I expected GGG to press and work the body more but Canelo's movement was really good as was his counter punching. Best I've seen him although I had him losing!

Only watched once but at the time I recall being disgusted that it wasn't a clear ggg win.

i had it slightly for ggg, canelo was cleaner but took too much time off. there were enough rounds where ggg was outworking and imo landing more because of that, for ggg to win the fight, dont think draw was that bad though, i can see it if you lean canelo for the hard to score rounds. canelo did well to rally late, i thought from around 7-9 it looked like he was really tiring and that ggg was gonna run away with it, but canelo ended the stronger one and won the last 3 on all the cards i think to salvage the draw

but i felt overall canelo showed a higher cieling of ability. i think he has more space to improve in the rematch. canelo will win clear this time

Because he saved so much energy from having a low workrate?

I had it a draw the first time I watched it but after all the fuss about the cards I rewatched (which I don't often do) and had Canelo winning 114-113 :maybe:

I prefer GGG to Alvarez but just thought that Canelo seemed to neutralise him, a very close fight in my opinion and couldn't argue with a close decision either way but thats just the way I saw it.

i thought it was a good win Golovkin, not easy ,as i thought canelo boxed very well in spats but look a little scared , i think it showed how good golovkin is and can be , i enjoyed the fight ruined by the decision , i think it would it would be so much better billed as canelo pay back, i would of paid for that , i feel cheated by that draw result ,

how did you score it 114-113 when there were no foul deductions or knockdowns, surely you didnt think either had a round big enough to be 10-8 without those

116-113 Canelo.

7-4-1.

Cleaner punches. More big shots.

Not impressed by who's on their front foot or who's on their back foot.

Don't care who throws more punches.

I just judge fights strictly on effective, clean punches, which apparently is a foreign concept to many.

I get your point but I DO count the things you discount. I count loads of aspects when scoring. Probably too much

But I agree that Canelo's work was under-rated by many who just saw GGG coming forward & thinking that's the be all & end all.

what was your rbr scoring?

a guy can land cleaner shots overall but how does that break down per round?

and what counts as a clean connect vs a not clean connect, and how do you balance quantity vs quality connects , and effective vs not effective connects in a fight where neither guy hurts the other? like, is 1 clean shot equivalent to 2 unclean ones? what if the stats are 20 unclean to 5 clean? simply having clean punching as the only criteria is way too simplistic

canelo landed the best shots overall, but breaking it down round by round there was a lot of time with him not doing anything offensively, and ggg throwing and not landing great but still landing more by virtue of activity and simply grinding at it. i dont think canelo won a clear round from 4-9 so cant buy that he defo deserved it as i think youve suggested b4

how many ppl think ggg won simply because he came forward?

that just seems like something ppl would say if they had it more favourably to alvarez then most and wanted something to discredit the other ppl

be like the ggg ppl saying 'oh, the ppl who had it for canelo just think jerking your head around with your back on the ropes all fight means your putting on a boxing lesson and that cherry picked highlight vids prove it'

just like its not all about moving forward its not all about looking cuter

Yeah, the problem for me was it wasn’t the most constructive of movement. It was enough to set up the odd flashy shot here and there, and to avoid contact, and to try and save stamina. Enough to make much of the fight close. Given the fight took two years to deliver, I was very disappointed in Canelo’s approach. For a young fighter his activity levels are extremely poor.

He fought the way he did because GGG made him. He fought well but GGG dictated the pace of the whole fight. He wasn't just coming forward like some folk say. It was educated pressure. It was just a very high quality technical fight. I really enjoyed it. Round 5 is one of the best rounds you're likely to see in terms of technical ability.

It was good, no doubt, as was another controversial and inconclusive middleweight fight, Taylor vs Winky. As in that fight, one guy came forward, somewhat predictable with a greater work rate. And the other threw more flashy shots, from the back foot, yet seemed reluctant to put the work in. In both of these fights, none of the fighters lifted it, raised their game, tried to take it to another level. The aggressors did the same thing all night, and the more aesthetic punchers waited too long. And we got two official stalemates that fell short of classic status yet provided some quality and encouraged plenty of debate.

7-5 GGG.

I thought I was being generous to Canelo.

I watched it again and thought that 8-4 or 7-5 to GGG was fair. Would be a stretch to give Canelo 6 rounds, a big reach to give him 7 and incompetence or corruption to give any more than that.

last time i watched it i had it a draw. do you go for clean punches landed or aggression / ring generalship. it was very close, you could score it any which way. golovkin seemed the boss somewhat, but was outboxed at times.

Good call jamamb, I just checked my post from last September (yes I should get out more I know!) and I actually scored it 115-114 Canelo on my 2nd view according to the post-fight thread. I only rewatched it because having thought it was a draw originally put me in a very small minority on here so I expected to favour GGG the 2nd time thinking I'd missed something but I actually edged towards Alvares even more :maybe:
