Cars can be taxed by anyone with a traders policy, too. These are popular amongst travellers as they change vehicles or drive different vehicles regularly.

I've seen a group of them beat a man senseless in front of his girlfriend. I've seen a gang of them smash my mate's pub to pieces. When I was young, they kept setting up a site on a field round the corner from where I lived. The number of bike thefts etc. went through the roof. Recently there was a large funeral in my city, about 500 Gypsies I think. Every pub in the area closed for the day out of fear, and there was a stabbing outside the church.

I don't say all this to justify racism, or the attitudes of some people towards Gypsies. All I'm saying is this is the impression a lot of people have. I'm sure the incidents I mention above were carried out by a tiny minority of a large community, the rest of whom are good people. But let's not cry "racism" every time there's a problem.
Sometimes pockets of trouble from a small minority in any ethnic minority can do the most amount of damage, i once see a group of black guys kick fcuk out of this white kid a night club, i also see black guys selling dope to young boys on the frontline in gloucester ,i also seen one or two treat white women like shit,Should that mean i should avoid them on the street or in a pub, or tell my black mates in the boxing club to piss off ?
I will not denounce a race because of what i have seen a minority do ,becuase most of the ones that i have got to know are as good as gold :)

Exactly, that's my point. I got done over by a group of Asian lads myself a few years back. But this doesn't cause me to hate the race as a whole, because I know other Asian guys, who are good mates.

I can't say the same about Gypsies, because I don't know any, because they generally stay in their own crowd (in my area, at least). This makes it hard for anyone to get to know them, and so you get people believing the stereotypes.

The travelling community has a terrible problem with its brand. People associate them with lawlessness, unruly antisocial behaviour and in general not playing by society's rules. Many people on this board with have experienced this - just the other week I was at whipsnade zoo, looking at a magnificant pride of lions taking an afternoon nap - next thing a group of travellers comes along and starts throwing stones at them to wake them up! A woman asked them to stop and was told to f off!

Now you get this kind of behaviour from all sorts of people, clearly not just travellers - the problem is that travellers lack the sort of strong public lobby that other minority groups enjoy. There are hardly any serious traveller role models in the public domain. Some of the best traveller ambassadors are either boxers or fellas who have forged reputations as bare-knuckle hard men. And these sorts do not really resonate with the public. Hence, the Daily Mail can write as many stories as it wants about bad behaviour from travellers and the public will lap it up - there will be no counterbalance, no traveller figure standing up in parliament or appearing on Question Time to represent the group. The best you tend to get is a die-hard human rights campaigner, who the British public don't have a great deal of time for anyway.

I live near the coast in Northern England. Each year during the summer we have a fair ground that comes, this festival goes on for a few days however the travelling community turn up around 2 weeks before hand and force themselves into a field close to a housing estate and shopping complex. When I say force they move boulders that prevent them from entering some land illegally. There is special police presence for the 3 day festival outside the field where a police unit is installed. There are lots of thefts around that time such as petrol being stolen and gardens broken into. I live around 500 meters away and I have a aluminium ladder in my garden. one of the travellers decided it belonged to them and my daughter who was only 16 stood in the garden and watched him walk by her to claim 'his' ladder. I was out and she called me so I called the police. Also the next door neighbour to me is a mechanic and had a car engine in his back yard, they decided that the engine also belonged to them and began dragging it across the rear car park to our homes. The police came when they effed off dropping my ladder and leaving the car engine on the floor.

My son works for a security company who do supermarket security down in Bretton in Peterborough. He get 'travellers' in each day claiming a full trolley for food and goods and even take TV's from the wall along with dvd players ps3 games and as much whiskey they can carry. They do not batter an eyelid as this property is 'theirs' it belongs to them. When approached all the security guards get is 'we have 3 caravans down the road, if you want to make an issue I can call them all up'

Where do travellers get their money from for their Land Rovers and gold watches? I have never seen a badly dressed traveller but they do not seem to have identities?

While I have no gripes with them, its not fair that they think my set of ladders from BandQ which cost me £100 belongs to them?

Although this is unrelated to anything I think Whipsnade is a beautiful wildlife park, not been since I left London. I can't believe people were chucking stones at the lions!

I think partly its an issue with self-identification... Going from both sides of what has been said on here... if you think Travellers are discriminated against, you might not want to claim to be a Traveller, you might keep it to yourself. So one section of regular people who are Travellers take themselves off the equation. And if you think that Travellers are all or mostly criminal, or 'relaxed about the law', well you aren't going to notice the ones that are getting on with their lives, are you? So when people think of Travelling people or Romany folk, they are going on a small sample because the rest of that sample is 'hiding' in a way that black people or asian people simply can't do. You can't spot a Polish person, or a Traveller, for example, until they open their mouth, but you can spot a Somalian from the other end of the road.

Sorry Mimmy,But i find this Quote hard to believe. Are you saying that if i went into that Supermarket & walk out with a Tv,I would get away with it because i was a Traveller with a few more caravans down the road ?
I'm sorry to hear that your ladders were nicked by Travellers,if i'm anywhere near the north coast of England this year,i will give ya a set.
Not all Travellers have Land Rovers & Gold Watches.
Travellers have been Travelling for years,it is something we do that will never change. Some Travellers leave a mess and some Don't. Travellers will be back this year Mimmy,so locked up everything.

That Cher Lloyd bird, and that guy that was in eastenders recently, David Essex I think. They r both from traveller families. Oh and that shane ward who won x factor. Those r arguably reasonable role models but no1 mentions their roots hardly. Isn't Wayne Rooney from traveller stock as well?

In fairness to mimmy an incident like this is where I based my assumptions on / facts I was told by coppers. A lot of travellers moved onto a field in Portland Dorset and we go to the local COOP and use it exactly the way Mimmy described. When challenged by the staff (my sister in law) being one they rang up others to come down and basically cause grief, men shouting, woman insulting, kids nicking even more stuff. A couple of staff were assaulted and spat on. When the police came to the house to take her statement we asked what are they going to do and were told basically nothing as by the time they find them, take statements, if lucky charge them they'll be gone so a waste of time and resource.

I asked surely they can be traced through their cars and property only to be told that there's more chance of finding gold on Portland than there is finding a traveller with tax, insurance or even an identity.

This incident is what shaped my assumptions hence why I was asking if its true across the traveller community.

People are just a bit soft and lacking in gumption. Travellers will often try and push a deal to the nth degree and will use all sorts of implied threat, ruses, patter and persuasion to try and seal that deal. If you don't want them to have something free/cheap or otherwise, tell them and dig your heels in. They will give up and go away or they will pay the price you want. They won't come back with trailer loads of people - that's just part of the patter. It's a game/part of life to them to see what they can get away with, it's how they get by. Once you understand that and see it for what it is, you'll find that they are largely decent people, albeit with slightly different sociological boundaries than most of the wider public.

Very interesting JLP, especially the boundaries point.

I've been renovating a house recently and putting building waste in my front garden. Anything remotely valuable will disappear within 5 minutes. This is absolutely fine by me - but I did find it a bit odd one morning when I was in my front garden a traveller fella walked straight through my gate and picked up an old radiator propped up against the wall next to me. As I said, I didn't mind at all the fella taking it and selling it for a few quid, but I would have expected him to at least ask if it was alright to come in the garden and get it!

Another funny example of boundaries - my mam worked in a shoe shop in York. Lots of traveller families would come in. On one memorable occasion, one of the kids, about 10 or 11 year old, pulled his trousers down and had a shit right in the shop doorway!

Yep. Some will walk all over you if given the chance.
I have had a few experiences with Nigerians and if you don't stand your ground and take no shit from them, they will generally walk all over you. It's in their culture to loud, gesticulate and generally be pretty bolshy. Best way to deal with that is play them at their own game.

I remember my dad telling a story about how he got to a job and he found some rooting through the skip looking for scrap, apparently they weren't happy when he told them he'd already sold all the scrap. I'm alright with travellers though, they're alright for a quick buck when getting rid of stolen goods.
