i was gonna say James 42 pounds to a l-welter is something somewhat different to 42 pounds to a cruiser......

even dysentry doesnt make you lose that much weight that quick, actually my brother had that and it does.....

I know that people lose silly amounts of body weight during training but that is the worst I've ever fornicating heard.

Yeah, that's about the worst I've heard. Mind you, apparently, Arturo Gatti outweighed Joey Gameche by 25 lbs the night they fought, which surely means Gatti must have been severely weight drained before the actual weigh in, and for two super featherweights that is a huge amount of weight!

I was also told by an esteemed colleague that injin chi lost 24 pounds to make the weight for brodie 11, though i believe this was over a measured space of time but for feathers thats some going too, though looking at the size of chi on the night comapred to brodie its well believable.

How is it possible to lose 24lbs of weight in 24 hours?

I can't get my head round that one.

You CAN lost 42 lbs in 2 weeks, it's just not very good for you. James Toney had to lost 25lbs in weight in 24 hours! Which is what happened before his big fight with Jones, toney had apparently been training like a slob, and was at any case well and truly outgrowing middleweight by that stage.
We also need to differentiate between fat weight and water weight. It's nigh-impossible to lose more than around 5 lbs. of fat a week, though the amount depends on metabolism - a huge HW who weighs twice what Hatton does and has a naturally higher calorie-burn rate could lose over a lb. a day. But fat has 3500 calories per lb. and you can't lose more than your body can burn, so a pound a day would mean burning 3500 calories more than you consume in food - and you can't simply stop eating if you want to keep muscle and be able to have the energy required to train that hard (fat metabolism is very slow and if you were running on just that you'd feel very drained and sluggish.)

So for middleweight-ish types let's say 5 lbs. of fat per week max. But on top of that in the 24 hrs before weigh-in you can lose up to 10% of your bodyweight in water - very unhealthy, not recommended, you'll need need proper rehydration (i.e. IV fluids, not just drinking water) pronto, but possible. Above 10% and you're really taking your life in your hands. So I can believe that Toney may have lost upwards of 20 lbs. in the 24 hours before the weighin for Jones (and he did this sort of thing on numerous occasions as a middleweight), i.e weighed around 185-190 the day before the weighin, and lost around 10% of that. But that's about the limit. Toney fan uptconnect on the Current Scene forum often talks about Toney supposedly having weighed 70 lbs. over the 168lb SMW limit a month before the Jones fight, but that's just not credible, as he'd have to lose 50 lbs. of fat weight in a month and then 20 lbs of water weight on top of that. No way in hell. He may have weighed at most 220 lb (which is still a hell of a lot, mind you) a month before the fight, max.

I've heard of cyclists losing 20lb of body weight on mountain stages of Le Tour. Almost all of it must be fluid...and they get a chance to replenish on the way up! Mental.

Dysentery (which can be due to any number of microbes) kills mainly through dehydration - that's why the best treatment for cholera cases is simple rehydration therapy. The body can rid itself of the microbe, but not if the person dies of dehydration first.

Actually, a p.s. to my notes about burning fat - if you're seriously ill you can roughly double your normal metabolism, since running a fever and mounting a massive immune response is energetically very expensive. So you can lose upwards of 2 lbs a day during a bad flu bout (plus water weight on top of that), since you'll typically be too ill to eat enough food to supply the energy needed by the immune system. Since immune response needs massive amounts of protein as well as energy, the body (assuming you're not able to eat steaks) will tear down muscle for its protein needs. That's why being ill isn't the best way to lose weight for a fight. ;)

i only say that cos my bro looked like a shrivelled prune when he came back from zambia, he went white water rafting and apparently theres like a whirlpool in the zambeze you can jump in and it pops you up down the river, called the "hellhole" funnily enough. My brother being a macho individual said yeah (im not quite sure what he expected the log flume at alton towers?), he says it was closest to death he ever came, ended up sucking in half the zambeze river and all the nice things in it.

Got ameobic dysentry and basically sprayed diet coke out his arse for some time.

My mum in her wisdom sent him to the tropical diseases clinic where they shoved cameras of various sizes up his arse.

how i laughed.

needless to say its not a story he likes to recount too often, but i like to remind him of at any given opportunity.

:D:D Great story.

But you're sure it was Coke and not Pepsi? Maybe that's what they needed all the cameras and diagnostic tests for - the soda companies would prefer their rival associated with projectile diarrhea, not surprisingly. ;)

Come to think of it, "hellhole" was quite appropriate in that instance. :D

Found this quote in a Toney thread on the Current scene forum - those data sound more credible to me than the 70-lbs-in-a-month stuff: they indicate that Toney lost between 25 and 30 lbs. of fat weight in the 6 weeks leading up to the Jones fight, then just under 20 lbs. of water weight (i.e. right around 10%) in the 24 hrs. leading up to the weighin:

Funnily enough, when I went white water rafting in Australia (which was pretty tame, and didn't involve months of anal explosions thankfully), they showed a video on the coach of people white water rafting on the Zambizi (zambeze?), it was fookin' mental! There were people being thrown out of the boats, boats doing somersaults, and generally it looked like the boat which takes you to hell, why on earth anyone who had seen the video would subject themselves to it is beyond me.

I was very hung over at the time, and the video instilled in me a ball-tightening fear which only left when I realised that our trip was something a lot more sedate.

Your poor old bruv J, that sounds like a real holidays from hell moment.

As soon as a World title fight is annouced the board require a fighter to check weigh, and he has to be a certain % within the weight. Then a week before the fight another check weigh, then two days before the weigh in, all checked by %.
