retired but I remember how Cortez was so afraid of Don King that he refused to wave off the BHop vs Trinidad KO fight until he looked over at Don King to make sure it was ok for him to do so despite PaPa Trinidad already being in the ring and waving the towel holding his son up.

Go to the 1: 16 mark or so and watch how he looks over at Don before finally waving it off. This is one of the reasons why I say he was the worse Ref in the business.

That was crazy!! Is that the fight where the ref took like 7 points from Williams and then Williams knocked the dude out?

I will also say that Eddie Cotton's refereeing of the Tyson Lewis fight was very dubious. He kept warning Lewis for basically beating the shit out of Tyson.

Another two (un)worthy candidates are Manfred Kuechler (ludicrously DQing Cisse Salif against Petkovic and Mathis against Hammer to save the house fighters from stoppage defeats) and whoever that guy is who tried to DQ Bakhtov in the Kretschmann rematch.

Joe Cortez also robbed Melrick Taylor against JC Chavez. That was a robbery and a straight cheating.
