If Arum thought it would be a sure win for Lopez, he would make it next instead of saying there are too many obstacles. Truth be told Haney is a very live dog against anyone at his weight. Arum continues to be bad for boxing. He's ruining Crawford's career.

Devin Haney in negotiations to face Teofimo Lopez

Few in boxing have suffered a more catastrophic 2024 than Devin Haney, beginning the year as a pound-for-pound contender and ending it with a dented reputation and ongoing legal procedures. However, the 25-year-old may well have the perfect opportunity to re-announce his talents to the boxing universe, as he lines up a mega-fight against Teofimo Lopez ahead of his comeback.

Haney became the youngest undisputed male champion of the four-belt era when he twice defeated George Kambosos Jr. in 2022 to first win and then defend the coveted lightweight marbles.

In the year that followed, ‘The Dream’ scored a controversial win over legendary fan-favourite Vasyl Lomachenko but issues making the 135lb limit saw Haney then vacate his world titles in pursuit of a move up to the super-lightweight division.

On his debut at the weight, Devin Haney became a two-division world champion as he whitewashed WBC title-holder Regis Prograis in an extremely dominant and authoritative display that proved the youngster to be wise beyond his years.

Although, little could have prepared him for what came next.

Haney went into an all-American showdown against Ryan Garcia, and after a confusing build-up that that included Garcia missing weight, ‘King Ry’ went on to floor Haney on three occasions before claiming an upset majority-decision win.

Yet, the drama wasn’t done there, as it was discovered that Garcia had tested positive for a banned substance named Ostarine on both the day of the weigh-in and on the day of the fight – eventually resulting in that result being overturned to a no-contest, reinstating Haney’s undefeated record.

In the months that have passed, Haney has vacated his WBC super-lightweight title and has now taken legal action against Garcia, with his promising boxing career completely derailed by their April encounter.

Now, the Californian technician hopes to get back on track and is hoping to end what will be his longest spell of inactivity since turning professional by jumping into a mega-fight with WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez, as per Forbes.

“According to sources I spoke to with direct knowledge, Haney is negotiating to face Teofimo Lopez in his return bout. The source didn’t share dates or money, but Haney and Lopez would headline a massive card in 2025 if the fight is agreed to.

“The card would be broadcast on ESPN and promoted by Top Rank.”

Like Haney, Teofimo Lopez boasts a career-best win over Lomachenko but has proven to be an inconsistent fighter in the outings that followed.

‘The Takeover’ lost his belts to Kambosos in a shock result but then dazzled on the big stage when he dethroned Josh Taylor at 140lbs three fights later.

Since defeating ‘The Tartan Tornado’ to become a world champion once again, Lopez has underwhelmed in two title defences against Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett but a clash with Haney may well bring the best out of the New Yorker once again.

Despite being the champion at super-lightweight, there is no guarantee that Lopez-Haney would take place with the title on the line or even at that weight, after both men have threatened to move up to welterweight division in recent months.

Official: Devin Haney-Teofimo Lopez signed for August 16 in Saudi Arabia

Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez have each signed a contract to fight August 16 in Saudi Arabia, an official with knowledge of the negotiation told Boxing Scene on Monday.

The bout pitting the pair of two-division champions – who each won on the May 2 Times Square card in New York – is an anticipated clash of two of the so-called “Four Horsemen,” a phrase coined by member Ryan Garcia that also includes unbeaten lightweight titleholder Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

Davis is also scheduled to fight August 16, defending his WBA lightweight belt in a rematch versus Lamont Roach Jnr in Las Vegas.

The bout between Haney and Lopez is expected to be fought at a catch-weight of 145 pounds, according to an official, and the pair have agreed to enroll in random drug testing administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

Lopez, 22-1 (13 KOs), was asked about his next fight and Haney, 32-0 (15 KOs), on Friday night at the Golden Boy Promotions fight card in Las Vegas. Lopez smiled, raised his eyebrows and said, “Maybe him.”

Haney’s father/trainer/manager, Bill Haney, pressed for the Lopez fight in a recent conversation with Boxing Scene, saying Haney was a more attractive, more lucrative choice than unified welterweight titleholder Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

“I thought you [were] looking for the big-money fight? That's what you complained about your whole career – that you weren't able to earn the right … but now there’s nowhere else to run and no place else to hide,” Bill Haney said of Lopez on May 16.

The elder Haney was also upset at Lopez’s apparent utterance of a racial epithet last month.

“Devin told me he will beat Teofimo for all the disrespect he has uttered, to tell him, ‘Take it back’ every round and take back every word he’s said disrespecting the culture,” Bill Haney said. “He knows Devin is going to be a punishment. There will be no more Teofimo Lopez; just like there’s been no more JoJo Diaz; [Vasiliy] Lomachenko; [Jorge] Linares; Regis Prograis [other opponents beaten by Haney].

“[Lopez is] picking people and barking up the wrong tree.”

Lopez, the current WBO titleholder and lineal champion, defeated then-unbeaten interim titleholder Arnold Barboza Jnr at the May 2 card in Times Square, and Haney followed by defeating former unified 140lbs titleholder Jose Ramirez in a bout that drew criticism for its inactivity.

Instead of fighting Garcia next, however, in a rematch of their controversial 2024 no-contest in New York, Haney, 26, watched Garcia lose the May 2 main event to Rolando “Rolly” Romero. Haney therefore is turning his attention to the 27-year-old Lopez.

The card, which has yet to be formally announced by Saudi Arabia boxing financier Turki Alalshikh, is expected to land on DAZN.

DEVIN HANEY-TEOFIMO LOPEZ TALKS COLLAPSE FOR AUG. 16

Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez were discussing an Aug. 16 fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but negotiations have now collapsed, The Ring has learned.

The 145-pound catchweight matchup would have featured two of the sport’s youngest stars in a fight that has been brewing for years.

Haney and Lopez scored comprehensive decision victories on The Ring’s May 2 show in Times Square. Haney defeated former champion Jose Ramirez while Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) retained his Ring junior welterweight championship with an impressive victory over Arnold Barboza Jr.

“I was looking forward to making this fight with Teo, it’s been in the works for a while now,” Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) told The Ring on Tuesday. “I thought this was the best time to make it happen. I did my part. We waited for days for Teo to sign his part of the contract and he came out and said this isn’t a fight he wants to make.

“I’m still willing to make the biggest and best fights. I’m looking forward to working with His Excellency, Riyadh Season and The Ring on the best possible opponent. Teo is a fornicating duck. No promoter should work with Teo because he wasted everybody’s time.”

Lopez’s team declined comment.

Haney, 26, is the former undisputed lightweight champion and WBC titleholder at 140 pounds. The fight against Ramirez was contested at 144 pounds, Haney’s first welterweight bout.

Lopez, 27, is also the former undisputed lightweight champion and holds the WBO and Ring championships at 140. Both fighters scored career-best victories via decisions over future Hall of Famer Vasiliy Lomachenko.

So Teo still gets offered fights after calling his boss a dicktator, but he immediately declines a big fight afterward?
Meanwhile, Haney is the one who gets shit on social media just because people hate him so much :D

What a time.

I think Haney and Teofimo have been pathetic for the last few years. They both need this fight. They both need a meaningful fight of some sort.

Why would Teo duck Haney..? :maybe:
I'm utterly baffled. :KO:
Who would Teo prefer instead of Haney..?
It's also mind boggling that Boots turned down the offer to fight Teo. :o
I just don't get it with these Silly modern day Businessman/Boxers...

I don't like Haney myself and I was on Garcias side when they fought, just because I like chaos.
Nobody can deny he is a very good fighter, though.

‘I don’t do well with take it or leave it’: Teofimo Lopez goes in depth on failed negotiations for Devin Haney fight

Teofimo Lopez says he was offered less money to fight Devin Haney than was previously agreed to.

Teofimo Lopez spent some time going into more detail as to why he opted not to go through with a summer fight against Devin Haney. As Lopez explains, he negotiated his purse for three fights with Turki Alalshikh heading into the Arnold Barboza fight, but then when the Haney fight was proposed it was for less money than had been agreed, therefore he couldn’t go through with it in good conscience.

“So it’s not that I don’t want to fight Haney, guys,” Lopez would say. “This is not talking bad on Turki Alalshikh and it’s not talking bad on any of the guys that was part of the deal, however I don’t mind fighting anyone they put in front of me but I am a prizefighter, I am a person that is about principles...we signed fight two and three for X amount of dollars...

“We successfully did fight one with Barboza. Fight two includes, and I quote, ‘Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis or any other fighter that is in that high calibrated level,’ meaning it could be Haney, Rolando Romero, anyone that you guys want to see us face against.

“That was fight two. That was signed and sealed with X amount of dollars...when we came to fight two [inaudible] and Riyadh season said ‘we’re not going to pay you what we agreed for August.’ So there you have it.

“And the fact that they publicly announced the fight before I even signed the damn deal. Like, couldn’t they just wait. Part of me feels like I kind of got jobbed in the sense of was the Boots fight something that was even happening or not? Was it or not, or was this all a scheme to just put Haney in front of me because, you know, Haney and Garcia messed up the bag for a rematch.

“I was the only one that performed and executed and tried to make everyone excited [on the Times Square card] just to come back with ‘take it or leave it.’ I don’t do well with take it or leave its as I’ve had that in my past with Top Rank. So I felt like if we signed an agreement on a number can we stick to the assignment just like they expect us as the fighters to, and I quote, ‘do what they want us to do’ in that damn contract, including perpetuity, meaning they own our names in the cause of the event, and possibly a year depending on the contract that you’re signing.

“So we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what comes around. I ain’t gonna wait. I’m grateful in my position right now, staying ready, focused...Who the f-ck is going to duck Haney?! Nah, seriously. Did you not see his last fight? Kid doesn’t want to fight. They’ve been piggybacking off my back, off my name, but ‘I’m not a big star.’ They piggybacking off my credits but I’m not the main guy.”
