Like all communities, there are good and bad - which includes travellers.

My other half is a watch manager for an established jewellers and often travellers would give her their Rolex plus a few grand, to get it serviced and 'whilst your at it, stick a diamond bezel on it'.

They'd buy her a box of chocolates or flowers for looking after them.

By the same token, my cousin who used to work security, would often have to out travellers who came into the club and kick off. They would always be trouble. But to be fair they were the only lads buying champagne instead of Budweiser. They were certainly a fun loving bunch!

totally agree their, some are just bellends and still think its 1933 germany when hitler come to power :witzend
Not being racist in the slightest, I have nothing against the community but am not sure he can be held up as a 'gentleman' after trying to gouge someone's eye out...?

In terms of 'catching a break' in this country you would have definitely been much better off being born black than being a traveller Pedigree. In certain walks of life ( my job for example ) it's better to be black than anything else! If you are a black woman? Write your own ticket

Seriously though, when I was training ( I'm a firefighter by the way ) the instructors would often ask you to stand up and say a little about yourself before a lecture or something etc
well said mate :TU:
Anyway, I was asked by one of these instructors what I used to do for a living and what jobs I had before getting in the brigade. The most recent one was tarmacing. The instructor looked at me when I told him this, and in front of the rest of the room said with a straight face 'oh so you are a pikey then?'
Bear in mind that this brigade is forever banging on about equalities etc etc etc
Thing is it actually brought a ripple of laughter in the room from other students and trainers!

I'm not a traveller but did say 'luckily I'm not' but meant it as luckily for you I'm not but I think he read that as I considered myself lucky not be a a traveller and again cracked up!

It's mad that such a bloke, who has probably had thousands spent on him going on various equalities courses etc would be that ignorant in front of so many people who could have easily have had his job, or at the very least his rank, over that little episode.

Despite how much has gone in to all this multi culturalism malarkey it still seems that its ok to poke fun at certain ethnicities.

Agreed mate ,it seems being racist toward our community seems to be the last form of socially expectable racism in this country ..shame on the uk i say :shame:
My dear sister has worked in a top department store house of frazer for the last 10 years, the place that she works at thinks the world of her yet they dont know shes a romany gypsy ,she often mentions that her work mates take the mic out "gypsys" when they come in the store making racist remarks/jokes also calling them pikeys/gyppos/ thieves etc my sister finds these comments not just hurtful but also comical as she know most of these gypsy familys that come in the store and they are so wealthy they would never need to steal from a shop
My sister is now a manager ,but she would of never had a job there let alone made manager if they knew what her ethnic background was ,surely that cant be right in this day and age can it ?
well said as im proud of my roots :TU:

Most people are proud of their roots, but we all know there's good and bad from all different walks of life. The papers and TV always like the dramatic, so they are not going to follow the story of someone who just gets on with life.

Yes. The guy with the knife in his body is dead. The other guy has lost an eye.

Jesus politely asked you if my assumptions were true or not and you start giving abuse. I was generally intrigued that was all and based my assumptions on the telly programmes and also from what coopers said when we had a gang of gypsies shop lifting and nicking by my home.

So I'm talking about travellers, not those of you who have settled as if you've got a permanent base you'll be paying council tax etc.

My questions were about those of you who travel. How do you get car insurance, road tax, pay tax etc when you have no fixed abode.

Again asking this as genuinely interested not to get aggression and shite back.

I couldn't care less whether John Fury is a gypsy or not, the fact is that he has ruined someone's life by gouging his eye out. I genuinely cannot think of a much worse case of GBH with intent than this and as such 11 years, in my view, is a more than fair sentence.

Sentencing is designed to: (i) be punitive (i.e. the punishment should fit the crime); (ii) act as a deterrant to commiting further offences (i.e. be of sufficient length to make the offender wary of commiting the same or similar offences again); and (iii) protect the public from dangerous people.

If a sentence of 4 or 5 years was given for such a despicable and serious offence then to me none of the above criteria would be satisfied.

I'm sure Fury does have deep regrets over his actions but actions have consequences and hopefully when he comes out of prison a decade older he'll be a nicer person and less of a danger to the public.

I respect your roots but you expect me to believe Fury was hard done by the courts? Give me a break, if people go around with this macho attitude getting into fights in the street for the sake of pride then they deserve everything that comes there way, I knew one like that giving it the biggun, "no fornicator can beat me on the street" he was hard as nails until somebody shot him and left him paralysed, "not so fornicating hard now" I thought.

Come on Steve, you are a solicitor or something are'nt you? It got reduced on appeal to 9 so will have to serve 4.5. The last year should be in open conditions if he has behaved, which i would have thought he will have done. Despite what the naive on here would like to believe, nobody will have given John any grief in the system. He will have been left to get on with his time as comfortably as is possible.

I am not a Gypsy but would say there is far more casual racism directed towards them than any other race. To call someone a Pikey or Gyppo seems acceptable, even if they are just looking scruffy. To call them a Paki or person could result in prosecution!

But no one has answered the questions. I was genuinely interested to know how things work in your community. How you pay things etc without a fixed address - I have plenty of trouble getting stuff or registering as I don't have a landline so what's it like for travellers??. Everything I see or assume is based on my experiences, based on the telly programmes and what coppers etc have told me. So was asking to see if they were right or wrong.

You cant drive on the roads unless your car is insured and taxed. You would not last five minutes with the anr police cars about. If you are on a permanent site, they have real addresses and landlines! If not, you would have your mail sent to someone who does live in a house. Cars can be taxed by anyone with a traders policy, too. These are popular amongst travellers as they change vehicles or drive different vehicles regularly.

Yet under government law we gypsys are under the same ethnic laws as black people ,asians etc
Its againt the law to call some one from a romany gypsy background a Pikey or gyppo the same as it is to call a black person the N word etc yet its seems acceptable on most forums even this one to use the worlds pikey or gyppo and most posters laugh ? :-?
Here is a some evidence of how offensive the a court deems using the word

I am but that doesn't guide my view on it. He'll likely serve half unless the judge imposed a minimum sentence and as long as he behaves himself but I really think for horrific offences like this an example does need to be set. Obviously not every criminal will be deterred by getting a long sentence as most of them, when commiting offences, won't even be thinking about getting put in prison let alone how long the sentence will be but there has to be a heavy punishment for this sort of thing.

As for whether he will encounter any trouble in prison, I have no idea. I guess common sense dictates that not too many people will want to target a guy who is about 6'4, 18 stone and is a former boxer but I guess it depends on his own behaviour.

I have absolutely no sympathy for him though.

If you are on a permanent site, they have real addresses and landlines! If not, you would have your mail sent to someone who does live in a house. Cars can be taxed by anyone with a traders policy, too. These are popular amongst travellers as they change vehicles or drive different vehicles regularly.

Re: Gypsy John Fury

A lot of the supposed "racism" comes from a lack of true familiarity or understanding. I must admit, whenever I come across a group of Gypsies in a pub or anywhere else I am very weary of them. And its's not that I simply hate Gypsies. I don't. It's based on my own experiences.

I've seen a group of them beat a man senseless in front of his girlfriend. I've seen a gang of them smash my mate's pub to pieces. When I was young, they kept setting up a site on a field round the corner from where I lived. The number of bike thefts etc. went through the roof. And when they left, they left behind one hell of a mess.

Recently there was a large funeral in my city, about 500 Gypsies I think. Every pub in the area closed for the day out of fear, and there was a stabbing outside the church.

I don't say all this to justify racism, or the attitudes of some people towards Gypsies. All I'm saying is this is the impression a lot of people have. I'm sure the incidents I mention above were carried out by a tiny minority of a large community, the rest of whom are good people. But let's not cry "racism" every time there's a problem.
