Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
This has always been one of my favourites...the atmosphere...the slugging match...Frazier's left hook along the ropes at the end of round 4...WOW! Never forget that...Fraizier's bolt of lightning. Quarry so brave but he just could not handle Frazier...Louis was too late in stopping the contest.
Frazier only lost to two men...you cant get too much better than that!
R.I.P - Joe and Jerry two absolute treasures of our game when Boxing ruled the World...

Evrenb, I bet we are thinking of the same punch.
The hook I recall momentarily put Jerry "out" on his feet but Jerry recovered and did not go down. But that punch was frightening because I wouldn't be too surprised that it did lasting damage right then and there. Jerry was one hell of a game fighter.
Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
I seem to remember he lingered out with a jab and then switched to a wicked left which left Jerry as though he had been shot..how he didn't go down is beyond me...always been one of my 'favourite' punches and one of the hardest I have ever seen thrown....wicked it was.yancey wrote:"Frazier's left hook along the ropes at the end of round 4" evrenbevrenb wrote:This has always been one of my favourites...the atmosphere...the slugging match...Frazier's left hook along the ropes at the end of round 4...WOW! Both would now be considered all time greats as cruiserweight champions had the division existed then.

The 5th round was further testament to the great sportsmanship of Joe Frazier. He clearly wanted Louis to stop the fight and did not want to hurt Quarry further.Il Duce wrote:Round 5

There were numerous calls from the crowd for Louis to stop the fight, including one very loud voice "Stop it, Joe!" which was Angelo Dundee, I think.
Louis really had no business refereeing this fight. I don't blame him, I blame the promotion.
Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
The notion that Cosell and others put forward that Frazier's style was made for Quarry is nonsense.
In truth, how in hell was Quarry ever supposed to deal with Frazier?
He tried head to head in the first match when they were both in their primes and got devastated.
In the second fight, Clancy had Quarry trying to move, but what did that do? Joe simply came and got him. Forced Jerry to trade.
Joe was great, Jerry was close to great. He could have been the champ in some other eras.

Great research, Duce.Il Duce wrote:Jerry Quarry at the end of Round 4, while taking a knee.
Jerry was battered by Joe Frazier throughout Round 4. A vicious left hook to the right Kidney area dropped
Jerry at the {2:58 Mark}. An exhausted Jerry could not hold off Joe anymore.
Jerry gallantly got up at the 5-Count, and walked back to his corner, but he was a beaten man. Jerry fought
a courageous battle, but was exhausted and had nothing left.
Head Cornerman - Gil Clancy should have stopped it right then and there. And not allow Jerry to come out
for Round 5.
It is interesting that Dunphy initially thought Quarry was not wearing a mouthpiece.
I can't help but feel that at least some of Jerry's later troubles stemmed from those two Frazier fights. He took some terrific shots.
Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
I remember watching a nationally televised baseball game the night of Frazier-Quarry II. Legendary Curt Gowdy was calling the baseball game and announced the result of the fight with the comment "looks like Smokin' Joe is back."
Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
The hook that Frazier landed on Quarry at 2:14 of round 4 was scary. Quarry actually went to sleep for a second or two. How he stayed up is amazing.

From where do you get all this information? Were you collecting newspapers about boxing? Do you find it in the Internet?

Il Duce wrote:Jerry Quarry and his wife, Arlene 'Charley' Charles
An emotionally-filled Dressing Room at Madison Square Garden. Jerry, who had high hopes of
a victory, had his Dream 'destroyed' by Joe Frazier.
Jerry and 'Charley' Quarry were crying uncontrollably in the Dressing Room after the one-sided bout.
While Jerry and 'Charley' were on the bench crying, the Dressing Room Door quietly opened.
It was Joe Frazier. Joe quietly walked over to Jerry who slowly stood up to meet Joe. Joe stuck out his
hand and said > "Jerry, you're a good fighter."
Jerry smiled, and shook Joe's hand and said > "Joe, you're one Helluva Man. Thanks."
Joe then turned to 'Charley' Quarry and shook her hand and said > "Your Husband is a Good Man. Take care of him."
'Charley' Quarry responded with a polite > "Thank You Joe. That means a lot to us."
Joe turned and quietly walked to the Door. As he looked back, Jerry and 'Charley' were still crying. Joe lifted up his
hand, and waved to the both of them and said > "Take care Jerry."
As Joe left, 'Charley' said out loud > "That man has Class. I don't care what Muhammad Ali says. That man has a lot of Class."

I wonder if things would have changed for Jerry had he retired right then and there. Same for his brother Mike.Il Duce wrote:Ring Magazine 'May 1974'
'Jerry Has A Notion Of A New Image'
Only one month earlier, Jerry Quarry graced the front cover of Ring Magazine.
Proclaimed as the 'New Image' Jerry Quarry. Now a smart-thinking boxer, and not the 'Stubborn-Slugger'.
Jerry said, that under the direction of Gil Clancy >
"I concentrate on counter-punching and boxing. My talent is in counter-punching and using my left hook."
But the Boxing Pundits said, that though Jerry is a talented counter-puncher, his natural instinct is to slug and
brawl when hit. He still has a bad defense, and still takes too many punches. He is the Modern-Day - George Chuvalo
'a catcher'.
After the Bout with Joe Frazier >
'Hard Sell For Some Hard Knocks'
-It's The Same Old Jerry Quarry-
Jerry again took too many punches. Jerry fought well in Round 1, and held his own for Round 2. Jerry did land some
good punches in Round 3, but took many as well. In Round 4, he was ineffectual and was gasping for air early in the
Round. A thudding left hook body punch by 'Smokin Joe' at the end of Round 4 finished him.
Foolishly, he was sent out for Round 5, where he took a brutal and one-sided beating.
Jerry Quarry > "I'm not sure I can make it back. I trained harder than I ever had for a fight. I just had nothing left
when I came out for Round 4. I had trouble seeing, but I wanted to go on."
I think Mama Quarry really pushed for Jerry to quit at that point.

After the debacle involving Joe Louis as the referee in the second bout between Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry, has there been a celebrity referee in an important bout since that time? Of course, who can forget the debacle involving Jersey Joe Walcott as the referee in the second world heavyweight championship bout between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston? For any important bout, there should only be a regular referee who has been the third man in recent bouts.

The New York State Athletic Commission was asleep at the switch when it allowed the second bout between Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry to refereed by Joe Louis even if the bigwigs of Madison Square Garden and the camps of Frazier and Quarry signed off on it.

Can you blame the Frazier team for not wanting anything to do with Perez?Il Duce wrote:Chuck,
Tony Perez was supposed to be the Referee.

Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
What? What was the problem? Tony was Smokin' Joes bestest buddy, and could always be counted on to give Joe a breather which could have come in handy if Jerry would have tapped him a bit harder than a good cricket match would allow.
Re: Joe Frazier vs. Jerry Quarry II ~ June 17, 1974
Nope, just offerin' up some contrary opinion. Just in case you didn't know it, Perez was criticized by both Ali and Frazier fans after the second go round. Though you can be counted on to be quite myopic on this matter.
Ali and Joe are both in my top five favorite fighters of all time. Both examples of the best of the best.
Any other off base assumptions you'd like to offer up?

I saw the second bout between Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry on television. Referee Joe Louis simply let a virtually helpless Quarry take far too much punishment instead of stopping the bout. In other words, I feel that Louis did a terrible job as a referee in the bout.

I understand this love affair that Yancey and Il Duce are engaged in. Based on their mutual loathing of a particular boxer. And I have no idea what may have happened had Perez officiated properly in their second encounter....it was simply a mistake...or series of mistakes. No one knows what the outcome would have been had he done a good job.yancey wrote:Duce, as a further explanation, Buzz still clings to the wet dream that Ali had Frazier in real trouble in the second round and that only the incompetence of Perez in ending the round early saved Joe.BoxBuzz wrote:Nope, just offerin' up some contrary opinion. I just pointed out that mistakes were made....that interfered with both men's business. I recognize that.
For those who don't.....it's all good. It's easy to have one's passion interfere with the recognition of superfluous complicating facts, physics, and photographic evidence.
