BM was Barry McGuigan, not Boxing Monthly but I was using my phone at the time and could not be arsed writing his name so said "BM".

But I am confused to what you mean anyway. "not my words"?! WTF are you on about fella?

I just said that Barry tries to talk in a way to make himself appear more intelligent than he probably is, often using words that are ill-fitting and often not ones you hear spoken but which are often typed. And in what you quoted, I was explaining that "discombobulate" was just one example.

Definite loss of man-points for not recognising an Alan Partridge quote (sort of) :shame:
Oh no, I love partridge. I hang my head in shame.

I will redeem myself, "DAN! DAN!......DAN!..................DAN!"

Was reading through this thread without taking notice of profile names as I tend to do, saw this and instinctlvly thought "I bet that's Goz"... Hope you are well buddy.

Never quite took McGuigan seriously after the way he spoke to Nicky Piper during the post fight analysis of Collins v Benn 2. I'd be neutral in tonight's fight were it not for Bazza. The bloke is a cock.
I'm good mate thanks. Hope you are too!

Good to see a few of the old heavy hitters showing they have still got a bit of that magic left!
I feel like that programme, Life on Mars!

Barry, having been handsomely paid to attend an amateur show was introduced by the host to a couple of volunteer coaches who asked if he would sign a couple of gloves so that they could be auctioned to raise funds for their respective clubs.

Barry duly obliged and chatted to them for a few seconds before taking the host to one side and giving him a major bollocking as he only ever sells his autograph! (allegedly  )

I got an autograph off him for nothing in his prime. I was about ten. He was at a sports shop in York promoting a bit of fitness kit, "Barrys Bullworker". The Press and local tv were there. My dad gave me the day off primary school to make my own way there... Thoughtful!

Got an autograph and a hand shake as a Kid at the Hamed vs Robinson fight. He was actually very busy heading back to the Sky studio when I yelled - "Barry" - he came back shook my hand and signed the programme. He then introduced me to Carl Thompson (arm in a sling), who chatted to me for about 5-10 minutes. Where we spoke about his win over Nicky Piper.

Thought it was a great touch of Barry who was clearly busy.

Yeah I always feel an anecdote about how a man behaves when at a boxing event, when surrounded with boxing fans, peers, journalists, reporters, cameras etc is a good indicator of their true personality.

Ok, I am taking the piss obviously but my point is correct. Everyone can behave in a reasonable way when in public, I am more inclined to believe how they behave when not in a public arena is a truer indicator to character. Hell I act nice in public but a knob behind closed doors (and on forums :OhYes: )

I met him a few years ago at a Khan fight and have nothing but good things to say about him. Happy to have a chat, photo with me and signed an autograph for me. Also said hello to the wife.

Mentioned to him where i was from as he was a bit of a hero (irish area of my city) and he remembered the place and club too from a few appearances he made

tobyh5 wrote:My old man is Irish so I grew with him being a bit of a hero and remember as a 11 year old being above a boozer my mum worked in watching him beat Pedroza. Then as time went on you could see some really arrogant traits coming out, beginning with how he must throw in words such as "discombobulate" into sentences when commentating as he did on some defunct channel Screensport which merged with Eurosport in about 1994. He would find ways to throw in ill-fitting long words to appear more intelligent than he actually is and still does this today. I was amazed at how awful his boxing knowledge was and the idiotic "insights" he used to give that made no sense or were not even close to reality. First time I realised that the ability to be a great fighter in the ring did not translate to having any bloody clue on how to dissect other fights.

Few years later, about 15 years ago, he was the special guest at a boxing dinner at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose and I got to meet him as I sponsored a bout. Complete prick. Arrogant twat.

Very good fighter (lucky to face a faded legend) who was exciting and united his people. But as a person, what a tosser as all the Frampton stuff shows.
Yeah it's really contemptible that an ex-boxer should attempt to expand his vocabulary in order to better his chances of a broadcasting career.

Real sign of arrogance that...

Tobyh5,

Perhaps you know Barry on a personal level and that is fine - but so far all of the "negative" comments about BM have been based on him in a "public" arena - including your anecdote. All of this "how he behaves with Frampton" is all relating to the public arena.

Yes, the charity dinner anecdotes mentioned here is not good form. He isn't the only sports star who has done this and I have heard stories of sports stars still flat out refuse to sign programmes etc when "pressured" at Charity events (Scott Gibbs being one)

What you say is spot on, but so far there is no example of how he privately acts, so how can we tell if he is arrogant etc. Personally, I don't think he uses discombobulate or temerity (my personal fave) for effect, but even if it is - is that arrogance or is that trying to be articulate (and learning new words) for the camera.

Tyson used "big words" regularly at post fight conferences - was he doing this for effect (because he has no education) is it is the way he talks?

The guys who refuse autographs have contracts with memorabilia firms. They're not allowed to sign.

Wow. Talk about exploiting every avenue. Pretty cynical.

I agree, Cholo but the other side of it is people asking for autographed items and then selling them on. I imagine the celebrities and sports stars feel they're getting robbed.

Fair points, cannot argue with that. I will amend myself to say that I personally feel he is arrogant and personally do not like his smirking.

No problem with anyone trying to improve themselves, hell I could do with that myself. I am amending to say that how he acts and how he does this lends weight to my own personal negative feels on him.

During his boxing days he seemed v humble ,boyish, charming even.

By the mid 90s to mid 2000s he had quite a rude ruthless persona as a,sky pundit....he would talk over people and act like he was number 1 he was notably disrespectful to gary mason and nicky piper.but it didnt disguise he was fairlyy knowledgable as a,pundit whilst lacking most of the charisma he had as a fighter and his opinion couldnt be influenced i give him credit there.

Like others said i think the tougher exterior developed in reaction to being screwed out of his career wealth so remorselessly

Than the punditry dried up a bit with the rise of steve nunce.
He seemed to become a little more humble on tv.

Now of course he"s been a great advisor to frampton and his son.

I thought his hof induction was very charasmatic he was mcguigan the fighter again.seeing him up there with stallone and the others was very entertaining.

By the way this is a great great thread.so many knowledgable posters with great writing and personal insights
Yeah I notiched the "talking over the other commentators" It's like he's scared that if he dosen't hog the microphone he'll lose the job. You can see he tries so hard to out shine the others by not letting them speak. That always realy bugged me about him, I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees that.

I always liked Barry, never had an issue with his commentary either, but I didn't like the way he was during the Quigg build up and the way he's been since he became involved with Frampton really. I don't give him shit for him trying to get the best for his man, why wouldn't he, but he's come across very poorly recently.

Like I said on another thread mate (I think, or maybe I just said it on this thread earlier) I think his emotional / financial/ etc 'investment' in Frampton is so extreme that all judgement and reason goes out of the window and he becomes completely irrational, to the point of pathological.

Its like watching one of those dads trying to live through his kids ring exploits but with the added extra elements of financial investment and general credibility thrown in (he's been saying Frampton would go to the top since day dot therefore his own credibility is on the line)

Basically like a perfect storm of circumstances which make him utterly kneejerk and insanely twitchy and irrational.
