Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Lockett prides himself on coming across as a decent man of integrity. And by doing that on Saturday he let his fighter down.
He knew it was a clear headbutt if you see his reaction at the end of the round to O Connor. However, what else does he do? Why is he not screaming blue murder after the fight about HIS FIGHTER GETTING SCREWED?
Lockett was far too placid. Williams was completely shafted and lockett should have let everyone know this. He waves the fight off instead of making a scene with O Connor to show everyone it was an intentional butt and should be a DQ. Not that it would have worked but id expect a trainer to be doing that in the circumstances.
Then not mentioning anything about it at the post fight interview.
To be honest, I think lockett at the end totally let his man down.

i agree
not a good move from lockett at all

I think you’re both wrong and you should do three rounds each with Kelly Pavlik. 16oz’ers. No referee, no crying.

Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Did Locket not make the call on the advice of the Doctor? There's been a chain of fukk ups that's led to Williams being royally humped.

Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
I agree, he should have been shouting it from the rooftops for everyone to hear. There was an acceptance of what happened which I found disturbing and annoying.
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Yep, way too accepting of a farcical situation. The reaction made it easier for people to brush off how bad of an injustice it really was...
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
I think it was a good call from GL cos Williams health is more important I just think he should of called TOC over and kicked off big time, after the fight he said absolutely fook all which was baffling to me
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Maybe the blackwell injury was playing on his mind.
Pull his fighter out before any more damage could be done and let him fight another day

Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
It sounds to me like Terry O’Incompetent was the problem, not Gary Lockett. One is a salt of the Earth ex fighter and the other one wears a white shirt and ruins boxing matches. Actually, I’m pretty sick of Terry O’Connor.crusader wrote:Yep, way too accepting of a farcical situation. The reaction made it easier for people to brush off how bad of an injustice it really was...

It's frustrating, but you have to respect the old-school attitude from Lockett & Williams. No whining or complaining, just telling the facts calmly and requesting a rematch to put the record straight. That's how it should be done.
Now imagine it had gone the other way and Smith/Gallagher felt hard done by - they're insufferable enough when they've won...

I agree - what do you think would have happened if Locket had been jumping up and down going nuts?Boxerbeetle wrote:It's frustrating, but you have to respect the old-school attitude from Lockett & Williams. Do you think somebody in authority ringside would have said actually he had a point, let's review the situation?
Sadly though, I also think that it seems nice guys don't necessarily get the breaks
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Might as well have given it a shot to see what happened (maybe TOC would've caved to the pressure?). Meekly accepting defeat means it's only going one way, and it gives the appearance that the result is less of an injustice than it is.
I think they should've gone the Mick Conlan route....it was actually a bigger robbery than that fight.

It's not just TOC. The BBBC were at the fight. It's sure Lockett losing his rag would have at least got them talking.

It's true, if someone like Mickey Duff of Lou Duva had been in the corner they would've been fu****g freaking out, creating a massive scene and the controversy and fallout would've caused huge momentum for a rematch. Smith got off waay too lightly and Williams got a right royal shafting.
The Welsh camp should've been screaming blue bloody murder

Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
I also remember Kermit Cintron arguing his way back into the Martinez fight after the ref counted him out.
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Williams had a bad cut, Lockett did the right thing, bad cuts can ruin careers. Screaming makes for good telly but gets you nowhere, Williams chance will come again, and it could well come soon for the same title.
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
I dont understand why the doctor didnt call the ref over if they didnt like the cut then it would have gone to the scorecards? Or had the ref deemed it was a punch that caused the damage ? i cant see that myself as it was obvious a headbutt
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Was he cut before the clash of heads? It's inconclusive from what I've seen on tv and online.

The ref didn't spot the headbutt, so Williams would have lost if the doctor stopped the fight.jonp wrote:I dont understand why the doctor didnt call the ref over if they didnt like the cut then it would have gone to the scorecards? Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
I think like George Groves did with Froch in the first fight would have been an appropriate level of outrage to have. It seems to me like Smith is going to try and slink off without giving a rematch. I've read some things on FB today and it seems at least most of the public watching weren't conned by what they saw and most believe Williams was 3-4 rounds - I had him 3 rounds up at the time.
The post-fight interview from Smith was horrible, I watched it again before and had to cut off the horrible rat.

Good point, I remember that.
As far as I'm concerned Lockett panicked when he saw the cut. He should have at the very least been kicking up a stink and telling O Connor and everyone at ringside that it's being stopped because of a head clash
Re: Gary Lockett really let Liam Williams down
Watch the video, the first thing locket did at the end of the round was kick off about the headbutt. He was furious.
It also looked like the pretty doctor told him it was too bad to continue with but it somehow fell to locket to pull him out.
I really doubt there will be a rematch but that fight exposed one man and made the other, regardless of the result. We all know Williams is the better man
