100% agree Mickey, just made that point because we both know that the Eubank fan boy/obsessive will come back with the claim that Eubank was past his best then, so just wanted to make it clear that even a peak Eubank couldn't have dealt with JC (who let's not forget was very green and untested when he stepped up to face Eubank).

Gotta feel for Dean's dad, Trevor, to lose his son at the age of 44. Trevor was a fine technician who went one better than Dean by winning an ABA title but Dean went better than his dad by winning British titles at two weights. Trevor, who went in with everyone as a pro, challenged Pat Thomas for the British welterweight title in 1976 but was narrowly outscored over 15 rounds. Sadly, it was a snoozfest.

He was clearly world-class, and would’ve beat them all. And Calzaghe was no US ‘hall of famer’ back then because the US didn’t know him.

Although Reid came close to beating Calzaghe, the only other British or Irish boxer I would give a chance of beating Calzaghe would be Froch.

The late Dean Francis was a terrific boxer. He had every punch in the book, but he liked to work at his own pace and Calzaghe would never have let that happen and terrorised him with blistering two fisted raids.

Joe (and Enzo) would have known he would have needed to be on his game for Francis, and that's a huge compliment to Dean. The amateur win counts too because Joe really dumped Francis hard. Yes, Francis improved of course, but Calzaghe even more so.

I was taken in by Lacy and thought he'd beat Calzaghe, but Joe was simply breath taking that night and skinned him alive

A young Joe knew he had to be on his game with Eubank, and won easily.

Francis shouldn’t even be brought up! Ronnie Davis himself says Andy Flute is the hardest sparring partner Eubank ever had, and Andy was clubbing every night.

I liked Francis but he was struggling for stamina in more than a few fights and got stopped by Jaffa wotsit. It wasn’t some fluke loss either. He tired late in fights and tended to get hurt and marked up.

I’m struggling to see any sort of scenario where Francis beats Calzaghe, even at his “peak”.

Yeah if you go head to head with mutual opponents he can look “better” ie starie but that’s a really flawed way of looking at it.
