Always liked him. Even in the ring. Something alluring to see a guy with losses on the record get it together and become world champion later in their career.

jamesmcdonnell wrote: 07 Mar 2024, 03:51 Nah, definitely didnt make a living, very little money in writing about boxing, unless youre writing for newspapers, or have a big selling book.
I enjoyed most writing really detailed fight reports, where i could almost create a mini play of the fight.

Most fighters sadly were poor interviews, their not geared up to wax lyrical about themselves or their career.

Once interviewed kostya tszyu just before he fought hatton which was pretty cool, dont even hace the article or audio transcript.

I often found i got good results from written intervews steangely, as it gave people time to think about responses. My favourite was Jay Larkin, the head of boxing at HBO.
I was very fortunate to earn a good living from boxing for quite a long time. That was a good few years ago now. The reason I made money was for the exact same reason I mentioned, getting out and about. I agree, there is even less money now unless you are elite,IE Fury,Joshua. I love the sport, best sport in the world imo. But I have to say it has been devalued(boxing journalism) in part by so many so called You tube channels/experts. Soon as that lot started I felt legit journos is were devalued. Admittedly, they are improving standard wise now but in the early days some of them were awful. But the main reason is,unless you toe the line with promoters,pr,even boxers, you can forget it as a serious writer imo.
I wish I could remember who it was, but there was an old school journalist who told me he never read press releases and never went to press junkets, or to anything organised by the promoters - he said that if you started trotting out their bullshit, you'd never write about anything of consequence.

I agree that a lot of the so called journalism out there now is poorly written sychophantic drivel, and indeed journalism in sports certainly for boxing, has become very very poor indeed, with some obvious exceptions.

There simple isn't enough public interest for there to be any real money in it any more.

I will write another book at some point, I enjoyed my last foray into it, even though i made absolutely bollock all money from it.
Your right there,it's a shame about the lack of public interest. There are so many different interests/past times available to people now I think a few other one time high profile sports are suffering as well. Cricket is one example. 20 years ago even Speedway,Basketball and Wrestling used to find their way on to national TV and the back pages on a regular basis. Now it's pretty much Football everywhere. Just my opinion. Good luck with the book👍

It’s a bit weaselly to be sharing private messages and then slagging that person off on a forum.

More than you Doofus. I'm not getting into a slanging match but you are negative and nasty on here. Spud gives his insight to the forum and has been on here more than a decade longer than you. I like Spud, I was horrible about him when I'd had a drink like a wally and he was forgiving in response. That is a measure of a man for me.

I like Johhny a lot. A very impressive chap: a highly intelligent boxer, and a highly intelligent person. Kind hearted, too.

I think he has been a very good pundit over the years, particularly summing up a fight. Excellent at spotting if someone has talent, too.

His book goes into detail on the nerves he suffered on his big night against De Leon. Its very honest and fair play to him for addressing it as he could have just glossed over it.

Always came across as a decent bloke, and his style was probably good for him in the long term even though it was a bit much to call him 'The Entertainer'

The irony being that you, as a relative newcomer, don’t stop trying to police the forum and reply to my every post.
If you wound your neck in you wouldn’t be getting threads blocked.

Why not start a positive thread about boxing I am
Sure you will enjoy the commemts that follow.

I thought Johnny did amazingly well As a boxer, surpassing by a massive margin what Ithought he was capable of.

I also thought for years he did an outstanding job as a Sky Sports pundit …

There is a but … in my opinion he has gone down hill rapidly involving himself numerous spats on social media and thus showing what a hideously bad attitude he has.

I text him my thoughts on the standard of sky boxing and all i got back was this …

I agree with you. When he first started doing the IFL (and others) interviews, he gave a balanced view. For a little while now, he's become a little bit more arrogant and his opinions have become (IMO) intentionally controversial. E.G. His view of Usyk changed very quickly.

That said, as humans we are constantly evolving, so maybe that's the reason.
