I dont see how he got an At Large bid. He was not training or competing in an international tourney. That is why Zeddie could not apply for AT LARGE. Zed had to apply for an independent spot. Ashley Gartland is handling the applications. Ballard nor Russell were on team USA, so how would they qualify for an AT LARGE spot? USAB just held a meeting Tuesday to go over the applications, so how would anyone know that they have a spot yet?

I read the article on Ballard. Congrats to him on getting a spot. I still dont understand. Maybe At LARGE and independent are rolled together? Based on AT LArge criteria, Ballard would not qualify. Based on independent criteria Ballard would qualify.

More than likely the article got it switched. Does anybody know if USAB is handing these out more than frequently since last year I do not remember that many IND or ATL at the USA Champs.

ZMOMMI - did the form you received say "At Large"? I was told that USAB is just using the At Large form for both At Large and Independent slot applications. That makes it even more confusing. I think you are correct that Ballard received an "Independent" slot unless he had a conflict due to being on the team for Baku that got cancelled by USAB at the last minute. It is possible that he missed his LBC's tourney or something. He then would be eligible for the At Large slot. Either way, he is now eligible to compete at the 2010 U.S. Championships.

He lost at his regional final so that is not the case. But you're right either way he can compete.

I just got an email from Nicki Smeland. She is saying that there were no spots available at 141, the regions were full. Thats funny. Ashley Gartland has been telling me that spots were available all week. Oh well. There are so many people in Zeddie's ear right now, that I am just trying to keep him amateur a little while longer. I was really hoping that he could have received a spot. Maybe I can persuade him to go to PAL in Oct. Good luck to everyone in the tourney.

Did I see names of boxers who are now signed with the WSB on the U.S. Championships lists? Didn't think you could do both.....

I thought that was to point of WSB. That you could fight PRO (in WSB) and still amatuers. Your right Mel it makes no sense to think about it.

The WSB boxers were supposed to be able to box in the national championships (one tournament) and that is all they are guaranteed. The franchises don't have to allow them to do any other amateur bouts except Olympic qualifiers and the Olympics.
