I am sure I have more then a few high light clips of Robinson at welter on a dvd somewhere. Not complete fights but certainly brief highlights.

Will have to dig it out and have a look. Surely the serious collectors (Collins2000, Red Dragon etc) should know whats available out there and whats not?..

As for Nelson being a slugger that is way off, he was a really skillful box-fighter who could get up on his toes and jab with the best of them when he needed/wanted to

I’m certain I have seen grainy short clips of SRR at WW in the past.

It may well be off the mark comparing Nelson to SRR in a fight where Nelson’s undoubted skills came into play (haven’t seen that particular fight) – but what great a fighter he was.

Just think he was only a relative 13/14 bout novice going into the Sanchez fight and gave that legend all he could handle for over half of the 15 rounder. He ran out of steam and into a master of composure, under presssure, with exceptional all round boxing skills at elite level.

Nelson had an ability, instinctive or otherwise, to outbox at times, outfight at times, walk good fighters down at times whilst mixing all these up and with great strength and power.

I remember saying on the BOTP forum that Nelson boxed beautifully for the first 4 rounds against Fenech (which he could always do), in their first meeting, but inexplicably went to the ropes – never understood why he did that. But I feel that the depth of this great fighter showed through in the rematch.

Also at a weight that Sweet Pea was more comfortable with, and closer to Sweet Pea's prime. I know Nelson would go on to be a champion a further 6 years after - but I think signs of him slipping were evident in the McDonnell fight.

Thats is why I possibly underate Sanchez compared to most historians. Sanchez was at his peak and I am convinced that with a bit more experience and belief Nelson would have beaten him every time after.

Nelson was just a natural born fighter, like a Duran, who even with a handful of fights could beat just about anyone you put in front of him.

What a shock it must have been for the great Salvador Sanchez to have an unknown novice suddenly turn into the second coming of Henry Armstrong.

Sanchez was as good as it gets though, who else could have floored and stopped the near unstoppable Mighty Warrior?? 8)

In the first fight with Fenech, Nelson was still recovering from the effects of malaria which affected his performance. He certainly faded in that fight, but boy did he do a job on Fenech in the rematch and Jeff was never the same after that.

Nelson was a class act for sure. His knockout of Pat Cowdell is still vivid in my mind after all these years. He was too old, too slow and out of his weight class against Whitaker, who was at his best. But at featherweight, apart from against Sanchez, I think Nelson was close to unbeatable. A true great.

He, along with Marvin Hagler, is one of the few fighters I can honestly say hardly ever seemed to be hurt. Durable with a capital 'D'.

As I understood it at the time, Nelson's wife had died not long before the fight with Whittaker. He was subdued in the bout no doubt, but it may not have been 100% down to Sweet Pea's unique skills..

TBH Nelson was before my time but I've seen a few of his fights and i don't think his punching is too compact/straight or his footwork particularly intricate. What he does he does incredibly well, but their are flaws that seperate him from the Robinsons, Whitakers, Mayweather types.

In terms of natual born fighter, yes, in terms of skill Duran is a complete other level.

By welterweight footage I meant complete fights, real fights.

As already said, Nelson was probably past his best, beyond his ideal weight and up against a defensive master with exceptional reflexes and speed on the counter who would win titles up to LMW.

I think I had a discussion with you on here about this before. Some fighters no matter how great they are will only ever be a one weight (taking the original categories into account) fighter because of their physical size/fighting style. Nelson was one of those fighters.
