That such a dumb thing so allayed with brute creation could even think of beating Lewis, Tyson, Foreman, and half of the dozen other top heavies of his era is beating on empty garbage cans. We have the final results of the Lewis fight, an easy KO for Lewis. His thug manager managed to extend out his career with some gonad transplants against 3rd tier fighters, but the heroic Eddie Futch finally had to wash his hands of him in disgust. Big Dummy then realized the US Marines provided free room and board, so he slept in mornings before going back for 4ths and 5ths at mess. The Marines wanted to turn him into a real fighter though, not the Pillsbury Dough Boy, so he soon washed out of basic as expected. All he wanted to be was the trivia answer to who was the last unified US heavy champion, so it's nice of his fellow noodles to expose his comedic career tragedy yet again.

- Crawl out from under a Rock Neuman always kept his "special" project on a short leash, hence a lack of significant bouts in a bountiful heavy era. His Rocky brawl fest series against Mr. Field may have creamed the HBO suits, but he never won a title that wasn't quickly stripped from him or trashed. Ducking Lewis when that fight was the hottest and then getting beat from pillar to post before being permanantly emasculated twice by Golota, such is what he's remembered for and the primary reason for his long delay to the HOF when older members wouldn't cooperate with younger idolaters.

I believe the intimation was that Lennox Lewis would be a garbage can champion. He had to forage through the detritus to grab his world title.Ambling Alp II wrote:It's funny how people view things when it comes to a fighter not taking on another top fighter(s).
If they like the guy, he was avoided by everyone else. If they don't like him, he ducked the possible opponent(s).![]()
With Bowe and Lewis, and the whole garbage can thing, it was pretty obvious at the time that it was just a publicity stunt.
However, many people remember it as Bowe ducking Lewis.
It is too bad that we missed out Bowe-Lewis. It may have been a great fight.
It's so weird how few people know that Lewis on unifying the titles dumped the WBA belt rather than tackle his mandatory. He did the exact same thing he criticised Bowe for doing!

I think Lennox would have taken the fight for the money, but I don't think he relished the idea one bit.
Riddick at his best beats Lewis every time, and twice on Wednesday. But Lewis owns the better run since he maintained his form for a longer period of time.
They are/were both extraordinary fighters. One with a better run, one with a better peak.
Never seen Mills Lane so ineffective before

Well a lot of politicians do the same thing. When you are wrong, it's time to change the subject. As if the performance of an out of shape, 20 years later Bowe who does some goofy publicity stunt like that has some sort of context in this discussion.
If we want to go there, I guess Marciano was 49-1. And can no longer claim to be undefeated. I mean, the plane decked him for the 10 count (or longer) right?

So for you it's personal then....and really nothing to do with the point of this thread. But I will admit that is entertaining. Maybe he was as much out of dough as he was out of shape. Who knows.
You also opine that he's a "big dummy". So did he charm your sister? Or maybe steal you lunch money in school?
Most of the other contributors here actually have respect for both Lennox and Riddick.

Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
I've always thought Bowe wasn't scared of Lewis at all or anybody for that matter. I do think he mated the idea of losing to Lewis so much that it might have impacted his decision to 'move in a different direction' a couple of times when the fight should have been made.
It's a crying shame it never happened. Us fans missed out on a potential atg heavyweight trilogy. This series of fights would have cemented the 90/00's heavyweights alongside the 60/70's

Newman and Bowe had a way to weasel out as usual... They would have disputed the contract and weaseled out... If you look at your first article you posted in “Sanity Preview” 2nd column, 4th paragraph, it states as follows:
“For while Newman confidently stated that the promotion would be staged by Panix in association with his own company, Spencer Promotions, the man who prides himself on the independence of Bowe and himself from major promotional groups appears to have been wrong in stating the Lewis’s regular co-promoters Main Events, would not be involved in the show.
“There were a couple of out-and-out untruths that were said” complained Dan Duva of Main Events after the Lewis-Bowe lines had gone dead. “It was wrong that it was said that Main Events is not involved in the promotion of the Bowe and Lewis fight
“Main Events is Panix Promotions’ co-promoters by contract and I spoke to Panos Eliades before and after the press conference and both times he confirmed to me that our deal will be honored, and that Main Events and Panix will co-promote Lewis-Bowe.
“Spencer are providing the services of Riddick Bowe and that’s their only involvement in the promotion. I have the contract in front of me. The deal didn’t change because Lewis is fighting Riddick Bowe. Rock obviously said a lot of things that weren’t true in that call.”
This is why everybody hated Rock Newman.. He would say things that are flat out lies and just find ways for the cowardly Bowe to pull out of fights with dangerous opponents.. Newman was one of the most disgusting individuals in the History of Boxing. The Duvas and Frank Maloney hated doing business with Newman and Bowe because they knew they would lie their asses off and back out of any agreement.

Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
NO I wasn't wrong... Bowe never fought Lewis and never intended to fight Lewis... All they intended to do was make it LOOK like they were open to fight him... Lewis had no problem fighting Holyfield twice after being ducked for over 10 years... or fighting Tyson... Bowe didn't want to fight.
Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
Bowe also ducked McCall... Mercer... Tyson... Ruddock... Smith... Bruno... and every hard puncher in the game.
Bowe was a natural cruiserweight... He fought him because he felt he could beat him up... He was scared to death of Lewis and never fought him.

Bowe ducked Bruno? Lmao, that is an instance where the forum's policy of seeing posters you have on ignore not kicking in until you log on fantastic. You're the most useless boxing mind in forum history. Though it is sad, none of this is important. Don't eat a gun. Seriously
Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
Bowe even got the trash beaten out of him by the inept Golota... Who Tyson, Lewis, and Brewster blew away like a fart... Bowe hated big punchers, and although Golota wasn't a puncher or could box worth a damn he was big... Bruno was big and could punch.

Not that I agree with it.....but it's clearly an opinion.
and it's a dandy!
Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
And you're not a dandy BuzzBox... You're more of a doofus because you never do any research... you just spout your dull imaginings.
It's not any opinion that Bowe ducked Lewis -- and threw his Title Belt in the trash rather than face Lewis... Any other efforts to get Bowe to fight Lewis never brought the fight to fruition -- but according to Newman and Bowe, the fact that they never fought was somehow Lewis's fault.. Even though Lewis smashed Golota like a potato and Bowe got the crap knocked out of him by the same Foul Pole.
It was never Bowe's fault that he never got to fight Tyson, Mercer, McCall, Ruddock, or Lewis... Poor poor Bowe... Lewis had no trouble fighting them.

Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
Bowe was still a rising fighter in June 1991, the last time Tyson boxed, same as Lewis. That's why neither of them boxed him first time around. When Tyson resumed his career in 1995 he was fully signed up with Don King and Showtime, who were never going to let him anywhere near risky opponents like HBO's Riddick Bowe. When Tyson was fighting Buster Mathis, Bowe was fighting Evander Holyfield. When Bowe and HBO were trying to entice Lennox Lewis into a fight in 96, Tyson was fighting Frank Bruno and Bruce 'LKO1 Riddick Bowe' Seldon. The first time Tyson 'stepped up', it was of course versus Evander 'LKO8 Riddick Bowe' Holyfield. We know what happened there.Kalan wrote:It was never Bowe's fault that he never got to fight Tyson, Mercer, McCall, Ruddock, or Lewis... Poor poor Bowe... Lewis had no trouble fighting them.
Mercer had a title shot versus Riddick Bowe all lined up but blew it by losing to Fergsuon. Lewis had a mega fight lined up vs Bowe but blew it by getting KOd by McCall. McCall, you would know if you followed boxing at the time, was a low regarded heavyweight.
To state that Lewis had no trouble fighting Tyson once again demonstrates how recently you have come to the sport. The HBO/Showtime rivalry was an obstacle for years until finally 9/11 of all things brought them together.
Re: REMEMBER WHEN RIDDICK BOWE SIGNED TO FIGHT LENNOX LEWIS?
What really happened is Bowe didn't WANT to fight big hitters like Mercer, McCall, Bruno, Tyson, Ruddock, or Lewis... You get more than 1 shot to fight somebody during your entire career... Bowe never fought anyone dangerous... A light hitter like Golota put Bowe down a number of times and beat him up... Hitters like Tyson, Brewster, and Lewis blew Golota away like a fart in a wind storm.
Lewis had no qualms about fighting big punchers... Lewis faced each of the above except Bowe... He was the mandatory for Bowe, but Bowe ash-canned his belt.

I agree that this is what you think "really happened" And it's on the record that they did not fight. And to some it's just that simple. But it clearly appears that there is more to the story than your abbreviated/customized version.
