Haven't seen full fight, but when I see cards like that it makes me wonder if the away fighter just got 10-10s when he shoulda got the round. I am an advocate for 10-10s but still have almost never scored more than 2 in a fight, and usually it's just 1

I notice in area title fights these scores seem more common, stuff like 98-96

You think wrong - obviously too young.

Until late-90's British boxing used a half point system where regular won round was scored 10-9½ and only extremely rarely 10-9 was awarded (knockdown wasn't enough for a full point round, not even 2 knockdowns necessarily).

So 99-97 was indeed 6-2-2 in rounds.

F ex Alan Rudkin's victory over Manny Elias (49 ¾ - 47 ¾) means 9 rounds to 1 with individual rounds scored 5-4 ¾

I heard a lot as a kid about Collins and he was meant to be great but how can you get that many fights Unbeaten and only be a school boy. I had a very good record as a Jr and didn't lose till I was 16 in my 4th year school boy finals, I didn't box on club shows couldn't get Matched, was there a lot more Boxer in the 80's then the 90's?

Does anyone know what he did win as an Amateur?

Funnily enough in my old boxing gym we had the Neath team doing a pre season with boxing training. Stuart Evans was there amongst others. I was amazed for such a big guy that his punch power was nothing, didn't want to spar either.
I'd be very surprised if he knocked anyone out. A bear hug would be something different.

I had high hope's for Stretch and he didn't do bad at all at light middleweight. Central Area and British champion.

Beat a tough champion in Cooper and iced Derek Wormold in 1 round in his first and only defence.

Took the opportunity to face Eubank and did his best before getting nailed and taken out.

A tall, sharp and rangy southpaw I enjoyed watching him and found his fights entertaining. The glamour boy image belied the fact he was very tough. The Sena win was a nightmare fight for Stretch but he stuck with it to the end against a very dirty opponent.

For someone who used to rub up some people the wrong way and glitzy image I don't remember boxers queuing up to fight Stretch. Nowadays there'd be a queue a mile long and social media slanging matches. I think he was a bit avoided to be honest.

You were class Martin I was on a NABC course with you at Newcastle under Lyme , you were around 14 I'd say I was an assistant trainer about 22 I wasn't really a trainer I was boxing myself and my trainer didn't want to go so sent me it was good experience being around top young fighters and trainers .

I remember George Collins very well. He boxed out of Pinewood Starr, great junior club, always produced schoolboy champions. Les Stevens ran it in those days, very nice man and knew his stuff. All the Stevens family were good people. Always treated me well when I visited. in the 80's and early 90's is was pretty common to box 3 or 4 times a night in the Divs/ABA's, etc so a boxer could pretty much build a record up quickly, especially in the popular weight classes.

If I remember - he was laid out like a starfish.

Saying that - George and his brother Tony were good fighters - they would have been British champions today.

Stretchy (as they call him in St Helens...) was a tough guy and a good fighter - he fought the Argentinian - he has been mentioned on here but they gave him all he could handle until he came through and stopped them - he fought more than one Argentinian hardcase - as a man - he was a bit of a prat but he was a genuine fighter.

His fight with Gary Cooper for the British light middleweight title was a cracker - he broke Coopers nose in the first round - but Cooper was a Hampshire traveller so he was hard as nails and kept going in and giving Stretch hell - what a good fight that was.

Actually, Stretch and the Collins brothers all fought under Fwanks banner - the best of them though was a Kilburn welterweight called Tommy Shiels who could punch a hole through a wall - stopped future British welterweight champion Del Bryan in two rounds and he proper stopped him as well.

He beat some good fighters. If my memory serves I don't think he was in the best of health.

I read that Shiels hit someone in a street fight and he never regained consciousness, he then quit boxing and turned to christianity. Not sure how true that is though?

Michael was a talented guy, didn't live as well as he good, his brother Peter was British champ and his nephew of course is doing great
