You make a good point, but boxers (mainly high profile top 10 guys) do have a say, when it is convenient for them to have one, otherwise blame it on the promoter. Many examples of that over the years.

Quite clearly with Charlo there is a business roadblock to him not fighting better opposition, since he's not with DAZN and they have like all the other top MWs. Julian Williams is arguably the top guy at 154 now and he already pounded him. The WBC also took Mall's Canelo mandatory away with the franchise nonsense and you can't blame Charlo for that. A fight vs Eubank seems like it might be getting lined up and that would be solid.

Don't really understand what happened with Tank, since he always looks great and pounded better and bigger opposition than they started matching him with. Gamboa is a bit of a step back up I guess.

Fielding was a cherry picking to capture the SMW paper strap. Now it's not much relevant, cause he won Smith for the real belt.

Obviously it's not possible to call cherry picking anything of the remaining, but the Kovalev bout has some vibes of it. Kovalev was the biggest name, but already not the most threatening guy at that weight, while he was suggested only a short notice for big money to fight Canelo, after the hard Yarde bout. So, Canelo went the easiest way to capture a LHW strap.

Boxers are known as “PRIZE fighters” for a reason.

From a sporting perspective, the vast majority of them really couldn’t care less whom they fight.

That said, they have to make business decisions in the interest of themselves, their families, their team and any financial stakeholders.

So they consider the “risk versus reward” ratio, which means they aren’t going to risk devaluing their own financial self-worth by engaging in a low-paid bout that is very likely to result in them suffering defeat.

This isn’t just the thought process of boxers though, because their team (i.e. trainer, manager, promoter, broadcaster etc.) will inevitably be like-minded.

Ultimately though, most fighters are only able to decline bouts. Nearly all of them are unable to hand-pick their opponents.

However, if you insist on using the term “cherry-pickers” to describe certain fighters, then this should only apply to those that are self-managed and self-promoted.

And there aren’t that many of those, are they?

Yeh, you can't call it a chery pick, if you're fighting elite boxers, or boxers in or near their primes..

Fair enough, Rocky Fielding.. Canelo wanted to fight twice that year due to his clen suspension, couldn't fight in May, so fought in September and December.

You can call Avni a cherry pick, BUT, Canelo is just keeping his belt and also still plans to fight two more times this year.

By the end of his career, Canelo will have probably fought more boxers in their prime than FMJ.

True that. Great fighter, but he definitely could have fought more fighters. Same with Larry, but probably on a different level.
