Can’t see GGG fighting on May 5th TBH.

Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan, has just declined the opportunity to fight GGG, Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN.

Gomez explained - "Ultimately, short time, short money. Two negatives don't make a positive, here. So he's not going to do the fight. He'd have three weeks to get ready for Golovkin and he wants to win.

"It was a hard decision but he wants to win and he ultimately said,'If I'm going to go into a big fight like this I need the right time to prepare for a Golovkin.'"

How come he didn't have the same sentiments when his name first surfaced as a leading replacement opponent 10 days ago?

He said he had been training hard and was ready to take on Golovkin.

As usual in boxing, there's a lot more to the story then what's being revealed.

Feel quite sorry for Golovkin. He’s been victimised by the cheat Canelo. For whatever reason: Bad management or complications, they’ve been unable to find him a suitable opponent. He’s not getting any younger and is not working/earning after going through what I’d imagine to be a gruelling training camp. His legacy, is unfortunately compromised as he’s not fighting someone the caliber of Canelo and to settle for less would be a real waste of momentum and won’t be looked on fondly in history re: his legacy. Just really disappointing. Hoping he can make the BJS fight ASAP. Then maybe Canelo or another high caliber opponent and then I’d say his career will start coming to an end. That’s age, that’s boxing.

May-Mac drew more than 4 million PPV buys in the US alone.

What would Golovkin-Munguia "attract"?

Less than 200,000 undoubtedly. The promoters aren't eager to drop a boatload of money on a card that's already sunk.

Lennox Lewis once took his mandatory challenger on twelve days notice when a different opponent fell through.
That mandatory challenger was a future hall of famer in his physical prime.

Apparently GGG is not daring enough to take Derevyanchenko on short notice.

Eh, Vitali wasn't seen as much of a threat and was still seen as the guy who quit against Byrd at the time. The only person that seemed to view otherwise was Steward. I highly doubt Lewis was expecting much resistance. A bit of revisionist history there.

The hardest thing to comprehend with respect to O’Sullivan is, he has turned down May 5 with GGG to fight May 4 on the undercard of Ryan Garcia, at the StubHub.

Less than 200,000 undoubtedly. The promoters aren't eager to drop a boatload of money on a card that's already sunk.

The fight is no more a PPV, and I would expect the venue to be sold out, and about 800K-1.2M viewers on HBO.

Munguia is likely a better boxer than McGregor, but of course he can't draw millions of idiots to buy PPVs.

They did say the money was short, especially if HBO were trying to avoid covering the event as a PPV.

They did say the offer to face GGG was short, which possibly made the decision fairly easy in the context of risk and return.

Two fights, similar money, one's fairly winnable, the other is only a remote possibility of victory, so you make the most sensible decision by choosing the most beneficial long-term option that optimises your future earnings potential.

Isn’t that what most of us would do if we were in his shoes?

I think it’s wise of you to reserve your judgement of Canelo. I suppose you are waiting on more information and the findings from Wada re: the two positive tests. It Might be wise to apply the same standards to Golovkin and co. Will they find an opponent? Not looking good at the moment but the date hasn’t passed. If not, what are the reasons? Just revealed that Spike O’Sullivan who initially opted to fight has delayed his intentions. Perhaps team GGG will release information as to why they couldn’t find an opponent as I’m sure it’s a complicated matter and decisions, info, rational isn’t for all eyes to see/access.

I’m normally the first person to refrain from expressing any derogatory thoughts or accusations about certain situations without possessing a thorough understanding of all the facts beforehand.

However, I'm not making a premature judgement in regards to Golovkin's current predicament. If you look at the first post in this thread and review the timelines, the points I’ve raised aren’t being disputed by anyone, because I’ve merely described events that have actually happened.

We’re about three weeks away GGG’s scheduled Cinco de Mayo fight date. His team have had six weeks to implement a contingency plan and have a stand-by in place, but three fighters have been ruled-out as potential opponents within the last seven days alone, due to the following reasons:

• The NSAC refused to sanction Mexico’s Jamie Munguia
• Vanes Martirosyan was rejected for the Golovkin fight by the IBF, WBA and WBC
• Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan declined the opportunity to fight GGG due to insufficient preparation time and receiving an inadequate offer

Did anyone really expect Jamie Munguia and Vanes Martirosyan to be sanctioned as a legitimate opponent to face GGG?

Is the venue even confirmed yet? I don’t think there’s even any mention of Golovkin’s next fight on the HBO website. Tom Loeffler has expressed his own doubts about GGG’s ability to compete on the 5th May.

I’ll reiterate what I’ve said countless times in this thread, I’m not criticising GGG’s boxing talent and nor am I questioning his character, but his team should have found a suitable replacement opponent by now.

It doesn’t matter what the excuses are, other promoters have ensured that they had a suitable contingency plan in place in case one of the fighters’ in the main event of the PPV had to withdraw for whatever reason and I even named a few examples.

I appreciate that. I also appreciate that it’s complicated and this after all is a result of Canelos infraction hence why I feel sorry for Golovkin.

All the article states is that the fight won't take place in Las Vegas, which we've known for some time. It mentions the possibility of other venues though.

That just read as speculation on the part of the author to me - a throwaway comment at the end of the article, that wasn't referenced. I doubt that will actually materialise at this point.

We'll see though. I'm pretty sure today is the first time Bennett and Loeffler have officially stated May 5th in Vegas definitely won't be happening, and there doesn't seem to be much noise from anyone actually involved concerning alternatives elsewhere on the same date.
