Although I am a huge fan, got to love the way that Lewis is now dishing out sage advice on making big fights happen via Twitter, considering the Bowe fight never happened and the Tyson fight happened 10 years too late
In fairness, Lewis/Tyson was not a viable fight in 1992.
Lewis had only just announced himself as a world class HW by the end of 1992 & Tyson was in prison by that time.
Agree about the Bowe situation; that was a pathetic saga by both teams.
The most natural HW fight of the time never happened because their 2 teams behaved like tarts & we missed out on a potentially great rivalry.

1996,Tyson knocks out Frank Bruno in 3 rounds and Lewis is no.1 contender to the wbc. The fight might of been nore competitive and Lewis might if got more credit than he did for beating a prime mike tyson with only 1 loss on Tysons record at that time

I don't think Lewis totally fancied it at that time. I dont know if he would have won either. He had a rough first round with a shot Tyson and shamelessly held for the round.

Bowe's arse went and so did Don King's regarding Tyson, Lewis would have fought either at anytime.
Unfair. They signed to fight in 94. It would have taken place in 95 on TVKO. Everything was set; all they had to do is come through Larry Donald and Oliver McCall respectively...
Again Bowe tried arrange a mega fight, in 96 for his WBO title--Lewis opted instead to fight Ray Mercer for 10% of what he would have made vs Bowe. HBO were mystified. I'm not insinuating Lewis was scared, but with Tyson mega millions up for grabs Lewis preferred to make his case with a dramatic KO of Mercer and defer a lucrative but risky Bowe fight till later. In both the above cases, things went awry.
No way, lewis vs bowe in 96 wasnt gonna happen, bowe didnt want any part of lennox lewis at any time in the pro's if he did then he would of fought him at the peak of his powers in 1992 after beating holyfield rather than 96 after getting his ass handed to him twice by golota, bowe at the point in 1996 was a shadow of the man who challenged evander for the undesputed heavyweight title so why would lewis duck him for a hard fight against mercer(which i thought he lost)? Bowe didnt wanna know lewis at any point from 1988 till he retired
Okay, I'll repeat myself. They signed for a fight in 1994. A TVKO extravaganza in the spring of 1995, for the WBC title. All Lewis needed to do was beat Oliver McCall. This was widely documented and is easily verifiable. So your belief that Bowe wanted no part of Lewis is demonstrably a myth, easily debunked. Why continue to believe a myth when the facts contradict it?
Glyn Leach in Boxing Monthly wrote an editorial about Lewis declining a Bowe mega fight in 96. As a Lewis fan, he too was infuriated by it. Bowe had KOd Holyfield and in spite of being frozen out by the three major bodies was seen as the legitimate world number 1. Why decline a fight with him in favour of Ray Mercer, whose last two losses were against men Bowe had brutally KOd?

Yes, he accepted step aside money in 1996 so that Tyson could fight Seldon and secure the WBA belt. It was after Ray Mercer had given Lewis a real working over (BM HEADLINE: 'WILL LEWIS
EVER BE READY FOR TYSON?') and Tyson with less than 4 rounds of boxing in 5 years had gone through Bruno in frightening fashion, which had really put Lewis' struggle vs Bruno in context. Lewis was very happy to have that money and defer a Tyson fight for a while.

He got $4m for effectively letting DK fighter Seldon defend against Tyson. Tyson's team tried to force it through in court (WBC/WBA unification fight) but lost and vacated the WBC title instead. He then got a vacant shot against another DK fighter, McCall.

The order of business for DK was Tyson vs:
96
Bruno for WBC
Seldon for WBC/WBA
Holyfield cash grab for WBC/WBA
97
Moorer for WBC/WBA/IBF
Then look to see what was happening with Bowe and Lewis, but more realistically a Foreman intergalactic-sized Mega Epic, were a HBO/Showtime co-production possible, with McCall and Botha in South Africa contests also keeping the belts safely in the DK universe.
They woulda got away with it too, were it not those meddling Lewis and Holyfield kids.

Why did Tyson pay Lewis step aside money then if he got stripped anyway? The way I understood it was Tyson had the belt and wanted to unify and then fight Lewis but would have fought Lewis if Lewis didn't agree to step aside.
So Tyson got stripped for not fighting Lewis? Doesn't make sense as to why he paid step aside money.

Yes, Lewis got a lot of money for doing nothing, I don't blame him. No one saw Tyson losing any time soon so seemed a totally sensible business decision. Certainly Lewis needed to regroup after Mercer, and redeem his image somewhat.

DK paid the step aside.
WBC then vacated the belt because the court case mandated that Tyson face Lewis for the WBC title.
I don't think DK thought that the WBC would strip him but that's what happened. Of course, he tried his best for that not to happen.
Widely reported in all the papers at the time:
http://articles.latimes.com/1996-05-17/ ... ghts-lewis
The handlers of Mike Tyson couldn't win in court, so they paid Lennox Lewis, who agreed Thursday to step aside and let Tyson fight World Boxing Assn. champion Bruce Seldon on July 13 in Las Vegas.
The New Jersey Supreme Court had blocked Tyson's bid to fight Seldon after Lewis had gone to court, claiming that he should be fighting for Tyson's World Boxing Council title, rather than Seldon. Attempts by Tyson and promoter Don King to overturn that decision failed, and that crown will not be at stake when Tyson fights Seldon.
Though terms of the agreement were not announced, Lewis reportedly will be paid an amount in seven figures and is guaranteed a fight with Tyson by Sept. 1 for the WBC title, provided Lewis wins a tune-up bout.
http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Bruce ... Mike_Tyson
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the following on September 25, 1996:
Mike Tyson relinquished the World Boxing Council's heavyweight championship yesterday. The WBC declared the heavyweight title vacant and said it would hold a public purse bid for a title fight between Lennox Lewis of Britain and Oliver McCall of the United States. A New Jersey court ruled earlier this year that Tyson had to fight Lewis before facing World Boxing Association champion Bruce Seldon. But Tyson's promoter, Don King, paid Lewis $4 million to step aside. Tyson stopped Seldon in the first round to win the WBA title. The Lewis and Tyson camps could not agree to a deal for a bout between their two fighters. Tyson, therefore, was stripped of his title by the WBC, adhering to the court ruling. "We are disappointed and surprised that Tyson decided to give up the title instead of fighting Lennox," said Dino Duva, Lewis' promoter. Tyson is scheduled to put his new WBA title on the line against former undisputed champion Evander Holyfield on Nov. 9 in Las Vegas.
https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/lew ... 47818.html
Wrangling over the heavyweight championship took another twist last night when Lennox Lewis and his associates were offered $4m to let Mike Tyson go through with a challenge for the World Boxing Association held by Bruce Seldon.
The contest, scheduled for Las Vegas on 13 July, was wiped off the heavyweight agenda earlier this week when the Supreme Court upheld legal restraints on Tyson undertaking any contests until a defence of the World Boxing Council championship against Lewis.
It now appears that Lewis may be willing to step aside on the understanding that Tyson will not be risking the WBC crown against Seldon and that he will defend it against him later this year, probably in September.
Lewis's principle associates, Panos Eliades and Dino Divo of the American promotional organisation, Main Events, insist that the deal has not been finalised but reports from New York suggest that following talks with Tyson's promoter, Don King, they are close to an agreement. Not done and dusted but close.
It is also possible that Tyson in turn will step aside enabling Lewis to fight the vacant title, one he gained by decree three years ago when Riddick Bowe gave it up rather than fight him.

Comparing the young prime fit Tony Tucker of 1987 with the 35 year old recovering drug addict Lewis fought, and beat less impressively, is a "valid point"? How? It's a dumb point that drags the thread away from the issue being discussed. Tyson's 96 demolition job of Bruno

was compared to Lewis's performance versus Bruno. Lewis
did accept money not to fight Tyson in 96. I'm talking about what
did happen, and you seem to be grasping at straws for reasons that are unclear, perhaps to preserve some of the debunked myths you've been regurgitating, such as Bowe wanting no part of Lewis even though in the real world he willingly signed to fight Lewis, a point which can be proven by spending roughly 3 to 4 seconds on Google.

Im not arguing with you its you arguing with me so if its that easy to prove post the facts if not then i believe what i remember happened in 1993 when lewis fought bruno and 3 years later a shot bruno fought a fresh out of jail mike tyson and was that intimidated by tysons clan that he had 3 pounts one on his head one on his left shoulder and one on his right shoulder he crossed himself that many times. You keep regurgitating the same sh1te but not posting me tge "proof" of what your saying. Lewis also took bruno to court to try and stop him fighting tyson because he was no.1 contender. Tyson didnt wanna fight lewis and him paying step aside money then getting stripped of the wbc belt proves all i need to know about that situation. did accept money not to fight Tyson in 96.
Ok Jim i give you the fight was signed in 94 for lewis to face bowe in the september of 95 but i cant find anythin if lewis crapping himself that tyson splattered a static over muscled bruno.

I hope this doesn't end up another Dirk v Mickey battle of wits,i stopped reading stuff on here because of that
No im having a debate on an issue with him,he is adamant he is right i just wanna see proof that lewis seen tyson blow a sh1t scared frank bruno away then went the colour of boiled sh1te and didnt want any part of tyson. As far as i remember lewis has always wanted to fight mike tyson and riddick bowe and he was like wilder is about aj about fighting them
We've already established your memory is awful!

Who is this we? How can i remember something that i didnt hear about till today? If a debate is too much for your brain to take get off the forum,i was debating with u cause i hadnt heard about bowe but instead of proving your point you just insult people, prove your point next time Jim. And my memory is fine lewis went to court against mike tyson and don king regarding them NOT wanting to fight lewis next and also lewis DID sign to fight bowe but got beat in the fight before the scheduled fight so were in this was lewis scared to fight anyone if them? I think its your memory that needs sortin out pal
