Going straight back in could just as easily be interpreted as a guy who really thinks he should have won and can do better, and is eager to get back in there and avenge it instead of waiting around. We heard all the excuses, it wasn't him, it was those external things...
And stepping aside could be explained as a guy who knows deep down he's getting his assed kicked anytime next by Fury, so why not take some extra money before taking another beating, instead of just taking the beating without extra payoff?
It can be flipped any way just going by the choice. I get the sense that Wilder really believes his excuses and is confident in beating Fury in an immediate rematch or in a fight later on

Nah, there’s a risk with taking warm ups if you know you’re finished deep down.

Could feel 100 percent confident vs hand picked random opponents (let's say Chuck Martin or Helly) but not Fury, the guy he's failed to beat twice already

Wilder couldn't deal with Fury's size, so he doesn't have many options to help him improve. There's Joshua (who'll leapfrog him against Fury), Joyce (who's tied up), Helenius, Bakole, Hrgovic, Ajagba and Yoka. The last three are unbeaten from a PR point of view.
Yoka's slippery enough to make sense, but then he might just get banged out early doors. Hughie's another decent practice option. I know it's aunty's bollocks, but Wilder has all the tools to beat Fury, just not enough technical insight! He was swinging from two gardens down, socially distancing before it was cool.

If he were a few inches shorter I think he'd have losses on his record, but I give him credit for mastering his superlong levers to avoid punishment. Wilder can rewatch their last fight and see quite a few openings for his fight-ending righthand, but he wasn't able to predict any at the time.
It's the main reason I find Fury frustrating to watch, because he makes schoolboy errors at the same time as showing the intelligence to predict their safety! Because they're only errors if he's made to pay, but I felt Wlad and Wilder were too reticent to prove it was all judgement without any hint of luck. AJ-Fury will be the biggest test for both.
