There was a time, though, when people were backing Jones to beat Lewis. It was post-Ruiz and pre-Tarver, when Jones was being hailed by some as a GOAT contender, and post-Klitschko, when Lewis looked very ragged.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I've never seen a thread where virtually everyone agrees.

NOW we know Lewis would have annihilated Jones, but at that time above, it was seen as a live fight.

I think its a period in his life that Claude Abrams would rather forget..oliverfennell wrote: There was a time, though, when people were backing Jones to beat Lewis. Interesting earlier post about Jones v Ruiz. I was at that fight and have always thought Ruiz needed a more lenient ref to do some decent inside work - in particular the short left upper cut, in the clinches, to RJJs body. Not sure he would have won (in fact I don't think he would have done) but anyone who says that was masterful by Jones was blinkered

I think befor the fight Francois Botha was a resonable opponent, having come as he did from a draw against Briggs but the result makes us think differently.stujones wrote:No, but maybe would have been a better match than some of Lewis' opponents (I don't want to sound critical - cause his resume is excellent) - what I mean is I give Jones more of a chance than say Frans Botha or Zelko Mavrovic.
I think that Lewis could have disposed of RJJ quicker.

so who would have faired better, you've had a number of light heavys make a certain success of jumping to heavy. Michael spinks beat Larry holmes twice, and also a lumbering Conney, but i guess everyone would look at the Tyson fight for an answer. Moorer beat holyfield and had some great tearups , but again his chin would fail him, same with Bob Foster. That would lead us to Archie Moore , he beat some decent heavys , had a good chin and could punch. Out of them all he'd stand the best chance. But he still wouldn't win , IMO .

The only light heavy with an earthly's against Lewis would have been Sam Langford, and even that is a long shot. Langford was superhuman, the greatest p4p ever imo. He had the power of a top heavyweight and the speed of a welterweight, he had a punchers chance with Lewis who could be knocked out.
Moore always fell short at the very highest level at HW, and wouldnt last too long with Lewis.
I always thought a Lewis-Jones fight would be a total mismatch.........Jones was a blown up MW, albeit a terrifically skilled one.

Sam Langford would have been absolutely destroyed by Lewis. Langford fought in a time when boxing was still developing and EVERY boxers skills were primitive compared to todays guy's. Jones himself would wipe the floor with Langford as would a whole host of others fighters. No fighter of that era would cut it in modern day boxing, not with the skills they had then. I can't believe you even said that.dr_devious wrote:The only light heavy with an earthly's against Lewis would have been Sam Langford, and even that is a long shot. Moore would have had no chance either. The man was a great technician, but didn't have the athletic ability to compensate for the size disadvantage when he went up to heavyweight. That's why he always got beat when he stepped up.

I'll take that as a YESGreg Nicholas wrote:Jones jr didnt actually look v.good in the Ruiz fight, he'd need to be as fast and quick as he was in his prime at the lower weights but with even more strength (or much more strength) than he had in the Ruiz fight.. and Lewis would need to be even worse than he was against Klit..
