Terry Norris v Meldrick Taylor was painful to watch. Taylor was past his best but he was still WBA 147 champ and he got a right pasting in 4 rounds.

It wasn't a super fight, but Norris nearly killed another reigning welter champ, Maurice Blocker, on a massive Don King bill. Nearly decapitated him in 2.

But that the outcome everyone expected as Jones was clearly a shadow of the man he used to be. And given this, it also certainly wasn't a super-fight.
A lot of people had RJJ down to win.

Quote from Grilling machine on this thread:

Calzaghe wins on points and goes on to reach the middle rounds of Strictly Come Dancing '09. Enzo says: 'If he'd not been sent home, he'd have annihilated the competition over three hard dances.'

lmfao!?

who?

The link you gave shows the majority of the people saying RJJ was Shot and going to get owned.

In other words, it's not a good "source" to "Prove" your point son

ok, ok I admit - I had a few quid on RJJ to KO Joe. I still believe he was there to be taken and thought Roy was the man - regardless of age - but I'm big enough to admit I was wrong and Joe did a better than great job on Roy.

Ref: Tyson-Spinks, I'm not being smart after the event (I was only 14-15ish at the time, but I remember thinking Spinks was something of a fraud and that it was a foregone conclusion that Tyson would KO him?). OK, 91 seconds was a bit extreme, but I never thought Spinks won the first fight with Holmes (Convieniently stopping Holmes from equalling Marciano's record of 49-0). But if you watch the pre-fight press conference, Spinks reads off a piece of paper "Somebodies '0' must go" - refering to their unbeaten records. He looked shit scared and was never convinced he could win.

For this reason I wouldn't class it a 'super' fight as Spinks - like so many others at the time - was beaten before he got in the ring with Tyson.

A prime Tyson v a prime Lewis.....now THAT would have been a SUPER FIGHT!! :box:

Haye v Enzo was just Haye picking up a belt in a division he already was dominant in.
I agree in the sense it was onesided. But Enzo is quite some distance away from being the calibre of opposition of a Super-Bout.

But not a "Super-Fight".

I'm sorry. "Lacy was ment to be the Man". ?
Ignoring your poor English, alot of boxers are "Meant" to be the man, but evidently end up being nothing of the sort.

If that was the case, nearly every bout out there would be a super fight, because Such-and-Such boxer was "Meant to be the man".

I take it you thought Audley Harrison - Rogan was a "Super-Fight"? Since i'm sure Audley at some point was "meant to be the man" ?

The whole "Super-Fight" term is a stupid, childish and ridiculous concept, but no need to further rubbish it son :TU:
a unifaction world title bout that sells 20,000 tickets not a super bout?name me a bigger croud in vegas?also, lacy was definately the second coming of tyson.dig out the predictions and betting odds and see.hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Apart from that if calzaghe hadnt humiliated lacy so badly he would have probably gone on to be one of the biggest world champions on the current scene by now. Calzaghe destroyed his career, lacy is psychologicaly demolished by that one drawn out beating by a man who broke one of his hands half way through the fight.

It was well documented that calzaghe was the underdog, apart from by the british boxing fans who knew he was going to take "the next mike tyson" to school.

George Foreman - Tommy Morrison.

George was favourite but Morrison won almost every round.

Ok, not on the "Superfight" side but more on the "Beatdown" side (and still a world title fight to be fair), what Barrera did to Paul Lloyd at the Albert Hall some years ago ! Blimey, At the end of three minutes Lloyd looked like he had done 12 rounds !!!

And he did the same to Richie Wenton - how those match-ups were made I'll never know. Absolutely brutal beatdowns.

Would Mosely/Magarito count as a superfight? Margarito's stock was sky-high coming off the Cotto win and while most people (me included) thought Shane was on a downslope, he's still a huge name in the sport.

Admittedly my memory of the fight is through a boozy haze, but from what I recall Mosely beat Margarito to every punch, and hammered him with hard shots in every round before the stoppage.

True. mind you (and I might be wrong) I think Lloyd was British, Commonwealth and European champion at the time so you couldn't really say he didn't warrant at shot, he just came up against a great.

I remember Wenton being #1 for Barrera for a long time and taking more than one step aside. Wenton went a few rounds (three I think ?) but didn't get the same type of beating Lloys did. Fair play to Lloyd, he wanted to go out for the second !

Yes, Barrera toyed with Wenton for a bit (it was very quick after his junior jones loss) so was a little weary. Wasn't it for a vacant title or something?

With Lloyd he wanted to make a showcase!!!!

I just think those two fights brought home to me more than any others what a huge gulf it can sometimes be between domestic class and world class.
The fact that fit, solid boxers like Wenton and Lloyd who'd undoubtedly proved their worth at domestic level were almost treated as playthings by Barrera just illustrated in brutal fashion how big that gap can be at times.
Recent examples that spring to mind include Lockett versus Pavlik, Jennings versus Cotto and, albeit some time ago, Hare versus Cosme Rivera. The latter was really notable as Rivera himself was only fringe world-class, yet was a league well above Hare, who some had been touting as world-class potentially based on his domestic showings just prior to that.

Yes, and I thought Bernard Dunne was going to join this list after the first few rounds of his world title fight... but then he came back.

Been a few others hasn't there.

Yeh, good call Stu. I genuinely feel for some of those guys because it must be so demoralising to go from feeling you're unbeatable as you carve a swathe through the domestic ranks, only to step in with a guy and realise within seconds or minutes that it's a totally different world and that you're out of your depth - must be a horrible moment of realisation...

I think it was Bunce (or Bob Mee - sorry cannot remember which) made the observation that it usually what beats our guys in these "outclassed" fights - is body shots... and its actually spot on in lots of cases.

We've had British vs British fighters in which one was geniune world class, and the other was domestic class... Like Hatton vs Steve Smith.
