On the 17th July, 2017, the betting odds (quoted by Sky BET) for the top-two boxers favoured as being outright winner of the 168lbs version of the WBSS tournament was as follows:

1. Callum Smith = 42.11% (11/8)
2. George Groves = 28.57% (5/2)

Today, the current betting odds (quoted by William Hill) for the eventual winner of the WBSS final, scheduled to take place on the 2nd June, 2018, stands at:

1. George Groves = 57.9% (8/11)
2. Callum Smith = 47.6% (11/10)

It’s interesting how the opinions of the mainstream masses have shifted fairly significantly over a relatively short seven months timeframe.

well i can see it because groves picked up by far the biggest win of the tournament so far and callum was a bit lackluster in his, scoring decisions vs lower comp when hed been known for knockout power. so more momentum with groves perhaps.

but i still feel callum will win. always felt he fights a bit to the moment. but its a really good fight and i can see it going either way.

I agree with your opinion. :TU:

To be fair to Callum Smith though, he had to tolerate a sudden change of opponent at only five days’ notice and faced a late replacement who he knew very little about.

The Brit would have almost certainly had a game-plan for Jürgen Brähmer, but was obviously thrown off by facing Nieky Holzken instead.

It didn’t really surprise me to see Smith adopt a cautious approach, working mainly behind the jab, in what turned out to be a glorified sparring session, in order to play it safe and avoid injury or defeat. Many boxers would have almost certainly adopted the very same mind-set if they were wearing his shoes.

I think that ESPN's Dan Rafael claims that the finalists of the WBSS could earn as much as $8m, with the eventual winner receiving approx. $10m, as well as taking home the Muhammad Ali trophy, coupled with receiving guaranteed opportunities to participate in highly lucrative marquee bouts in the future. So he had an awful lot on the line against the unknown Holzken.

Callum Smith did not extend himself during last weekend's bout, but he still cruised his way towards victory, even if it wasn’t a particularly impressive or a crowd-pleasing performance. He's played it smart by choosing to take the safest route to the WBSS final and never took any unnecessary risks in his bouts against Skoglund and Holzken.

Braehmer Aims To 'Legally' Force WBSS Fight With Callum Smith

Things have gotten a little more interesting because Juergen Braehmer is planning a legal challenge in the hope of facing Callum Smith in the super middleweight final of the World Boxing Super Sseries (WBSS) final.

"I'm assuming I'm going to box and I've already got my lawyer on the case," Braehmer told German newspaper the Maerkische Oder Zeitung.

"I will prepare intensively for a fight against Smith."

Reports in the UK media suggest the fight will be rescheduled for July 7 or 14 - which WBSS officials have disputed, but Braehmer hopes a legal challenge could see him face Smith.

I don't agree that legally Brähmer should fight in the final vs. Smith. Groves has earned that opportunity..

I think it was genuine and very unfortunate that Brähmer had to pull out with a virùš.. i was looking forward to Brähmer vs. Smith.. and I hope it happens in the future.

I'm not sorry that Holkzen fought Smith instead because I enjoyed the fight.

Could come down to conditioning.
Smith throws accurate punches and sticks to the cycles and can become hard to beat.
Emotion and the odd one getting through and you can see Groves making a fight of it.
It's close I'd like to take a look at both of them leading up to the bout and then the weigh ins.
The jab is one of the keys to the fight, can Smith land his and will Groves avoid it could be the game changer.

I wonder how well Groves will be feeling after the injury in this fight. Originally I thought Groves will pull this out, but now I'm leaning 50/50 with Smith having a good shot to pull this off. He's probably been training non-stop for this fight since March.
