I give Ali the benefit of the doubt.
He got brainwashed by a certain group and naively probably believed a lot of what he was saying was for marketing reasons.
One thing's for sure, Joe will never forgive or forget.
That's despite the advice from his brother.
I thought the moment when his mobile phone answer message was played said it all, so many years on from the insults.
Ali should have manned up and apologized to Joe's face. Given the terrible treatment he gave Joe.

I don't buy into the notion that Ali did what he did just to promote the fight - he was an arrogant tool who believed he was a better man than Joe. Ali called Joe dumb, but he was played like a cheap fiddle by the bigots at the nation of Islam.
100% Agreed, it was funny how Ali called Frazier a tool and ignorant yet it was Ali himself who was oblivious to the fact that he was being used by Elijah Muhammed and the Nation. Also agree with you about Pacheco - what an arrogant prick. Still great documentary. It was obviously very biased towards Joe but the cameras don't lie. The only thing I could think of that I disagreed with in the film was when they said Joe dominated the first fight; its been I while since I saw it but I thought it was pretty close until the last few rounds when Frazier pulled away and the knockdown sealed it.

I was less surprised that Pacheco came across as a sanctimonious tit. He's been perfecting that over the years.
The way he talked to the reporter was ridiculous all this 'strike that' 'why are you asking dumb questions' The guy was making a documentary about the fight, and his questions were legitimate.

Pachecho thinks he's the ultimate authority on boxing just because he was Ali's ringside physician. Big frigging deal mate, you were neither a trainer, a sports writer, a participant, or a conditioner, you were just someone who was lucky to ride on Ali's coat tails and make a name for yourself, which you've traded off for the rest of your lift.

The ultimate ignorance he showed, was where he said he thought Ali's taunting of Frazier with the use of the word 'Gorilla' was hilarious.

Amazing also how he called Frazier dumb, for fighting on thought blind in one eye, and then both against Ali, and yet failed to call Ali dumb for fighting on when according to Pachecho himself, he wasn't capable of passing a proper medical.

A hypocrite and a blow-hard of the highest order.

It is unfair that Joe Frazier doesn’t get the respect he deserves these days.

Having said that, Joe Frazier would have a more enjoyable life after boxing if he had put this grudge behind him 30 years ago.
He is obviously a sensitive soul and bitter about Ali’s antics but to keep the pot boiling for all these years - he doesn’t do himself any favours.

Ali was a genius for a soundbite, and IMHO the Manila antics were just part of the usual fight promotion and theatricals that surrounded Ali from day one. He had tried the ‘big ugly bear’ thing with Sonny Liston years before, and just embellished it here.
Yes, he overstepped the mark, but Frazier should have put it behind him.

And Ali wasn’t the only fighter to touch this issue. Nearly twenty years after this, Lennox Lewis called Frank Bruno an Uncle Tom before their clash in Cardiff in 1993.

What is it with the US 'faces' - they often seem to be arrogant know it alls - i cringed seeing all those guys - Pacheco, Hauser et al lording it up like they are the greatest autorities on boxing.

THat dimwit Bert Sugar is the same. Atlas as well....I can't stand that prick

You should read his book 'Blood in my Coffee', it is strewn with errors and he comes across badly.

Watching the doc made me realise how gullible I was as a young kid, defending Ali in every sense, incapable of seeing how flawed he was, idolising the guy really. I think he knew deep-down that Joe had more right to feel marginalised as a black man than Ali. Ali's father had a trade but Joe came from poorer stock. The final irony lies in Joe living in the black area of town, whereas Ali has moved out of the cities.

It spills over into boxing styles as well. Ali accused Joe of having a style that was not high art of science, yet after the doc I dug-out Frazier-Quarry/Bonavena/Foster and was once again amazed by just how brutal and efficient Joe's style was. No clinging on like Ali used to. Post-exile Ali could very boring to watch, if science amounts to holding and taunting then fair enough, Joe was the most destructively precise fighter in the world for a while, and let's not forget that he won the first fight fair and square, when both fought near their best Frazier defeated Ali conclusively.

Frazier was a machine, far better to watch overall than Ali. I think Ali may have been playing out his resentment over his exile, and the fact that he needed Joe for a while, then the tables turned and Ali pissed all over his former friend.

No wonder Joe is still bitter. Good to see they acknowledge that only a fool would score the first fight for Ali, Frazier clearly won that one.
You know, I thought the same. I think Ali had some sort of hang-up about being mixed race, he played the 'ugly black man' card on both Liston and Frazier, and also implied that Foreman was an Uncle Tom in not so many words.

Yes, Teddy 'The Tool' Atlas. A man who yelps on about the correctness of his criticism when a fighter falls, and then repeats his proposed tactics ad infinitum when a boxer is winning with them. For all of Duke McKenzie's faults as a commentator, he shows the contenders respect.

Anyway... The documentary could've been cut to 90 minutes, because a lot of the footage was familiar to fans. Otherwise it was frequently fascinating. Marvis came across as a really cool guy, I thought. He also gave two of the most poignant anecdotes: I was genuinely touched to hear him recount watching his dad getting beaten up by Foreman. The second thing was his telling of Joe's reply to Ali's indirect apology: 'He didn't come to me, son.'

Regarding the racial aspect, it's completely true that Frazier represented everything that was wrong with equality back then; Ali did have it easy in comparison, he just took it to heart more. Joe had to endure the same upbringing Jack Johnson fought to overcome decades previous. When I write about Patterson being my all-time favourite, it's mainly because, like Joe, he didn't look to blame everyone. Those boys had a clear cause to complain about their hands in life, but saw that dignified behaviour was the answer to racism. They were never Uncle Toms.

Ali may have been harsh, but facts are facts. Frazier was not targetted. Ali did this to all his opponents.

Maybe to promote the fight, but mainly for one reason, that is to get under his opponents skin..

It certainly worked with Frazier.

Frazier is indeed a legend. But after all this time, Frazier needs to forgive and forget.

Im sure he said he forgave him a while back...

Thanks for the heads up Syntax Error as I wouldn't even have realised it was on. :TU:

I Sky plussed it & have just watched it.

It was a great piece of telly!

A lot of it was familiar stuff, but I'm so glad that it focussed more on Smokin' Joe's perspective rather than Ali's perspective, as there has been so much written about Ali there can't be much more to tell.

I used to think that Joe should have got over this years ago, but having watched this, I fully understand & endorse the way he feels.

I love Ali, but I don't believe that he did those things to sell the fight.

Although Ali was articulate, he was not that intelligent & he was easily manipulated, especially by the Nation Of Islam & I think it's this that is the root cause of his behaviour towards Joe.

Love Marvis Frazier: cool guy! 8)

Ferdie Pacheco has to be the biggest knob jockey in history! What a pompous & arrogant nincompoop that man is! :x

I don't know what Frazier's finances are like now, but this article will give you all some insight into the people that Joe has dealing with his wellbeing, or rather maybe they just see him as a paycheck.

Are you familiar with Torrents? There's a site called UKNova, which is great for downloading TV shows that you've missed. You might have to wait a while before there's an opportunity to join, though.

WorldBoxingVideoArchive is another top place for boxing matches, especially the classics.

One of the best docs I've ever seen. Hopefully this will be released for purchase. Superb. Buster deserves his own show.

My client knows Joe and he may be selling the gym to a consortium led by Michael Grant provided the building is deemed safe by the city examiner. They were thinking of turning it into a bar apparently.

Anyone that hasn't seen the doc, maybe check 4od?

haven't seen it yet so i can't comment on how pacheco comes across in it.

but in other documentaries he comes across fairly well.

he walked away from ali after the shavers fight cos he wasn't happy with ali carrying on.

decent colour commentator for showtime back in the day as well. :)

Just watched this and thought it was fascinating. A real eye-opener into Joe Fraziers side of things.

But I thought he'd forgiven Ali years ago, I remember being given an old Boxing video (cant remeber the name) it had Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman and Larry Holmes all sat around talking with Larry Merchant (I think) about their fights against eachother and their careers in general. And it seemed they had buried the hatchet then. How wrong I was !!!!

ALSO - Did Lennox Lewis call Bruno an Uncle Tom?? I thought it was only Oliver McCall :?? :??

He actually contradicts himself because he says he walked away after the Frazier 3 fight. He also states that he sees nothing wrong with the gorilla jibes.

Nah, Lewis did it also.

The vid is 'Champions Forever', and it is fooking awesome.
Ah "Champions Forever" !!!!

Thats the one, cheers Terry. I would've been racking my brain for the rest of the day trying to think of the title :TU:

I'm going to have to have a rummage around the attic to see if I still got it.
Saying that I haven't got no bloody VCR to play it on no more :(
