my take on it:

Williams eye was already damaged. reddened, swollen, bruised but i dont remember it being cut.smiths use of the head in that round was pretty diabolical, it was worth a 2 point deduction. Instead the ref ignored it even though during the whole fight he jumped through hoops every time smith complained. williams hardly held but was often warned. occasional holding, leaning is part of the game.

after the use of smiths head the cut on williams eye was a fight changer. The ref should have asked for doctors opinion there and then and gone with that. if the doctor had said box on then williams should have blagged himself til the end of the round.

at the end of the round, if lockett deemed the cut too bad to continue he should not have worked on the eye, left it swathed in blood so the ref had no option but to then get the doctor again. for sure the doctor would have stopped it this time. then they could have decided if it was head or glove that had caused it, the result would have been based on that decision.

by retiring his charge, in his fighters best interest, locket had deprived williams of a semi 'unorthodox' victory. by stopping the fight lockett gave smith an absolute undeserved back door victory.

for smith to say he would have 100% ko'd williams in the next round is about as farcical as lord of the fekkin rings. what planet is he on? i had williams 4 points up.

I agree rhino, whatever way you look at it Lockett wasn't very clever. A more clever trainer could probably have manoevred that situation better. However I do also believe that Williams wasn't meant to be winning this and the judging and O'Connor's referring clearly reflected that fact. Sad fact of boxing, when you're not meant to win, you usually don't.

X2 some people have an agenda on this board
x3 definitely. he was pissed off but had no choice to do what he had to do.

Anyone saying Lockett let his fighter down needs to give their head a shake.

i dont think he let williams down as its not a real 'defeat' so to speak.

however, and I admire Gary Locket for his boxing career and his potential as an articulate astute trainer. I think if given the opportunity again lockett would have done things slightly differently to try and manoeuvre a victory for the jaws of victory!

Just looking at this and it seemed from the way the ref acted that he hadnt called the doctor into the corner im pretty sure the rule is only the ref can call a doctor into the corner? If the ref did call the doc into the corner why wasnt he ready to make a decision on the info the doc gave back if he didnt call her into the corner why was she there?

It was a complete shambles all round mate.

I think the more Williams has thought about it, the angrier he has gotten. I'd love to see someone interview him about the fight now. Be very interesting to see what he'd say.

It's one thing for fans on the internet to not know the ins and outs if every regulation, but you would hope that BBBofC representatives at ringside do.
