Kalan wrote: 08 May 2018, 23:54 But for 12 rounds, which is what they would fight ... Pacquiao is too fast, sharp, powerful, and would overwhelm Whitaker with volume and accuracy like DLH did... Only he'd be in his face more and ripping from a lot more angles...

I like the peak Pacquiao who obliterated Ricky Hatton in 2 rounds at 140... He was fast, busy, accurate, and potent.
Pacquiao always had problems with guys who could give him smart movement.

I noticed very early how the solid but unremarkable Agapito Sanchez had Pac frustrated and out if position.

Chavez was tabbed by many to also run over and overwhelm Whitaker.

He tried that early but began sampling some of Sweet Pea's hard body shots and suddenly lost his aggressiveness.

Pacquiao, who always seemed to be a fighter who crumbled a bit when facing adversity, would probably have the same reaction.

Whitaker was just too cagey, slick and smart.

That's the thing. Pernell is better than is resume. While he had his share of good fighters he fought, he didn't have as many available in his full prime like Manny did.

I mentioned earlier that Kalan had his "gobblededgook generator" set for stun......

Here is one, maybe two prime examples.

1. Who here thinks Whitaker was in his prime when he faced DLH?
If you honestly believe that then Kalan is being fully sensible and his point is valid.

If not......then perhaps I'm showing some sign of life.

2. Equally interesting is his apparent belief that the DLH Manny fight represents a prime vs prime affair.
Anybody buyin' that load of manure? I'd buy it, but I got no where to put it after all the other "free downloads" I've received from Kalan.

Kalan you often point to "Spring Fall" fights....and count them as somehow just as relevant as prime vs prime fights.
And it's just goofy.

So cease and desist this reprehensible behavior....or you will face even more critical review from your ol' buddy Buzz.

I don't think Whitaker was in his prime. His showing just months earlier against the so-so Hurtado indicated that he was on the decline. And I already mentioned how much trouble the limited Rivera gave Whitaker twice.

By time Pacquiao got Oscar in the ring, the Golden Boy was an aging burnt out alcoholic with a taste for white powder. Hell, 6 months earlier, little Steve Forbes battered and bruised ODLH's face.

Manny beat a shell that night.

I'm not sure that Buboy would argue against the fact that De La Hoya was a shell of his former self that night, but the guy has a right to a minority opinion, I've never heard anyone else say it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't possibly be right.

Ironically, I could easily see Manny winning a fight against Whitaker prime for prime by outworking him with sheer aggressiveness and combination punching. He'd miss most of his shots to be sure as nobody got off against Pernell, but Pea might not have enough on his punches to really discourage him and that could easily produce a tight, but controversial type decision win for Pacquiao; kind of like what happened when De La Hoya fought Whitaker.

Pernell Whitaker: “If you’re asking me whether Manny Pacquiao can beat me or not obviously I’m going to say no”

https://ontheropesboxing.com/pernell-wh ... to-say-no/

Jenna J: Pernell, you retired from professional boxing in 2001. Can you let the fans know what the reason was you retired when you did?

Pernell Whitaker: Well my shoulder jumped out of place for some reason and that was just a sign I think that came from above and said enough is enough. Like I said I had to stay out for a year after breaking my jaw against Trinidad so when I decided to come back and tune up after a year layoff and my shoulder went out then that was enough. That was it. I thought that was enough and I thought the time had come. I had no regrets on letting it go. I’m not chasing no glory or anything. I think I had done enough to solidify myself.

Jenna J: You have trained a few fighters since you retired. What was that transition like for you?

Pernell Whitaker: For me, I mean I’m not a fighter or a trainer, I’m a scientist. I know the science of boxing and I don’t have an opinion. I got facts!

Jenna J: How is it for you to be on the other side of things, being in the corner compared to being in the ring as a boxer?

Pernell Whitaker: I mean I haven’t really missed anything. It’s good to be on the other side and to see someone else go out there and present your style and add it to what it is with their own and be successful doing it. I’m not trying to do anything but help fighters to see. You know you can’t be Pernell Whitaker. There are no more Pernell Whitakers in our sport. I can only teach you the things that work for you and you only for your particular body. So you can forget me trying to teach you how to be like Pernell Whitaker because I don’t think I will be able to do that. You just got to be your own fighter and just believe and trust what I tell you.

Jenna J: What would it mean to you to train a fighter and lead him to win a championship?

Pernell Whitaker: Now that’s a good question! I’m looking forward to that because it would be my first time. I’ve been on the boxing side of being a champion, but now being on the other side and winning the world title is just like me being in there and winning the world title. We’ll win it all together. He’ll take the belt home. I’ll just take on the good money.

Jenna J: What are your thoughts on the current state of Olympic boxing and the struggles the USA has had in recent years?

Pernell Whitaker: Hey, it’s taking a lot out of boxing the way they score the amateur boxing now. I guess they do it to try and make it more competitive for other countries. I guess the United States and Cuba were more dominant than all of the other countries and winning all of the Gold Medals and they wanted to find ways for some of these other countries to win and that’s the format they came up with. Now I don’t even follow it. I couldn’t keep up with that computer system so there was no sense in me following it.

Jenna J: You had a great amateur career, what were your thoughts on that period of time for you?

Pernell Whitaker: Oh, that was my best! I think my amateur career was better than my whole professional career and everything else, because amateur boxing is all about having fun. It was just fun. You’d be with your teammates and you get to meet other people from different countries and you’re competing. It wasn’t business. It was just having fun and boxing.

Jenna J: The amateur class of 1984 was considered one of the greatest, what was it like to be around that great crop of talent?

Pernell Whitaker: All of those guys were just fun guys. They were fun to be around. They were just fun guys around other guys looking for fun. They would be eating and sleeping and laughing and joking together. You can’t make that up.

Jenna J: What do you think of the two biggest names of this boxing generation, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Junior?

Pernell Whitaker: Well I think I like Pacquiao the best out of all of them personally myself. He’s more consistent as a fighter fighting good in the ring competing. He’s the one that stands out. I don’t know about a whole lot of other fighters. If you try and bring up names to me I’d have no clue because I really haven’t been following.”

Jenna J: How do you think you would match up with a fighter like Manny Pacquiao?

Pernell Whitaker: Now you want me to go back talking and start sounding crazy? I have no clue. I haven’t watched him that much, but to me he is still a great fighter. If you’re asking me whether Pacquiao can beat me or not obviously I’m going to say no. I don’t think that they can beat Pernell Whitaker. There are no more Pernell Whitakers. Put it that way. That’s all it is.

Jenna J: How would you ultimately like to be remembered by the boxing fans?

Pernell Whitaker: I like the way remember me now, as one of the greatest fighters ever, as the best defensive fighter ever probably. I mean I would say that I’m the best defensive fighter ever. If you got somebody you know that’s better, please! I want to hear somebody tell me a name. Give me a name who could be better?

Jenna J: Any message you would like to pass along to all of your fans and supporters?

: Thank you for all of the support you’ve given me throughout my 30 years. Thank you very much!

Pacquiao

Honestly amazed Whitaker got as many votes as he did. He doesn't even have a case here honestly. Pac's resume was better before he ever moved up to Welterweight.

If you think Pernell could've beaten Pac head to head that's reasonable, but there's absolutely no justifiable way you could say he has a better resume.

I would agree. I think Whittaker beats him head to head but Pac Man clearly has the better resume.

Both had a helluva resume. Pac's one is filled with more great names. Both didn't win the biggest fights. Whitaker was robbed at least in a one such.

I'd say, Pac's resume has more great names, but Whitaker is greater, because he was objectively better in his major fights than Pac in his ones. Whitaker was clearly robbed against Chavez and arguably won the prime version of Oscar. Pac lost to Mayweather, went life-and-death against Marquez. I'd also pick Whitaker over Pac head-to-head.

Who had the bigger fights in general?

If you compare the opponents in their 'big' fights.

Do Pea's opponents beat Pacs?

Pac had more big fights.

Chavez and Oscar are quite evenly matched against the likes of Barrera and Morales.

Mayweather is better than all of them.

I'm surprised that this is such an easy call (on one side or the other) for so many people. I voted for Whitaker, but it was close in my mind.

Two points: I didn't really factor in the number of "series" in which they engaged. I simply looked at the opponents, I didn't consider how many times they fought. If one does, Pacquaio definitely had more multi-fight clashes with top flight guys.

Secondly, and this might be a bit far afield from the main question, but I couldn't help thinking about individual performance. Whitaker, in my view, dominated more top fight guys than Pac. The latter's fights were more competitive.

its easy just adding up the quality of guys they beat, dont see pea being ahead of pac at all. pac also had more victories over top flight guys as well........its not merely that he fought more, he also won all those series: 2-1 over morales, 2-0 barrera, 2-1-1 over marquez, 2-1 bradley

if you factor in ability, who wouldve won head to head (which some people think is the question), take away for loses etc....pea can edge it, but pac defo accomplished more i think despite pea being better imo

This is where it gets interesting. I remember watching Whitaker's early fights and I thought they matched him with some tough customers from the beginning. Guys like Miguel Santana and Alfredo Layne are not well regarded today and on paper, their records are terrible. But they were formidable at the time. Dominating Roger Mayweather in only his 12th fight still sticks with me.

Some of it might be generational. I feel as if the quality of Pea's opponents is being lost to history. On the other hand, I might just be falling into the old "everything was better when I was young" school.

I think it's pretty close as well.

I think people tend to forget how good some of Whitaker's opponents were. People remember Chavez and Nelson.
But McGirt, Vasquez, and Ramirez were very good. Tons of other solid fighters.

Losses have to count as well. Legitimate losses that is. Whitaker doesn't really have any when he was close to his prime. Pacquaio does.

Obviously Pacquaio had some great wins. But this is a lot closer than what some people might think.
