Journeymen in general. Try explaining that concept to a fan of another sport, and you'll be greeted with blank expressions, at best, and undisguised disgust at worst. Put up and coming fighters in with up and coming fighters. The good ones will figure it out, and the ones that aren't so good hopefully have other life skills.

A little pet peeve of mine with this system though is the following scenario, which is rare but does happen.

Fighter A wins a round clearly and its 10-9. He gets a late knockdown and its 10-8. So he essentially scores an extra point for that knockdown.

Fighter A is winning a round clearly for 2 minutes and 50 seconds and he is knocked down, then it becomes a 10-8 round for fighter B. That's a 3 point swing and for me isn't a fair reflection of the fight

Low level boxers:

‘Team whoever’

‘Get at me for tickets before they sell out’ - if Joshua isn’t on the bill shows literally never sell out

‘Opportunity for sponsors to come onboard’ - no business benefit here but please give me free stuff

‘So and so are the best in the business for xxxxxxxx’ - I know nothing about scaffolding/building/whatever but this company gave me £200 to buy my shorts

I don't get the issue with sponsorship, if you want to get anywhere in most sports you need sponsors, even if it does just buy you a pair of shorts, put petrol in your car to get to the venue, pay your hotel costs etc.

i agree, knockdowns are often weighted too heavily compared to sustained success

That's not correct though. 10 point must simply means one fighter must have 10 points, not that you automatically win a round 10-8 if you knock your opponent down.

Take Round 5 of Joshua v Klitschko - Wlad goes down but wins the round - that should be a 10-10 round on the basis that Wlad wins the round, but is knocked down therefore has a drawn round instead of winning it. People seem to get confused with the knockdown/10 point must system meaning that a knocked-down fighter gets deducted a point for being knocked down - that isn't true.

The above scenario, using that analogy, would see Josh win the round 10-8, having been battered from pillar to post but having landed a good right hand. That just isn't right. 10-10 means he 'gains' from knocking Klitschko down in that he doesn't lose the round, but Klitschko doesn't lose the round purely by virtue of one punch, when he's given Joshua a shellacking for the other 2 minutes.

reality is that with so many judges a kd just defaults to a 10-8 round though. and pretty much never will a round be scored level if 1 guy gets dropped, even if totally unhurt, but then clearly lands good shots and wins every other part (without kds etc of his own)

like, why does sustained success get weighted that much less then 1 moment

That's exactly my point. It's not correct according to the rules, but that's the way it always seems to go.

I did a quick Google search for the official AJ-Klitschko scorecards but I couldn't find them. What I did come across though was a collection of fans scorecards and an overwhelming majority scored round 5 as 10-8 to AJ. Which reinforces Deadpan's original point about people not understanding the system

How to score a round with a knockdown in it seems to come up every year on boxrec. To save going round the houses on it yet again, see viewtopic.php?f=9&t=186170&p=4081191 for one of the previous discussions on it.

Yep I'm sick of the love for journeymen.

Ok, they save a lot of shows but also do the game a disservice simply by not even trying to be competitive.

Sadly, most of them are damaged goods too and they've still got the best part of 35 years left. Seen too many at shows shuffling about like that...

1. "Apologies for the language";

2. Not letting us hear the cornermen between rounds (presumably because of danger of naughty words); and

3. The renormalisation of PPV (e.g., Eddie Hearn justifying the Whyte PPV by saying he promised Whyte a 'good pay-day').

-Hometown decisions. Any bad decisions really. If judges are routinely screwing up a fight they should be sacked.
-BS PPV's, if the main event isn't a great fight between established stars with a quality undercard then it shouldn't cost any more. Regardless of the made-up feud between two fighters or that one really deserves the money.
-Apologies for the bad language when the fecking fight is on at two in the sodding morning. We're watching two men attempt to knock each other out but we might be offended by some bad language. The sad part is it only comes up because there must have been complaints.
