He wasn't, though. Even with extensive amateur coverage on The BBC he was pretty low key for years. Right up to Valuev, really.

I think that was the first time Haye’s purse was largely based on PPV buys hence him and Adam Booth really pushing it.

Up to Mormeck Haye really struggled to sell which is amazing considering he was on the Beeb early followed by Sky. It wouldn’t have helped having Maloney box him in some random places like Rotherham etc.

He seemed to cross over a little bit for the Enzo fight which sold well from memory.

There can be a difference between being a ticket seller and having a high profile (you can have one without the other).

I always saw Haye as a ‘TV fighter’.

These guys can also attract big numbers to an event (often as they get to the bigger fights) but they aren’t running around shifting the tickets themselves.

He was getting column inches then, unlike all the ticket sellers up and down the country.

Ricky Hatton turned himself into one with a mix of his style, personality and tv backing. If you watched Ricky early on, you definitely wanted to see him again. Sky cottoned on early then the fans. He played the football thing perfectly and believe it or not his down to earth routine was funny and original, once upon a time. He only had a bus or two of fans for the early shows and was a long way behind Farnell and Gomez in ticket sales.

It was made quite clear to them that if they didn’t make a huge noise they would be jailed on their return to camp.

They were an hilarious bunch I remember them cheering just as much for the “away” fighter.

The 400+ squaddies I got to the Hatton/Maussa fight were fantasticl.

And that is exactly why we go to local shows. The atmosphere is always better when a local lad is on. Standard. Don’t matter. As long as it’s fair.

I think he has had an undeserved rough time. He built up Tyson & Carl Froch … and just when he could make some decent money on the back of their success they left.

Therein was his downfall.

He’s not really a ticket seller! That number is misleading, he was the first of Henry’s Gym to turn pro so had the whole ‘gym family’ behind him.

I remember mick telling me about the Roman Karmazin fight.

It was considered by the whole team as an opportunity not to be missed but it was acknowledged a tough assignment.

I remember Robert McCracken threw the towel
and did not let him take too much of a beating.
