To survive that utter shellacing in the ninth to see the final bell in the 12th (and possibly winning the round) is a special level of fitness. This was the most anyone has been able to consistently put it on him, and the fastest pace I've seen him fight at since the first 4 rounds of the Cunningham fight.
That's the best he's been since Wlad.
Sadly some boxers best performance ends in a loss, I think this was one of those- so far- as I think he has a good chance if there is a rematch.

Remember the whole Carl Froch is unathletic quote by Andre Ward. By athletic he meant fast twitch muscle reflexes, which can be a sign of athleticism, but a lot of fast twitch muscle athletes are tired in two minutes, Carl Froch could fight at a steady pace for about 20 rounds and was one of the fittest boxers on the planet, that's not "unathletic"

i saw stephen fulton being called a better athlete than naoya inoue, despite being outmatched in pretty much every area, including speed and power

a lotta the time 'athletic' vs non athletic is used by yanks and is just stereotypes people have about fighters of certain backgrounds. who looks more like they'd play in the nba or nfl

ya , stamina is part of athleticism too. a guy like william zepeda can throw 125 punches a round for 12 rounds. a physical feat that few are capable of regardless of prep. fury and a guy like chris arreola could havve all sorts of rolls and could still go a harder pace than ripped david haye, froch as mentioned had a great engine.

fury's engine has been pretty good, he could drop more weight but not sure it would improve it much

Americans seem to use the term athletic or "athletic talent" as in explosive, high jump, fast sprint, quick hands, snappy power, reflexes. More stuff associated with "flashy style" that expense more energy (not necessarily efficiently though). Whereas you can have all of that and still not be "fit" (cardiovascular as they say but I'm not sure how much the heart veins have to do with it as much as the lungs and dissemination of oxygen around the body)

Wayne McCullough has the reputation for his adamantine chin but it was his constant workrate and fitness that had Morales himself wanting to quit in the corner. McCullough was a perpetual motion machine even when being hit with sledgehammers

Tyson Fury's best shape was against Vinny Maddalone. He was a lot more chiselled and seemed to have a lot of muscle back then.

It seems after Klitschko is when he's never looked quite as good with excess fat but maybe he cant get rid of that. He was clearly in great shape here and he's always had an odd kinda body type since he's so tall and long.

But who knows what his training regime is like. AJ clearly lifts a lot of weights where as I guess Fury doesn't.
