I had 8 fights between the ages of 14-16. Won 3, lost 4 and drew 1. Wasn't the best by any means but loved the training and the atmosphere in the gym and I met some great people, real boxing folk. Had to pack it in due to football and Gaelic football commitments. I always considered going back into the gym for the training more than the fighting but I keep putting it on the long finger but might make it my new years resolution.

Hated most things about the amateurs to be honest!

Won all 10!

Started boxing at 9 years old and 1st fight at 11,won 2 fights out of 1st 7 which wasn't a great start.

Lost a bit of weight and then won 2 National schoolboy titles and boxed for england on two occasions against the Irish and Russia winning both.Won a gold medal in the Trondheim gold Cup at the age of 16 and then gave it up.Finished up with 47 fights and losing 11.

I wasn't dedicated (LAZY) enough to train and was always unfit in most of my fights,as somebody as already said...Best years of my life.

Pretty much same story, boxed as a schoolboy having 16 fights. I got stopped in my first as I was so nervous I just ran at him  :KO:

Learned a lot from that one :TU: I then won 12 on the trot and lost 2 of my last 3 both with the same lad

I then tried Kick Boxing and had 15 contests form the age of 17 to 22 winning 13 of them, I then had an operation and had to have part of my Esophogus removed putting an end to my fighting days

Even then I stayed in the gym and trained the younsters, I am now nearly 42 and still very much involved with the game in an official capacity 8)

Started off doing Tae Kwon Do (TAGB) and reached black belt, winning a junior national championship at the age of 15. However, became increasingly disillusioned with 'semi-contact' sparring and as I'd always loved boxing I made the switch at the age of 20. Ended up having nine bouts - won my first six, five by stoppage. Then went off to do my post-grad in journalism, came back and was entered in the novices at welter (all previous fights had been at light-welter and didn't have time to shift the extra weight). Won the Western Counties Northern Division but lost in the next round on points - unbelievable how much difference the extra weight made and realised I had to get back down to light welter. Had one more bout, but then got my first job as a reporter which involved a lengthy commute, so had to knock everything on the head.
My only regret is not starting boxing sooner - I first went in a boxing gym at the age of 10, but my mate didn't want to carry on going and I was too intimidated at that age to go by myself. Though I also have to be honest and say if I was 15 years younger I would have loved to have had a go at MMA as well.

Had 4 schoolboy bouts between age 13-15. Not to boast, but I won them and found them easy. Then I discovered beer and other adolescent pursuits and drifted out of training. Resumed training at 18, took it very seriously, had my first senior bout at 19, and found the difference between schoolboys and seniors to be immense! Result, lost by TKO 1. Been licking my wounds ever since. :(

i started boxing the same night i started my First Job was 17 , always went to see my Bro fight and thought i could do that ( with pint in hand i might add ) . people always telling me i should come up the gym.

So went up the gym took a good year on and off training and got my first fight.
Luckiliy i was taught the basics well as i was knackered after first round war and then won it with my jab and straight rights after that.

The difference between being Fit in the gym and a fight was totally different

Went on to have about 25Fights won about 19
havent fought in about 6 years but go to the gym quite regualar and talk of comeback creeps up every so often. :bag:

how did everyone find nerves , i described my early fights as feeling like i was in a dream and never heard no one else say this until my white collar show on sunday night , where i guy who is actually not bad stepped into the ring for the first time , at home in front a crowd that he sold 74 tickets to ( which i dont think was too bad for a first fight) but the occasion got to him , he used the same dreamstate description that i did , and couldnt get his head together , getting stopped in the 2nd round .

I was one of the first white-collar guys to go over to box in Gleason's Gym in New York in April 2000. It was an extremely surreal experience and I wish to God i'd trained properly for it. I went up against a computer programmer from Washington. When I first laid eyes on the guy he looked so weedy that I thought I would destroy him. However, later on when I got into the ring he was all "tooled up" i.e. headguard on, gloves on etc, and he looked so much bigger that I immediately lost my confidence. I proceeded to fight and he knocked me over with a shot to my nose! It was a harsh introduction to boxing (by my standards!) but understood from then on what it was all about. Great trip though, and the next evening we all went to Madison Square Garden to watch Lennox Lewis v Michael Grant.

Being away from home def took the pressure off esp when being brought in as an oppenent and not expected to win.
I always found the fighting the easy bit, a few knocks never hurt anyone and you have no time to think or worry!
I used to think boxing was nearly all a physical sport, I realised later the mental side is far more important
