Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
I just can't get my head around it. To give himself the best possible chance of winning, why doesn't he get himself in great shape? He only has himself to blame, I suppose.

He is in great shape, he might not look it but to box 12 rounds at that level you need to be very fit.
Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Behave yourself. Great is not a word you can use to describe his shape on Saturday. Great shape was the guy in the other corner. If Fury was in great shape he wouldn't be carrying around them love handles. You're not seriously suggesting he wouldn't be better off without all that extra fat, are you?Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 07:13 He is in great shape, he might not look it but to box 12 rounds at that level you need to be very fit.

He was in great shape for him
He was only 5lb less against Klit where is body looked a lot different to what it is now. The flappy paddles are likely from the 10 stone weight loss and probably account for a few pounds. They weren't as pronounced pre-bender days.

Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
You are comparing what someone looks like to how fit they are. He's never looked great even in his early fights. Mid 30s and after blowing up to 25 stone or whatever it was he's unlikely to look much different. Would he box better weighing 240, a lot of his success is down to him being as heavy as he is and even at 240 he would still likely have love handles.jwfg wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 07:22Behave yourself. What a load of bollocks. His success is despite the weight, not because of it.Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 07:32 a lot of his success is down to him being as heavy as he is and even at 240 he would still likely have love handles.

Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Fury has decent stamina, always has had - he clearly cuts corners in training, even if that is his natural build, he's obviously not living the life between fights,, and that's enough to cost him those margins at top level.
Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Carrying excess weight at heavyweight can have it's upsides and downsides. Upsides are usually body shot defence and overall punch resistance while carrying the extra weight obviously puts more pressure on stamina and the legs.
He either doesn't train hard enough, eat well enough or he values the upsides. I think it's likely all of the above.

Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
That was tip top for him !
hand speed and reactions were there , upper body movement , decent footwork , punch selection was all in play .
But to keep it up round after round requires a level of stamina he just doesnt have .

So what weight do you think he'd should be? The lightest he's ever been was 245 and that was 12 years ago.jwfg wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 07:45What a load of bollocks. sounds like he's in decent fighting shape for a 19stone man to me

I mean he’s not a middle aged man. He should have stayed in the optimum Wlad fight shape if he was fully dedicated. I think it’s common for talented fighters to cut corners.

also, if he *wasn't* in good shape how the hell did he come back with any legs at all after the rd9 beating?
he looked pretty decent on his feet for a dude who'd been sent to the shadow realm for about 30 seconds
I don't think he#d recover if he wasn't fit

Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Because he is the freakish enigma called Tyson Fury.

Wlad's last fight, he weighed 240, twelve years before that, he weighed a pound or two more.Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 08:50So what weight do you think he'd should be? Uysk's two year older than Fury, he's in great shape, AJ a year younger, great shape.
Fury just fought his first fight for all the belts against arguably his best opponent. This fight was at the top of his career path.
Ever see Ali, Frazier, Jack Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Foreman, Liston, Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson, Vitali or Holmes come to the ring like that by the age of 35?

Different body types though. Fury's taller than most of them and his genetics aren't like Klitschko or other fighters. Look at Fury in his early fights, he had little definition or muscle even in his early 20s. He's never been any different, his fitness is what is important, not how good his six pack is. Fury was up on his toes in the 12th against Usyk and won the round on most people's cards, he wasn't blowing out his arse. Bruno looked like a bodybuilder and as a result lacked stamina.jwfg wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 09:20Wlad's last fight, he weighed 240, twelve years before that, he weighed a pound or two more.Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 08:50So what weight do you think he'd should be? He had a phase where he did have a decent physique. As he's proved though, you don't need to be body beautiful to be a good fighter.

Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
No, but fighters lived much harder lives back then, more fights, way way more and harder sparring too, they were well in decline by the time they were 30.jwfg wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 09:20Wlad's last fight, he weighed 240, twelve years before that, he weighed a pound or two more.Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 08:50So what weight do you think he'd should be? Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Fury is in top shape, to keep his feet going, for such a big man demonstrates this.
He is a seasoned 12 round fighter.
The fight got me thinking about fighters from the past, Ali types, how would they survive against the modern giants, Lewis, Klits,
But then if Usyk can, I'm sure Ali would.

They were in decline, but most of them were still active at thirty five and never looked like Fury.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 10:13No, but fighters lived much harder lives back then, more fights, way way more and harder sparring too, they were well in decline by the time they were 30.jwfg wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 09:20Wlad's last fight, he weighed 240, twelve years before that, he weighed a pound or two more.Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 08:50

Yes, but for the reasons I had mentioned before. Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Different body types? Don't talk silly. If any of the fighters mentioned didn't eat and train properly, they would carry weight they didn't need. Whether that be around the middle, or spread around the body. The reason Fury is carrying fat is because he lacks discipline, not because he's got some masterscheme that no other great heavyweight in the history of the sport has thought of. Enter the ring carrying too much fat and it gives you an almost invincible superpower. Listen to yourself man. It's crazy talk.Controversial wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 09:47Different body types though. Re: Why Doesn't Fury Come Into The Ring In Tip Top Shape?
Sorry mate, I agree 100% with everything in bold and the counter argument would be knowledge, nutritionists, sports science, food tech etc etc. As mentioned earlier, Usyk doesn't have a problem staying in shape, neither does AJ, nor did the Klitschkos. I think it was you who mentioned margins. Physically carrying around an extra stone or so around your middle takes its toll and that's the margins right there.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 10:38Yes, but for the reasons I had mentioned before. Agreed, it's all part of the reason fights go on longer, including of course PEDs.jwfg wrote: ↑20 May 2024, 10:46Sorry mate, I agree 100% with everything in bold and the counter argument would be knowledge, nutritionists, sports science, food tech etc etc. As mentioned earlier, Usyk doesn't have a problem staying in shape, neither does AJ, nor did the Klitschkos. Even more than the weight carried, it's the poor living habits between fights. Poor food, booze, and generally not keeping close to fighting shape, all takes a bit toll. Fury has taken a lot of liberties with his body.
I was amazed he was able to perform at the level he did - he has a lot of natural talent, but his lack of discipline and focus, both outside and inside the ring, is the big difference.
