That thought struck me as well. Solicitor probably a limited company that will also cease trading before adding a word to their trading name with a new limited company :OhYes:
LOL. Burns' solicitor turned over more than 100 million quid last year and they've been in business since before the war, so I don't think this will sink them. If they've got any shame, though, they'll hang their heads but I won't be holding my breath.
Presumably it will depend on the exact advice given & the information they were presented with at the time though.

Really feel for Ricky, always seemed like he trusted those around him to manage and guide his career, so when told that he was able to break the contract without any legal repercussions, he went with it because he trusted those giving the advice.

Well, it looks like Hearn lead Burns up the garden path and got him into this situation. Hearn should be ashamed of himself, he's probably ruined Burns financially. As for that other tit how he gets to do what ever he wants baffles me, isn't there a ruling about fighters not getting paid..

Gutted for Burns, thats enough to ruin him surely or near enough,i know the buck stops with him but, someone who's paid to be clever should have been 1 million % certain that he was within his rights to sign with Matchroom

Ricky's career's already on the skids,he's got to show some of that famous grit to get himself back on top, shame as his mrs has not long had a kid

One thing I can't get my head round with Ricky Burns. The guy earned £160k for fighting Mitchell. We could call that about $250k. That's more than both Lee and Korabov earned on Saturday. To me Burns was getting magnificent money relative to his ability and the calibre of opponent. Why would anyone in the right mind turn their back on this ? He is/was never going to earn more than this with Matchroom.

He was fighting for a world title at home, with a poor undercard and 10,000 crowd, it's good money, but no less than he was due. 6 months on he'd only seen half of what he was owed, two fights had been cancelled, the Vazquez fight had been postponed and there were doubts about whether it had ever been signed. He was then told he could leave Frank without any legal repercussions, the chance to fight on Sky and I'm sure Eddie was offering good money too.

I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, boxers need to unionise.

He was/is due £102k from the Mitchell fight. Maybe that's one of the reasons why he moved to Matchroom.

Are you aware of the payment terms in Burns' contract ?

Was all publicised in the first court case, the money was long overdue, it was supposed to be paid in installments, but after the first two, the money stopped coming.

A world class boxer didn't ought to be waiting for his wages, the people around him ought to be proven to be honest and on his side. It is beyond ridiculous that someone who has worked for years and is at the top of his game can be fuxkwd about so much, if Ricky was given ropey advice I hope someone takes on the case and he gets paid what he is owed and it ought to be the solicitor who signed off the decision to shift camps who pays for the mistake.

Can someone explain to me how having the same person as manager and promoter is in any way not a devastating conflict of interest?

If Matchroom gave Ricky awful advice, Matchroom should be paying the bill.

Sadly they won't as Hearn, despite the nice suit is like any other promoter. All these mongs who are on 'Team Hearn' on twitter need to realise that! Business is business to everyone.

Morrison and Warren were co-managers, it is usually a conflict of interest, although it is allowed, but in some cases, ie Frampton and McGuigan, it works well.

Admitting they gave him advice would possibly give Frank license to sue them as well, so there's no chance of them doing anything other than sticking to the official line about Burns and Morrison coming to them with a letter proving he was free from his contract with Warren and they negotiated a deal, signed and announced it, all within 2-3 days of him leaving Warren.

Oh I agree, there will be no public declaration. We will be fed this 'unlikely' story as you say.

Someone has deffo shafted Ricky here. No matter who it was, Ricky is ruined.

Ricky made a big mistake leaving FW if he was a little more patient he could of potentially been a unified champ had he beat Miguel Vazquez

Expe the whole scenario is very complex but the one thing I must correct you in is that you are NOT allowed to have joint managers. That is a breach of Board rules brought in after the hearings held for Rhodes v Wazza.

You might not be allowed them, but that was the situation they were in, Morrison was taking his cut, Frank wasn't and Burns now owes him £72k in unpaid management fees.

No point being angry at the lawyers. Its inconceivable that in a case as complex as this, with lawyers as prestigious as those Burns has, that anyone ever told him he would 100% win or that he was warned what losing could cost. He threw the dice and lost. A more pertinent question is what a top level sportsman is doing being advised by a man like Alex Morrison. Fair enough if you're a journeyman looking for a fight in a leisure centre but the idea this guy is in any way qualified to advise or maximise the earning potential of a world champion is insane. Ricky should have got rid of him after the racism fiasco.

Hearn has questions to answer here as well. Burns was taking a huge risk coming to him and that risk should have been shared at least to some extent with Matchroom. To allow Burns, who is clearly not astute in representing his own interests, to bear this risk alone isnt right. Moreover, given the risks they knew he faced, the matchmaking has been utterly reckless.

Most disgraceful of all is Warren. How many times is this man going to be allowed to avoid paying fighters money they have earned by winding up companies? If the board don't act on this its an utter disgrace.

Hang on a minute Expe - it is NOT allowed. If the contract is against Board rules how can it be enforced ?
The costs were always going to be huge but to suggest the risks were not outlined to Ricky by his advisers and representatives I think is wrong.

Tbf I like ricky, have met him and spoke to him, nice guy and down to earth, but are
People still blaming FW lol, ricky has been ill advised by whoever and has U fortunately been proven to be in breach of contract, if you were unfairly dismissed at work you would protect your buisness intrests, no friends in buisness and FW done what anyone would do, let's see what matchroom
Do now, he says he sees fighters as friends etc, this has materialised through rickys head being turned, grass is not always greener on other side

Good post trojans

re suing the lawyers for bad advice, my limited knowledge and experience suggest that this is very difficult, and invariably unsuccessful

perhaps the better-informed legal minds on here might confirm or contradict my assumption?
