That's true. Not saying the members aren't knowledgable. It's like saying Dan R. at ESPN is a Boxing Expert. Although technically he is like it or not cause ESPN is paying him. Some might not like him. Or disagree. Dan R. gets paid just like M.Kellerman. So therefore if everyone on the board is 6. Like it or not add a point to Dan R. so he's a 7. Kellerman add a point to 7.
It's a matter of ego to a person who rates themselves a 9. No, those guys don't know more than me type of attitude.
It takes a while for the youngsters with a lot of Boxing Passion to accept it. If they ever do. I know I have. Im older than those guys I mentioned. But yes they do know more than me. Lampley, Kellerman, Dan Rafael,,,and so on. They get paid..
Lampley is an idiot and just because he's receiving a check and has a label from a tv station doesn't make him know anymore about the sport than the next man.
In fact, I'd go so far as saying he isn't even a good Journalist because as a journalist one is supposed to suppress or totally omit their personal beliefs out of their stories and just tell the truth. Whenever Lampley states something about a fighter that he loves he slants it heavily and when he says something about someone he loathes then he makes it really personal and goes so far as hating on the individual without no counter commentary to combat what he may have just put out was totally incorrect.

I'm into the Sport a long- long time. I know my stuff. But..their are many regions around the world and....I am always discovering new material on dead fighters I never even heard of before. I mean, what is his name he got embarrassed by Ingemar Johanssen in his very last fight but...he has a good one against Jersey Joe Walcott; Hein Ten Hoft or something. He's died years ago. Out of Germany.
I used to take record book TO BED w/ me and I would be so enthralled with the cross checks and stuff that, I would be falling asleep reading the record book, I'd nodding off and yet I would keep going for hours.
I'm an "expert reader" as well as an Administrative expert. Their ISN'T anyone better than me. But...."Historian", that's different. I know I am probably outside the top 200 in the world. Maybe inside the Top 300. It's just so hard to measure because the true top people are "hidden amount us".
I'm "good" at this Sport. Quiet but good. 1 to 10? '10' with flaws I guess. But.....it's warp. Maybe I miss some of the current stuff. You could "center it" AUSTRALIA and I'm gonna be a newby! Though, I pick up quickly. Because I love reading the line by line.
aa) Trinidad a 3 to 1 favorite vs Hopkins back soon after that Terrorist Attack tragedy. Did you think the Odds guy had it "way off" like I did? bb) SHAVERS-NORTON-LYLE how do you rate them against one another a.t? cc) Primo Carnera...not the "greatest fighter" a.t., but.....did you know he DIED on the 34,th anniversary of his title winner vs Sharkey(?) dd) back in the days of my friend Marlon Starling.....we have only the WBC & WBA. These days, picture has "furthered" itself. What do YOU recognize as true world championships in 2016 & what do YOU draw a distinction against as far as the "true sanctioning"? ee) "does it make to you LOL....." seeing where BoxRec rates Floyd Patterson a.t? WELL IT SHOULD! Same question for Billy Backus comparative to Marlon Starling a.t. at 147.

Wow. How did you arrive at 9, Ever fought in the ring or trained fighters?
Lets see never fought -1
Never trained a fighter -1
Boxing Journalist No -1
It seems like you turned the 6 right side up.
you have to be a journalist, boxer or trainer to know boxing

who says that, you

than it must be true

A prize fighter
gets paid to fight. So they now something about fighting.
A Trainer in most if not all cases has past experience in the ring and
gets paid to provide his expertise to train fighters.
A journalist
gets paid to relay information.
See the correlation.
You however like myself don't get paid to post on a Boxing Message Board.
You are confusing your passion for Boxing as being a Expert.
thats one of the most stupid posts i've ever read.
basicly what you are saying, "when you get paid for something than you are a expert, when you do not, you are not."
so back than van gogh was poor and didnt make any money with his paintings and therefore he wasnt an expert at painting?
dude, when you have passion for something you can become an expert in it, regardless if you make money or not.

You are the one who started the thread with a number system 1-10. I answered your question and used you as a example. It could have been worse. I rated you a 6. Others however rate you lower.

About a 6 and a half. There are some very good posters here. And there are a few very biased and moronic types. I read the former and try to steer clear of the later.

It's really impossible to quantify. Relative to the average poster on this particular board, I'd probably rate myself a 7. Probably rate myself a 6 on the B&I board, as frankly there's generally a higher calibre of poster.
In terms of how much knowledge anyone actually has in comparison with all the boxing knowledge it would be possible to have, I'd say most people would be lucky to rate above 3.

Getting paid makes it their job. I definitely know more than Rafael about the sports history. Not even close. I also don't have anywhere near his contacts. On that side he's a 10, usually reliable too.

On a scale of 1 to 10, Chepppaaa overestimates his own knowledge by about 8 or 9 points.

Sometimes I am dead on, sometimes I am clueless.
I will say I am more often right than wrong, and can always back my assertions with sources.
My knowledge is pretty good when it comes to contemporary eras-
I only use sources to confirm what I already know.
But, I won't lie.
I come to this board and one other to learn stuff.
And sometimes I do.
Especially about older fighters or fighters in other countries.
I rate this board and one other about the same- 9+ as far as knowledge to be found,
3 to 5 as far as how posters let themselves be blinded to facts while following their biases.
I rate myself a 7 to 8.

Boxer is the son of a Dutch peasant, who left The Netherlands for Germany in the end on the 1930's, and became a German citizen. His amateur record is unclear. Wikipedia says he has 194 fights. 185 wins with 78 KO'S but...so far I can't tell if he lost 9 matches or less than 9 and had some draws or if he lost only one time and has 8 draws. A boxer from Slovakia credited with a win against Hoff, Rudolf Kus.
Also, & I'm leaving the edit ALONE...because..I can't determine. The open bio on the Johansson fight: on the line record and face of it, it has time of 1:00. But on the open bio of match it reads 2:35. I went to you tube to watch the fight. I'm thinking perhaps the tape has been edited. I can count only 0:35 seconds.
We can get this keyed?
And, what I say earlier about "discovery".. Hein Ten Hoff ISN'T someone I have "discovered only yesterday". & I was only talking it "generally" there. You discover new fighters most often when you are looking at a record of someone familiar..and follow a Opp line when the numbers are fascinating. [What..that could mean 107-45-16; or 45-77-15; or 150-56-5 what-it-IS!]
