What did Lazcano etcetra bring to the table other than low risk?? Why couldn't Witter have been in the ring instead of Lazcano?

Fighting Urango was a bit of a joke, Urango got a gift against Rabah. Hatton gassed against Urango and resorted to hit and holding for the next 8 rounds. I stopped buying PPV's after that and only bought It because they added the Witter show as well
this is about beating up a cocky yank.
I ws entertained by him getting a hair cut In the ring though. Paulie has fast hands and could use them to his advantage against Hatton but I doubt he will and Hatton will just outwork him.

As for Witter I just hope he forgets about Hatton now and wins some belts back as that was just a bad night at the office.

i disagree with that.

Uruango also has potentially KO of the year and is the IBF mandatory again so can't be that bad.

Why has this turned into another Hatton v Witter thread? Both are on the way out.

Hatton-Khan would be massive, when Hatton's a bit further faded and when Khan has matured.

he was struggling with gomez pressure at times.

hatton would have him running for his life in there.

Junior has to now comeback and make the best of what he can from boxing, fighting some time this year would be a nice start.
Terry which part of getting a fight with Floyd involved turning the fight down in 2004, 2005, 2006 (according to Ray Hatton the fight was turned down at least 5times), waiting until Floyd had left the light welterweight division, fought Delahoya and retired? What's his excuse for not fighting Witter from 2000-2006 and beating up old men and scrubs? What was his excuse for signing to fighting Malignaggi before Witter lost? If Hennessey had paid off the judges as Team Malignaggi did in his last 2 fights then Hatton would still be embarrassed right now. It has simply been a calculated risk-reward choice, which boxing is often about, it is nice when a fighter wants to take on all comers though, thats what I call a real 'peoples champ' and 'man of the people'

Witter does need to concentrate on getting fights as this 1 won't happen for him now, which it may never have done anyway. At 34 without it will be a long road back with maybe no glory at the end of it

Thats a good post. I had the feeling watching the Hatton documentory recently they were trying to brainwash us into believing Hatton was "just one of the lads" and all that money hadnt changed him. The fact is he doesnt care about his fans anymore as he claims to and making money is his main aim. I think he is heading for a fall.

Terry D wrote:I think recent events have proven that there is not enough salt in the sea to apply to a Ray Hatton statement. Once Hatton was with HBO other people would have worked to make the fight a reality. Leaving the minor details to the man in question, and we saw how they went.

Straight after Tszyu was the only time I heard real talk of making the fight, only Floyd then moved up to welterweight. Then Hatton moves up there and finds it tough so the fight looked in jeopardy, so they built up a Castillo fight. Floyd moving up to beat Oscar made the fight possible because there was no way Floyd would stick to that weight and he needed a fight that HBO could sell and that could make shed loads of money for all involved. Step forward Hatton, at the right time.

Prior to the Vegas trips the Floyd fight may not have sold as well over there as it eventually did. Plus, for the final time, in 2005 and 2006 Witter was as welcome on US TV screens as an hairy Muslim male at a mid-Western sorority panties and bras slumber party. Actually selling Hatton-Witter would have very hard, especially as Witter fans tend to offer lip-service support then back out the moment they have to actually attend one of his fights. Leaving Hatton to carry everything. Collazo, Urango, Castillo and Lazcano, even Maussa, all had one thing in common, people did not seriously object to their fights. That was not the case with Witter.

As for taking the fight straight after Floyd. Lazcano was a perfectly acceptable opponent for your first bout back. If you were happy for Witter, in your perfect little world, to wait from Sept to May for a fight then it shows exactly why you guys do not understand the root of the problem. Witter does not, plus did not, fight often enough, he is US poison and he is incapable of stringing impressive rounds together, let alone fights.

Hatton did all the groundwork to make his US name. Was he supposed to go to HBO and demand a match that would kill momentum in one way or another just to make a few agoraphobic British Junior Witter 'fans' happy?

They were operating in different stratospheres. Hatton was going to a place, the Floyd fight, whereas Junior was getting the occasional runout in a career that is not going to take off. Not unless his fans pull their fingers from out their keyboards and actually attend his fights, he then becomes popular, making fights becomes easier.

Talk risk to reward all you like but Witter turned down a Cotto fight that was high risk and potentially huge reward. He cannot say the money was shit, it is always going to be shit for him. He cannot say he was out of shape, he derides Hatton by saying he is in shape all the time.

Hatton took a risk by fighting Mayweather, he got a one-sided beating that could have ended his career and support. Sure he got paid well, but then I suppose you think Witter craves the Hatton fight for Corinthian reasons and really would fight him for free.
The fight was offered to Hatton in 2004 as Floyd's first fight at the weight. It was offered for Floyd's Novemeber 2005 PPV slot, Hatton choose Maussa instead saying he wasn't ready, Floyd then tried to get Cotto and Judah but had to settle for a none PPV fight in Mitchell as Judah argued about money and wanted to make the mandatory against Baldomir. Then in early 2006 when Judah lost Floyd again tried to make the fight with Hatton as Judah's value obviously went down, Mayweather even offered this PPV date to Margarito but Margarito had a tin pot fight scheduled. For his November 2006 PPV fight Floyd wanted a big name and was trying to get Hatton (who would fight Urango) or Mosley (who had a tooth ache). Floyd had to choose from between Spinks, Baldomir and Margarito. Floyd then got his big money fight against Delahoya and retired. But when the Hatton fight came available his father told him it was easy money and the rest is history.

Hatton was finally cashing out plain and simple and was taking ZERO RISK. Mayweather was P4P no1 so losing to the best isn't a hit on his stock. His 140lb status wasn't endagoured, even though the fight was offered to him at 140 according to Mayweather himself, its laughable when Hatton pretends he was too small at welterweight, the fight was offered to him at 140. Mayweather supposedly wasn't a puncher. Saying it is a risk is laughable (although if you want to say he could have been hurt is fair enough but you can get hurt anytime you step in the ring).

Witter was at least as credidible opponent as the no names Collazo, Urango, Maussa, Lazcano (we could talk about the WBU tripe).

Witter turned Cotto down on 1-2weeks notice as it is inadequate preparation time. Should we list how many big names Hatton's turned down on 4months notice?

Bottom line is Hatton is all about calculated risks, its not a bad thing and makes sense when it comes to making money. He's been very very fortunate to have the support he's had because its meant he can have every fight on his own terms and his pick of opponents to make him look good. Hatton is an excellent fight none the less.

PN, what's the source for the 2004 date as that's a new one to me mate? (P.S I don't mean that in a funny way, just interested to know)

I was told many moons ago that Floyd did offer the fight to Hatton for November 2005, but the contract for Maussa was already signed (it was originally supposed to be Hatton v Harris, which is why SKY invited Billy G to the studio to be their studio guest for the Maussa Harris fight after Ricky beat Kostya).

Source is indirectly from Mark Taffet bout 2 years ago for the Floyd offer.

We had huge thread discussion on Britain's ESB Board about it and it was in the boxing news sites at the time, I don't have a direct source. The general consensus was it was a lack of ambition and there was the feeling 'who knows Ricky may catch the smaller Mayweather late and make an international name for himself', that was back in 2004 when Ricky was in the same position pretty much as Khan (ok he'd been in with Tackie/Phillips) and people were screaming about when he was going to step up his comp. Mayweather was reportedly willing to come to Manchester. This was before Mayweather had headlined a PPV and was 'barely' scraping $1million a fight if my memory serves me right. Thats why despite his weaknesses I think Khan can become a major star because he'll get the right fights picked at the right time just like Ricky was able to. And ofcourse both have pools of talent aswell as the financial backing

3. Hatton took zero risk.

1. Because he was and turned it down, Cotto was also in discussions in 2004 when both were up and comers
2. Yes P4P no1 versus Linear Champ, both happen to be in the same division, F ALL in sense in that, Mayweather offered the fight to Hatton
3. Thats right, has his career suffered from his loss to Mayweather? NO, so wheres the risk? There wasn't 1
4. No, it was covered at the time I'm not spending all day looking for a source, if you're going under the guise of a boxing hack pay attention to the sport instead of just asslicking Mancunian fighters.

Bit of a generalisation, but to a point I agree with this.

Why is Witter even being mentioned on this thread, it's got fornicate all to do with him. He was spanked by a virtual nobody - end of story.

This is about Hatton and Graham. And I agree it's been handled terribly.

If Hatton was fighting Karl Taylor he'd probably still sell 50,000 tickets (hope that hasn't give Team Hatton any ideas), it doesn't make the fight right for anybody apart from Team Hatton.

I'm a British Boxing fan and I want to see the BIGGEST and best fights possible and from a British Boxing fans point of view they don't come any bigger than Witter-Hatton. Hatton had more than ample opportunities to fight Witter between 2000-2008 and he repeatedly turned it down to fight the likes of Hutchinson/Phillips/Rios/Tackie/Pedersen/Vilches/Stewart/Oliveira...... Whatever his 'excuse of the week' was, it stunk.

It wouldn't irk me so much if Hatton hadn't repeatedly told us that he was in the sport for the glory and not the money and how much he loves the fans (I was there to hear his empty words on Jun 5th 2006), followed by numerous money motivated decisions including Bumming his own beloved loyal fans with the Vegas ticket fiasco rather than having some taken from his purse.

If the Hatton fans knew a jab from hook they would have been calling for the Witter fight, fortunately for Ricky they don't and he can continue to fleece them in uncompetitive fights where he is a MASSIVE starting favourite.

Hattons had the silver-spoon treatment throughout his career and the only reason that's been possible is because of his massive following, I don't feel as though he's repaid any of them with his cynical matchmaking. Also him and his teams PR is getting worse and worse by the day
