This is a daft one but Alex Arthur really didnt fight at world level despite being clearly good enough. When he did get somewhere near it it was far too late.

But he was, officially at least, a World champion.

I actually thought so too but he wasn't actually; only interim champion. The "full" WBO championship was only on the line when he lost to Nicky Cook.
It's a shame about Arthur; on the way up I really thought he'd be a genuine world champion. Even after the loss to Gomez, he was easily dealing with top european level fighters like Sinitsin and Burns. He looked to have lost something by the time he was struggling with Foster Jnr and Cook.
Talking about superfeatherweights; it's a shame Kevin "Real Hammer" Lear's career was cut short. He looked class again Gomez and it would have interesting to see how far he could have gone.

Arthur was awarded the title before the Cook fight as Guzman wouldn't fight him or couldn't be arsed/was too fat to make weight.

The self proclaimed Amazing-one was never the same after Gomez beat him up.
Before that, I too thought that he would have been a world level player.

Johnny Clarke is a great shout!
I'd also say the secret & Steve Roberts. Did Michael ayers fight for a world title??

Yeah, AAA and Brian Magee might not have ever won regular world titles in the ring but they definitely were awarded the status of full champion. Both also obviously fought for the world title also.
Ayers fought for the WBO title, when WBO were in its infancy.
I disagree on AAA - I think his run as EBU champion post Gomez was his best form if you look at the fighters he beat etc. His defence and concentration certainly improved post Gomez, pre Gomez whilst he looked brilliant in places his opponents weren't that great and he was "probably" an accident waiting to happen the minute he stepped it up.

Jon Thaxton worthy of a mention as EBU champion and winner of a number of Intercontinental titles. Emmanuel Burton was considered a tune up for a world title tilt.

Eric you surely can't be serious?! None of those guys come remotely close to being among the best British fighters never to fight for a world title!

I agree. I did have hopes for Audley when he first turned pro, but those were soon dashed.
Grant was a decent domestic level boxer.
Collins wasn't even domestic level - he turned pro at the reported age of 17, never boxed as a senior and built his reputation beating schoolboy amateurs.
Maybe Eric has just come in after being out all night doing his Terry Mccan routine with his old mate like the good old days?

That's a great shout. I actually just checked his record there because I didn't believe it for a minute. I was nearly sure that he would've got a World Title shot somewhere down the line in his career.

Ian Napa was a good fighter on his day, but he struggled with inconsistency. Had he been more consistent, he could've got himself a World Title shot.

UnsurprisinglyI'll pick a man from my home city - Darren Corbett.
It's debatable of course, but he probably deserved one back around 2000-01.

That's 100% how I remember it too. Arthur was rocognised as the WBO Champion back in 2007. This is just an attempt of retrospective revisionism from the WBO, and it pisses me off when the sanctioning bodies pull off stunts like this.
I just checked it on Boxrec, and they have him being the full WBO Champ when he beat Gogoladze, as can be seen here:

Im sure Arthur was WBO Interim champ and got upgraded to full champ after Joan Guzman was stripped, not 100% but i didnt think Magee had been anything other than WBA Interim champ after beating Jamie Barboza, then after Brian lost that to Kessler,Mikkel was upgraded to Regular champ

Nah, Magee was upgraded before the Kessler fight.

Interim title fights show up in the same page as full title fights, Arthur was upgraded after he beat Foster when Guzman was stripped, then lost in the first defence to Nicky Cook.
Magee was upgraded before the Kessler fight, but Andre Ward was and still is WBA Super champion, so he was never really a world champion.
