Does no one remember him against Mitch Rose? Journeyman with a horrible record but a bit of nous and he baked Bean. He had no punchers chance against anyone in the 90s, including a sick Michael Bentt.
That Mitch Rose loss unfortunately coincided with Boxing Monthly giving him a cover story. Glyn Leach was mortified!
Butterbean steadily declined in popularity afterwards. I think by the time the Holmes fight arrived nobody really cared anymore. However it was clear he had some genuine talent as his son ‘Babybean’ tried his luck and got sparked pretty early in his pro career.

Baby bean was kod in a round in his only pro fight. He was stopped in all 3 his mma fights too. I guess father Bean's wife had no chin or fighting skills and Babybean inherited those.

Butterbean obviously had an aptitude for fighting but would be no threat to anyone in the top 20.

So just seen a YouTube video that has Butterbean as one of the best 90s heavyweights never to win a world title……..so out of the 90s champions who would he have potentially beaten:-
Damiani
Mercer
Morrison
Bentt
Hide
Bowe
Akinwande
Vitali
Douglas
Holyfield
Lewis
McCall
Bruno
Tyson
Moorer
Foreman
Seldon
Briggs - was the lineal I believe?
Looking at the list possibly Hide if he connected first, and Bentt?
Views welcome
He's probably one of the biggest Boxing Celebrities of the 90's due to his involvement in the Jackass movie and WrestleMania 15, and just generally being a circus sideshow that got people's attention.
There is no titleholder that he would've beaten in the 90's even with 10 tries, and he's not one of the Top 500 Heavyweights of the decade.

Did Butterbean come from toughman originally? Not many did very much from such humble beginnings. I remember Cody Koch was another one, and he did get to fight Wlad. But is probably more famous for later being murdered.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Butterbean put Toughman on the map more or less. The guy that founded Toughman was even his Pro Boxing manager.
And yes his achieving Celebrity Boxing status despite being an Obese guy who really wasn't very good is noteworthy.
I think his gimmick of only fighting in 4 rounders helps. His fights usually weren't boring because they didn't really have time to be. He also I'm sure couldn't have went more rounds if he'd wanted to.
He fought Holmes in a 10 rounder, and Holmes was in his 50's at the time, and long retired, and won handily.

He was known as the king of the 4 rounders well before he made a big name for himself. I think EA sports even had him on the cover of their toughman game in the mid 90s. Then he was in the first knockout kings game a few years later. I remember the toughman game on the old mega drive/genesis.
They stuck him in with debutants, no hopers, cans and bums and t he wheels came off big time against 1-6 Mitchell Rose. He was really just an undercard freakshow anyway. He laid out Louis Monaco the fight before but he was in his second pro fight or something, he would go onto to stop Kevin McBride a few fights later so that tells you about the levels of freakshow in the mid-late 90s at heavyweight.

Monaco did improve though (a bit). I think against Butterbean, Monaco was purely still a bodybuilder chancing his arm.

I think it was a DQ loss as if memory serves he hit him after the bell, but I know he decked an older Buster Douglas on the comeback trail in the 90's. I remember that being on Tuesday Night Fights. Vaguely

Prime Butterbean (around the time he KO'd Macneeley) v Charles Martin...
Was Bean good enough to beat someone who recently (ish) won a genuine world title?

martin's not a bad fighter, he easily stopped washington and had ortiz down multiple times. gave kownacki a tough close fight. was national champ amatuer in the usa too. he's just easy to lol at due to the combination of him being crazy + the aj loss
too much for bean

In a 4 rounder I think he’d have chances against a few, especially if American judges rewarded his aggression. 12 rounds …not so much!

Think he’d take Marciano over 4 rounds?

He couldn't last 2 rounds with Mitch Rose jabbing and right handing him. He wouldn't be able to beat any of them. You're delusional!

No need for a explanation mark! Only making the point that sometimes 12 round fighters find a change to a short format difficult. Hence upsets in events like Prizefighter over 3 rounds. But yes, he shouldn’t be winning any of these fights. But you wouldn’t want to bet your house on him not grabbing the odd controversial 4 round decision or some such oddity.

So how did the Holmes fight come about? Going from 4 rounds to 10 rounds against a HOF fighter?

Holmes had trashed Bean in the last chapter of his autobiography Against the Odds, so there was a WWF style backstory to sell the fight as a 'grudge match'.

The Bean wouldn't have been out of place in one of those old style fairground boxing booths.
"£XX paid to anyone who can last a round with this man"
To be fair, he was popular with the tv paymasters. Culminating in a PPV against
an already 3 feet under Holmes.

I get what youre saying but a 300lb Bean would've absolutely splattered half drunk fair attendees...... maybe Babybean would fit better.
I wonder how Bean would've done against unlicensed 'legends' like Lenny McLean?

Bean would've sparked Mclean and the 'hard men but not actually boxers' guys no problem, he may have been a side show but he was still a real boxer with like 70 pro fights and he threw shots much more naturally and explosively than stiff len did........he beat a couple recognizable and hardnosed mma fighters even in mma too. he had some real power, certainly at that level
