In my humble opinion Heavyweight should be 100kg (220lbs) plus.

But that's another discussion.

Good luck to the lad. Great to see some serious talent in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Yes I think they should review it again, maybe 210lbs (15 stone) though, the only problem is the gap between LHW and CW gets bigger.
I think Cruiserweights should just be Small Heavyweights again myself, and the weight limit for Heavyweight should begin at 176 pounds just like always.

The thought of wanting to change the most traditionally important weight class in the sports history sickens me.

It was changed in 1979 when they introduced the CW division, it was originally a 190 limit but now it's 200lbs. So what weight would a small HW be if HW starts at 175? Or do you mean scrap the CW division and go back to LHW and HW? There needs to be something in between LHW and HW as most fighters would be too small as LHWs to be fighting real HWs.

I think it’s mad that there’s 8lbs between middle and super middle yet only 7 between smw and lhw

They should increase lhw to 180 or 185

No there doesn't NEED to be something in between. If you're too small for Heavyweight, and too big for Light Heavyweight then I guess this just ain't the sport for you.

If you're a great fighter at 185 pounds you could be the Heavyweight Champion of the World. It happened multiple times throughout history. Some of those guys even beat people that outweighed them by 50 pounds or more if you can believe it, because that's what Heavyweight Boxing is.

I disagree, 175lbs is only 12 and a half stone, that’s pretty small. The average man in the UK is over 13 stone. There are plenty of fighters who were decent CWs but wouldn’t fight HWs as they were too small. To have such a huge gulf between the two wouldn’t be fair at all.

Hell I really don't mind keeping Cruiserweight, but when you want to change the limit, and start cutting into Heavyweight territory it's definitely rubbing me the wrong way.

Cruiserweight should be 190 pounds or not exist at all in my opinion.

Plenty of "Cruiserweights" have been Heavyweight Champion of the World. Roy Jones Jr. did it as recently as 2003 weighing 193 pounds.

It's funny how the talk is of weights as seven years ago, on this thread, I mentioned my brilliant plan to have only ten weights.

Flyweight under 50kg - 110 pounds

Heavyweight over 100 kg - 220 pounds

With eight other weights spread out evenly in between.

I am a very stable genius.

That’s one extreme example of a very unique and talented ATG fighting a pretty average HW. For the vast majority of fighters they couldn’t give that much size and weight away. There a weight divisions for a reason. They cut into HW territory 47 years ago when CW started. The CW limit is fine as it is but they definitely need it.

I like the idea of only 10 weight classes. As for Changing the Heavyweight limit to 220 pounds. Why don't you just go piss on the graves of Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano while you're at it.

Does anyone really pay attention to the tiny weights? Thats irrelevant, you have guys who are decent at CW but would never be decent at HW. Most CWs never fight at HW, only the very best have success.

Because you're saying what those men did could never be done again. You're saying that if Rocky Marciano were alive today wouldn't have a prayer of ever being Heavyweight Champion. You're pissing on his memory.

You're also robbing a great 200 pound fighter of his chance to be Heavyweight Champion of the World.

It's not pissing on his memory. It's not fair to compare eras, he was still HW champ. The same as Lennox Lewis was HW champ. Debating whether Marciano would be big enough today is another debate. Technically he's been a CW for a very long time but no one calls him a CW.

Indeed.

But what about the fact that Roy Jones won a Heavyweight Title in 2003? You say "Well he was an ATG and most fighters couldn't do that"

Yes, I agree with that, but what are you saying? That there's never gonna be another All Time Great fighter ever again? Roy Jones was the last person that will ever exist that could've done that?

To answer the thread question about Willie Hutchinson I think he's one of them guys that will pull some upsets in his career with his awkward style, but I don't look for him to be a dominant Champion or anything in the sport. He kinda fights like Tyson Fury if you took 100 pounds and 6 or 7 inches off of him, and I think the 100 pounds and extra inches is a big part of the reason why Tyson Fury gets away with the style he's had.

As we know boxing isn't black and white. Lots of variables why some opponents are picked, the timing of when they picked, how good they are etc. Plus don't forget RJJ is often suspected of having extra "help". One result like this doesn't equate to scrapping the CW division.

How many people thought SRL would beat Hagler or Canelo would beat Kovalev. Fighters can have success out of their natural weight class. I'm sure Chris Billam-Smith could get a few wins at HW against the right opponents but does that then mean he's good enough to mix with the best? He's certainly weighed over 200lbs in some fights as did Johnny Nelson but there's a reason why they mainly stayed at CW along with guys like Carlos DeLeon, Qawi etc.. Nelson and CBS are bigger than many of the HWs from decades ago too.

I'm fine with keeping the Cruiserweight division. Making the Heavyweight limit 220 pounds I have a big problem with.

I personally would rid Boxing of all the Jr. divisions keeping only Cruiserweight and Strawweight of the additional weight classes as I think those are the only ones needed.

I'd also split the difference between the old Cruiserweight limit and the new one, and make it 195 pounds if it were up to me, but of course it's not. Ultimately the Cruiserweight division is just kinda a footnote so it doesn't much matter what the weight limit is as long as it's no more than 200.

I agree with your general point but specifically with regards to Canelo Kovalev, a fight which has always annoyed me …… Kova lost because, as an older fighter who hadn’t lived the life, Canelo’s people ensured he had very little time to rest and prepare for their fight after he had gone through a tough battle with Yarde

Kovalev's fight with Canelo was about 2 and a half months after his fight with Yarde. That's plenty of time.

Will not happen Whittaker is getting nursed all day long ,, which i really find hard to understand , why a promoter would do that , I fail to see how spending top dollar to get wins for a fighter is beneficial , , You got the goods ,you got the goods simple has that , OK it may well end up in a big money fight for a pissweak title they lose next time round , but its the money , time and effort you have to spend , nursing , nuturing and paying for wins , for someone who just is'nt quite there , Ruins boxing for me .

I really do think this its good management bollocks has gone too far . I even look at Moses now , and cannot see any reason he can't be in with ANYONE , yet we all know his next opponent will be someone slow and made for him , Franklin while some say was a good test , was it really , if you have a guy who's slow ,

OK crafty experienced but slow has a wet week regardless, well who's going to be a hard fight for him , its always going to be a big puncher with good footwork and speed , so was Franklin the great test most thought he was going to be , .

But i do think Moses is gonna be fed more fodder for quite a while yet . me i say liven the heavyweight scene up , lets have DD - Moses , Kavabel -- Moses -- , DD --- Wardley ,,, the great fights are there just make them , stop rehashing your Wilders - Furys - Chisora
