Schwer fought for the WBU world title and won the IBO world title.
There were plenty of world titles back then as well.

If anyone thinks Mitchell was 100% going into either they are in crack. 100% Mitchell was Murray and Linares. Maybe you feel they were better than him anyway, but not going to judge the scale of the defeat as an accurate judge of natural talent.

They both destroyed him so easily that I see no reason to assume that he could beat either of them if he turned up slightly better another night.
They both had much more successful careers than Mitchell and he doesn't deserve to be spoken about so highly.

I don't think any version of Mitchell would've beaten Burns that night tbh mate. That was Burns at his best and probably his career best performance.

schwer didnt box like 50 years ago. he was active into the 2000s and was pretty 'modern' himself. there were loads of titles around in his day too.

Billy Schwer was proned to cuts. He was a good British level boxer in a era where there was a good bunch of talent. Schwer fell short of world titles purely because he wasnt good enough to beat the worlds best back in the mid to late 90's.
Ricky Burns has a better resume purely on the basis of winning a world title. Is he a better boxer than Schwer? Possibly, but we are in a different era. If Schwer was around today im sure he would have won a world title of some description.
Ricky Burns is world class, and Schwer at best was only euro class.

wbo/wbc/ibf/wba/ibo/wbu/etc were all around in schwers day. the wba didnt have so many titles, but burns won two titles outside the wba anyway. there were plenty of belts around for schwer to win but he didnt do it. titles themselves dont make a fighter great but schwer was hardly from the old eras of 1 title so i dont really buy that excuse on that front
and he didnt only lose to the likes of stevie johnson either, and btw burns gave crawford a better fight then schwer gave johnson. to date burns arguably gave crawford his second best fight, won some rounds, stood up to the shots for 12, and actually gave crawford some stuff to think about.

OK, when I say 'world', even today I don't think people see the WBU or IBO as real titles, and they didn't then....even bogus WBA belts have more 'credibility'.
Look at it this way....Schwer never had a title shot against a guy like Di Rocco, and Ruelas and Johnston were far better than Martinez.
Not calling Burns a bum or anything, but Schwer definitely beats at least one of Di Rocco or Martinez.

Probably not very much between them in terms of ability. Billy was matched harder in low profile fights. Facing a lot of really hard cases like David Tetteh, who were excellent fighters but never got any decent opportunities at all.
