You never know if you watch it again you might get the right result. Third time lucky

It wasn't quite that good enough a fight for me to watch a 3rd time but yeah it's amazing how sometimes you can be so far away from most other peoples opinions and I actually prefer to watch GGG of the two of them! I think there's a thread on here somewhere about fights that you saw differently from the vast majority of other fans. I can understand it if you favour one boxer more than the other but I've no real love for Canelo to be honest, in fact I dislike him after the 'Mexican Beef' scandal that scuppered the rematch!

Canelo won a close fight. GGG kept coming forward in straight lines and had no plan B to counter Canelo's movement.
Don't get me wrong..... It was close, and I don't like the dodgy excuse with the contaminated meat but I scored the original 115-113

Yeah I think maybe it was the way GGG just kept plodding forward expecting it would get him the decision that swayed me, I wanted him to show a bit more variation perhaps.

I hated the decision in this fight. Yet another example of money corrupting scorecards.
I thought GGG was an obvious winner.
The fact is was scored a draw ironically tells you who deserved to win the fight imo. Given that Canelo is GBP's golden goose and it was a big GBP's show, there was no way Canelo wasn't going to be helped if it went to the scorecards. If Canelo had deserved the win he would have got it, no ifs or buts.
The compubox fight stats show that GGG threw and landed more punches in the fight.

Hello Liam
How does the corruption work, mate?
Adalaide Byrd scored it 118-110 Canelo - which nobody agrees with.
Dave Moretti scored it 115-113 Golovkin - which I think most can agree with.
Don Trella scored it 114-114 Draw - which many of us agree with.
So is Adalaide the only corrupt one? Or did De La Hoya nobble all three of them or just two?
I don't know much about the inner workings of how to fix judging so it's great to learn from someone 'in the know'.
Cheers

Good evening Mr T,
You need me to explain boxing corruption in Sin City, really? It is hardly a new phenomena. It's very well reported from a long way back.
I will however indulge you with some observations of mine that I think supports my opionion but I accept that I am by no means an authority... one of the criticisms of boxing is that the home promoter will pay for the fight officials including their accommodation and hospitality. There is a long held concern that this a potential conflict of interest, particularly if the promoter looks after the fight officials very well. The issue being that the fight officials may feel obliged to look after the home fighter on the scorecards if they have been very well looked after by the promoter, perhaps. Who was the promoter of GGG v Canelo 1? Oh yes, GBP... but that is just a coincidence, yeah?
It is age-old that big name fighters with big name backing who fight regularly in Vegas will have significant influence with fight officials in that city, this is really nothing new. GGG has no Vegas connections nor any Vegas clout. Oscar De La Hoya is long-term source of mega revenue for the Vegas economy, casinos, multiple sanctioning bodies and the NSAC for over 20 years as both fighter and promoter. He is a big player in that city. The same can't be said of GGG and his team. GGG isn't a Vegas fighter, he's east coast based in terms of his fights and he is a relatively poorly marketed foreigner without massive fan backing unlike De La Hoya and Canelo. GGG fights dont generate money for Vegas like Canelo does particularly when you factor in Mexican Independence Day, the amount of Mexicans and Hispanics in Vegas and around it's surroundings areas. For example, GGG's last fight in Vegas in May attracted an attendance of just 7,837. Not big numbers at all.
Further, GBP operate almost exclusively off the back of Canelo. Their profits are from the money his fights generates. If Canelo loses then GBP lose and so does De La Hoya and also Vegas. Oscar De La Hoya has a history of influencing fight outcomes in that fight city or at least being involved in scorecard controversy. Do you remember his fight versus Felix sturm? That decision was bent based on finances namely that if De La Hoya got the win he would go into a mega money fight in Vegas against Bernard Hopkins generating everyone connected with huge sums. If Sturm had won, a prospective fight against Hopkins wouldn't have made a fraction of what De La Hoya v Hopkins. Money talks, its simples, no?
You state that "many of us agree with" the decision of the judge who scored the fight a draw. I disagree. You can only really speak for yourself or if you purport to speak on behalf of others you need to provide objective evidence. But actually, you will note that 29% of people on this poll felt GGG easily won, whilst 48% thought he did enough to win. 77% of a vote is most people, no? Only 12% on the poll thought it was a draw. That really isn't "many' in comparison to 77%, is it? Go on twitter and see fighter reaction to the scorecards and many called the scorecards bullshit. The compubox fights stats would appear to back the 77% on this poll.
I can accept that you thought the fight was a draw. No problem. I just think that maybe dirty economics played a part. 118 - 110 in favour of Canelo isn't incompetent, it is bent. It is a thick Judge who swallowed the GBP/Vegas party line too literally - interestingly she is a Vegas resident.
All just my opinion.
PS an interesting article from The Telegraph online states the following:
"There was also peculiar scoring from Trella in the seventh round, which was won decisively by Golovkin. His scoring of that round ultimately made the contest a draw overall, yet it was Byrdβs performance which attracted most criticism from within the fighting fraternity."

But 48% thought it was a close fight but Golovkin edged it. Moretti scored it 7-5 to GGG whereas Trella had it 6-6. That's only one round difference between a close win & a draw.
I do admit I score drawn rounds too much. I try not too but that's just how it is.
Two of the judges were in the right area. So is Byrd the only crooked one? If so that's a hell of a risk for a promoter to take.

Golovkin won 8-4 for me. Ididn't think it was difficult to score at all.
Canelo won the exchanges for the most part but he was getting jabbed and worked over for most of the rounds...or sitting on the ropes and avoiding many but not all of what Golovkin was throwing.
He was much better than people expected. He's not the kid who lost to Mayweather. But he still can't sustain a high pace for 12 rounds...or even 3 minutes of a round... If they can get him the right drugs he can win the rematch.

I had GGG by four, but was well aware that those who are swayed by flashy work will have loved the single shots by Canelo.....still, Canelo was being jabbed to death so for me, one winner....

good post liamlion. canelo was always expected to get the benefit of the doubt in a decision.
to be honest the fight was close in a sense, you can score certain rounds to each fighter, if you are looking to.
its good to have a rematch.

I saw Canelo snatching the points win, which at the time put me in a global minority of one (excluding Mexicans). But interestingly it's a view more people are coming around to. I look into the Tuan Jim crystal ball and see a more convincing win for El Freckles in the rematch.

I had it the same. I think GGG will be more vicious than usual in the rematch. He wants blood
Round 5 in the first fight was absolute class from both guys.

Disappointing fight. Golovkin plodded and Alvarez was too tired to engage enough. Alvarez was the A side so Golovkin needed to show something extra. We know lifeβs not fair. If youβre not the teacherβs pet you have to show more.
McCallum v Toney 1 is the great middleweight draw.
