I disagree, but hey. Press conference are a load of old bollix, as are press releases.

You can see with your own eyes what a fighters' attributes are, it depends on what you consider boxing writing to be about. Some of the best boxing writing is about the psychology of fighting and fighters. I've intereviewed quite a few fighters over the years, and in many cases they don't reveal a great deal.

Most fighters sadly were poor interviews, their not geared up to wax lyrical about themselves or their career.

Once interviewed kostya tszyu just before he fought hatton which was pretty cool, dont even hace the article or audio transcript.

I often found i got good results from written intervews steangely, as it gave people time to think about responses. My favourite was Jay Larkin, the head of boxing at HBO.

I was very fortunate to earn a good living from boxing for quite a long time. That was a good few years ago now. The reason I made money was for the exact same reason I mentioned,getting out and about. I agree,there is even less money now unless you are elite,IE Fury,Joshua. I love the sport,best sport in the world imo. But I have to say it has been devalued(boxing journalism) in part by so many so called You tube channels/experts. Soon as that lot started I felt legit journos is were devalued. Admittedly,they are improving standard wise now but in the early days some of them were awful. But the main reason is,unless you toe the line with promoters,pr,even boxers, you can forget it as a serious writer imo.

I wish I could remember who it was, but there was an old school journalist who told me he never read press releases and never went to press junkets, or to anything organised by the promoters - he said that if you started trotting out their bullshit, you'd never write about anything of consequence.

There simple isn't enough public interest for there to be any real money in it any more.
