Darren Sutherland= from none of these places, he's from the Republic of Ireland, or to be technical Ireland.
The actual name of the Republic of Ireland is simply Ireland, but the rest is added to avoid confusion with the term for the island as whole.

Anyway Sutherland's from St. Vincent

Just got back from Eire today - went to the fight on Thursday and then went off to booze with relatives over there for 4 days!!

They're excited by Darren over there - he's got people talking that's for sure.

I was impressed by him on Thursday. For a novice pro, he looked patient, poised and picked his punches well. The first time he hit his opponent, the writing was on the wall really. He had massive support - it was clear who the crowd had come to see and they went beserk when he made his way to the ring. A great atmosphere.

I think he'll do well Stateside as I've said before. He'll have the following over there and the style that the US market like. FM will need to bring in some pretty decent sparring as he'll not learn much in his next few fights until he's really moved up in class. I got there late so didn't catch the rest of the card except the last couple of rounds of Jason Booth's fight and Rendell Munroe's bout as well. Good night of boxing it seems.

Sutherland should turn out to be the best Irish / UK pro out of the Olympics. His strength is apparently extraordinary.

Hr loosk great, hopefully it works out, and hopefully he can go and become the best super middleweight with UK ties. I like the solid look about him, the economical, correct way of punching. Most of our best at 160-168 have been awkward, temperamental, weid (tjhough stars in their own right alal Eubank, Calzaghe).

Have really big hopes for Sutherland, he's mature, he's not young, and he looks like he knows what he's doing in there.

Alsdo, he wants to go for a "reputable world title" and that sounds promising. Hope Sky keep showing this guy,

he done the job but the opponent only had a wild right hand and when he got hit on the nose he didnt wanna know but i hope he does do well,i agree with you mark he did look very heavy handed

i think he did ok on his debut.

He did what good fighter do to guys like that no messing just jump on them and take them out as quick as poss. All so no other irish fighter has be manag. by me, I would bet my life on Darren becoming a real world champ within 4 years. Merry Christmas to all you guys on here and here to the new year.

I thought he looked too big at the weight, mobility may become a hindrance when he is fighting at a higher level.

Yeah Ireland does seem to have a few prospects at the moment, but in the past not many have eneded up challenging for world titles. Maybe that will change, alot of them have exploited the market in the USA for Irish fighters, which can only lead to more exposure on TV , and title shots.

Very true but Sutherland has that solid pro look that Dunne and Lee don't (and won't ever) have.

Sutherland looks a bit like Michael Watson, only he seems to bend his legs more into his shots, turn more into his punches getting the right leverage.

Agreed that he looks big at the weight. Could he wind up having weight woes as Benn, Watson, Collins & Eubank did?

I think times have moved on a bit since Benn and Watson etc, alot of boxers use nutritionists right from the start of their careers, so fighting at the right weight shouldn't be such a problem. It also helps if the boxer lives the correct life when not in training.
That can be differcult, as i dare say that someone like Darren would get plenty of offers from the ladies. And party invites.

I think you are getting "well supported" mixed up with being "hyped" - very different things

The only one of those that was hyped (imo) was Lee, and that was by Manny Steward - and correct me if I am wrong but he aint Irish.

If you are looking for a country that like to hype fighters then you dont have to look very far - Fraudly and Khan't spring to mind

As others have said, comes acros really well in interviews - genuine and grounded.

A little stiff and maybe lacking in speed to compete with the world's elite but nonetheless a cracking domestic/euro level fighter. Who knows, maybe he can go all the way?..

He does have that compact look and when he throws the body shots looks very relaxed, getting plenty of leverage on the punches. He looks like a pro already which is good, and because his style seems well developed, he'll probably make fast progress.

Well anyway, Suthrland is being marketed to both the Irish and the British fans. Steve Collins wasn't British was he, but he was a major fixture in British boxing nonetheless.

Well said that's important to somehow be relevant to people on both sides of the water It also works the other way with Brits coming to fight for Irish titles. Hes not being marketed as British just to British fans.

I'm chuffed that the many seem to be behind me so far which is great. There have been some who think that I am purely a come forward fighter and may have based their views on what they saw in the Olympics. This excites me as I am looking forward to showing the boxing fans that I am also a good technical boxer who can actually box well on the backfoot and be quite elusive when i want to be.
The thing is, that i love to fight and entertain the crowd! too much so sometimes! I love nothing more than a good ole toe to toe battle. My old amateur coach John McCormick use to give out at times saying I should use my boxing skills more. And my new trainer Brian Lawrence is telling me the same. He knows i can fight, but wants me to be more clinical in my approach. Hit and not get hit. Break fighters down with my Jab etc and be patient. Then if or when the chance presents itself, take them out. I want to have a long successful career, so dont expect every fight to be a war (even though i love em!).

Also I'm happy to say that my preparations ahead of my next fight on March 6th is going well. Training really hard and learning loads from Brian. My hope is to improve with each fight as a new pro.

Hi Noel,

I dont know my exact record as I never looked much at my international boxing card. Although I estimate that I've had about 160 fights and the majority were internationals. My win loss record would be about 140 wins and 20 losses give an take.. Again dont know how many i've stopped but would be high enough.. I use to box more to the computer in order to get decisions on the international circuit, so used my speed and skills more than my power a lot of the time.

I'd love to box all over the Uk and Ireland as most my fights as amateur were abroad so use to travelling. But its up to my manager Frank. I just do the fighting :)

Darren - you come across as very likeable and down to earth. I really wish you the best. I hope it all goes well for you.

I heard you performed very well (understatement) against good pro Mathew Thirlwall in sparring.

What round do you think you would stop Degale in, in a pro fight?

I was listening to an interview with Frank at he said that he intends to get you around Britain and Ireland - so that should be good exposure.

I think I will be at your fight in Wigan - but I am going to Jim Rocks fight in Dublin on the Dunne undercard so I will have to wait to see what the soon to be Mrs. Sligobhoy has to say about it.

What do you think about the pace of your progression, are you happy with route choosen? I only say that because when you look at the approach that the recently turned pro Tyson Fury seems to want ot be fighting for titles by the end of the year.

Darren what do you think about your stable mate Tony jeffries,i do think Frank has the best 2 kids who won medals in the olympics,???????????
