Ricky Comes Clean About Graham's Sacking
Re: Ricky Comes Clean About Graham's Sacking
It seems like Ricky made the right choice. He can't go easy in training because he doesn't want to hurt his trainer.

No need stick the knife in though.Horse wrote:It seems like Ricky made the right choice. He can't go easy in training because he doesn't want to hurt his trainer.
There is a lot more to this than meets the eye.

Re: Ricky Comes Clean About Graham's Sacking
Ricky could have said "you are my trainer, and he is your assistant" OK maybe Billy isnt as fit as he was but his knowledge and his ability to mentally prepare Hatton is surely very important. I dont think we are being told everything. Will Hatton be the same fighter without Billy around and having him in his corner? I dont think Billy would have minded delegating to the younger man. If Hatton just didnt want to pay two of them, then shame on him. With only a few fights left it seems daft to let Graham go. They won fights as a team and Billy was a vital element.

What a load of bollocks, you don't need to be super fit or even that physically able to be a trainer.
Eddie Futch was still a top trainer in his 80's.

Re: Ricky Comes Clean About Graham's Sacking
Physical fitness as a trainer as nothing to do with it. Angelo Dundee was still training fighters up until a few years back - he trained welterweight David Estrada for the early part of his career. A trainers main job is passing on their knowledge about the game to the fighters, overseeing the fighters training and devising strategies for the fight - and providing sound advice during the fight. Anyone can take a boxer on the pads - whenever I saw the training camp of Erik Morales it was never his father who took him on the pads. But I always thought Hatton and Billy were quite close and it would be a shame if he really was sacked over money.

Does seem a strange decision, I wonder if we will here more on this.

Hatton doesn't come out well in all this tbh. If he valued Graham's input he would still have a part to play in the setup. I hate to second guess situations because I know neither of them or their trainer/boxer relationship in reality. But it does appear that they have come to the end of a line for one reason or another.

look at Freddie Roach - the guy is near the top of the tree amongst trainers and is battling the early on set of PArkinsons.
Training fighters doesnt boil down to solely acting as a 'pad man' IMO

Pads can be restrictive.

I just hope the Hattons do not in any way blame Graham for the Mayweather defeat.

But did Mayweather teach him this or has it always been Oscar's tendency to shoeshine?Terry D wrote:Ps Now sure how things stand but Floyd Mayweather Senior is not the man for the job. He got Oscar flurrying with a straight back and trying to block and parry. Hatton with his chin up letting shots go is a recipie for disaster.
Ideally the should get Roach but imagine it, they get rid of Graham due to ill-health and bring in a guy who is suffering from Parkinson's, and getting worse with it by all accounts.
It sounds like they aren't having a head coach other than Beard
Re: Ricky Comes Clean About Graham's Sacking
The split doesn't seem too amicable. Nothing will surprise me with Team Hatton though

Just a quick question Terry, what colour are Billys bed sheets?Terry D wrote:He said he won't work with an amateur coach. Fair enough if that is his opinion. The other week, when he thought he could get away with saying Graham had retired off his own back, Ray Hatton came out and said Graham was an expert and his advice would only be a phone call away, it seems Graham's advice was, or would be, "fire the assistant", but obviously they don't value his advice. They should have admitted he was sacked, it makes them look like amateurs.acenabox wrote:Read what the article says ! Billy Graham wouldn't work with anyone else. Eddie Futch and Freddie Roach i am sure had people to help them in camps. Graham has put himself out of a job by telling Hatton he didn't need or want help
Ricky's statement does not make sense. Ray Hatton told us that Graham left by mutual accord in an "emotional meeting", now we hear that Ricky sat Graham down and sacked him, in an "emotional meeting". Does this mean they would have been happy for Billy to say he had retired just so they could sit out the bad PR that may come their way? In the end Graham himself had to use BBN to point out that he had been sacked, something Ray Hatton must have known, surely, if not what kind of operation are they running there?
As for them doing this for Graham's own good. So, his body is falling apart and the TV screeens showing this put things into focus for Hatton, leaving Ricky no choice but to replace him. Well Hatton has been seen having painful physio on TV for his elbow, he picks up chest infections often, maybe he is the one who should be looking to retire. If Graham is clapped-out then the same should be said for Hatton. Both men are suffering after a long career but both made the decision to see things through to the end. Graham said Hatton had two more fights in him, maybe they feared Graham expressing this forcibly after the Malignaggi fight, the second fight of that statement. Hatton probably does have a couple more fights in him but with a fledgling promotional company to promote they need a flagship fighter, step forward Ricky Hatton, for 5-6 more fights, if they can get them out of him. Maybe they now need a company man in the corner and all the things Hatton once loved Graham for, his outspoken nature and all the rest, now mean that Graham's face no longer fits in the Hatton team.
I think Hatton is a good guy, always has been, in this case I think the phrase "a lion misled by donkies" sums up the complete arse they have made out of a relatively simple situation.

Mayweathers are not the people for the job, pure 'punk trash'...

Billy is not physically up to the physical side of the game but according to Hatton, didnt want to work with another coach and oversee stuff, where does that leave Hatton?
Working with a guy who wont let anyone else in but not doing a good a job as he used to?

It's been a very bad PR year for team Hatton, first the Witter dodging debacle (with an assortment of excuses) and now he gets rid of his mentor (with an assortment of excuses)
