Absolutely loving reading this thread - great to hear everyone's experiences, whether that's the fellow novices or the experienced pros. I think it illustrates for me what's unique in terms of boxing, that being the sheer emotional intensity of it all, from the moment you set out on it. I don't think those who play other sports, particularly team sports, would understand the extremes you can go through, ranging from fear through to ecstasy. It's that, coupled with the sheer physicality of it all, which makes it so hard to achieve - just one chink in your armour, whether that's mental or physical, and you can be brutally exposed. It's why I've got so much respect for anyone who steps in the ring and even more for those top ams and pros (including some of the guys on here), who've walked the walk.

I boxed amateur in England in the eighties. Fights 16 Won 13 Lost 3. Won a couple of regional ABA/NABC titles. I have also coached amateur (ABA Qualified) and professional (fully licensed) and taken lads to National titles. Just a fan these days!!.......................

Thoroughly enjoyed the training, and due to the fact I'd been pitted against a work collegue I was also looking forward to the fight. I'm kicking around 14.5st he was about 12 and he is alot faster/fitter than me.
The fight came and it was over in 56 seconds. My corner decided I wasnt defending myself despite the fact that I had my guard fully up and was still jabbing out.
It had kicked off in the crowd moments before our fight so the theory is they wanted everyone out a bit sharpish. The three fights after mine were all also ended far to early
Would do it again though, would want to fight someone in the same "stature" as myself though

Some of the bouts in white-collar boxing are pretty tasty affairs and certainly wouldn't look out of place in an amateur, or dare I say it, a pro ring. I've seen one or 2 lads who actually could have had a couple of professional bouts. I remember one tournament ten years ago which took place in Broadgate Arena promoted by Alan Lacy's Real Fight Club, and the visiting US team from Gleason's Gym had a fella who was a quantitive analyst in Wall Street, but who was also a quarter-finalist in the New York Golden Gloves a few years before. He had the moves, the timings etc, and it was a real pleasure to watch.
