Groves has a great chance of beating Callum Smith in the final, but he'd be considered the underdog by boxing insiders.
Eubank Jr. insists he's remaining at 168lbs, but he's too small for that weight class. Chris needs to conform with normal training techniques and spend a year refining his skills. He was exposed badly tonight, even though the cut hindered him significantly.
Why would Smith be favourite?
When all the entrants of the 168lbs version of the WBSS was initially announced, Callum Smith was not only the betting favourite, but the majority of boxing insiders thought he'd win the tournament also.
The vast majority of the very same set of people also suspected that George Groves would beat Chris Eubank Jr.
Last night, George Groves defeated an inexperienced fighter that was not only far less skilled than himself, but possessed an eye injury, was also much smaller and also had less power than himself.
In stark contrast, Callum Smith is 6' 3", is relatively heavy-handed and can box.
Last night, George Groves beat a natural middleweight when he himself had rehydrated to an enormous 184lbs. He won't benefit from that sort of size advantage against Smith.
When Smith inevitably defeats Juergen Braehmer, boxing insiders will reiterate their previous prediction and proclaim their belief that he's the favourite to win this tournament.

Eubank the arrogant young braggart got utterly schooled and charged in with wild swings that looked like a drunken school boy fighting a grown man.

Eubank Jr. was indeed the betting favourite amongst mainstream casuals, probably because of the legacy behind his father's surname, but the majority of boxing insiders actually favoured George Groves.
I previously posted a lengthy list of predictions those boxing pundits, ex-pros, trainers, promoters etc. who I class as "insiders".

A lot of boxing insiders appear to be "sold" on the physical dimensions of the Brit, his amateur pedigree, coupled with him passing their proverbial “eyeball” test.
He isn't the first fighter in the history sport that has had a great amount of praise lavished upon by genuine boxing people without them requiring the need for verification (such as having proved his talents inside the ring by defeating top-notch opposition).
For example: Gilberto Ramirez is perceived by many as the top dog of the 168lbs division, but his resume, fighting style and amateur pedigree doesn’t seem to warrant his possession of such a prestigious title.
Zurdo’s resume may be slightly better than Smith’s, by the smallest of margins, but his amateur pedigree and fighting style isn’t particularly impressive.

he's sh1t on the 'eyeball test' to anyone with the discernment to see, quote me a boxing 'insider' who even mentions the 'eye test' or how Smith
looks, because the 'proverbial eye test' is probably the
least impressive thing about Smith, and I include his incredibly sketchy record in that. just to explain it for you:
his feet are slow and heavy
his head movement is terrible
he is a stiff upright target, stiff knees, stiff at the waist
he struggled to establish the jab against a much smaller man in Skoglund, because his feet are so slow
his attacks are ponderous and predictable and have very little variety.
he also seems to mark up quite quickly
apart from that he looks like a million dollars

I can't really say that I know too much about Callum Smith, since I've only witnessed a few of his bouts.
However, he was immediately installed as the favourite to win the WBSS tournament by both the bookmakers and also by genuine boxing insiders.
They seem to know far more about Callum Smith than I do, so I can't question their judgement on this matter.
For all we know, they could be right or they could be wrong, but only time will tell either way.

So your source for these 'boxing insiders' and their supposed 'proverbial eye test' on Smith is basically, he was made favourite by the bookmakers? And you have no links or sources of any 'boxing insiders' talking about the 'proverbial eye test.

You only need to perform a few searches on Google to see that Smith was immediately installed at the betting favourite to win the WBSS. The same applies if you also search for the opinions of boxing insiders, like Tony Bellew, who favour the Brit to win the tournament.
I'm not spending a lot of time aggregating easily accessible information supplied by multiple sources, since you can do this yourself.
You'd only end up ignoring my post anyway, even if I proved my claims.

You made up your claims about boxing insiders.
It was one of those insidious little lies, you just tacked on a bit of made-up detail to the bit about the bookmakers favouritism for Smith, to try to add some ballast to your assertion.
And you're a massive hypocrite, you always demand sources from other people but when challenged fall back on a pathetic 'you can do the searches yourself', which is patently not a level of proof you would accept from anyone else.

Are you seriously suggesting that Callum Smith wasn't installed as the betting favourite to win the 168lbs WBSS when the tournament was originally announced?
Do you care to research this prior to responding to my question?

I always provide proof, but I am getting bored of doing all the legwork for lazy fûckîng bastards.
Somebody questioned my belief about boxing insiders almost unanimously favouring Groves to beat Chris Eubank Jr.
So I provided a huge list of pundits predictions to justify my claim, which was subsequently ignored. People ignore anything that doesn't fit their preferred narrative.
If you can't spend five minutes Googling the subject, don't expect others to do it for you.
If you don't feel that Smith was the favourite to win the WBSS when the tournament was originally announced, then prove it.

I'm not taking sides, but I do recall seeing some wagering websites where Smith was actually made the tourney favorite.
I thought it was somewhat crazy considering that his resume has nary a true quality opponent on it. But that's what the bookies say.
Smith might even be a bigger choice now. Since 7-1 underdog Braehmer pulled out and they replaced him with a virtual novice.
Smith is a whopping 50-1 favorite to pummel unbeaten Holzken on Saturday.
And with Groves very questionable to be ready for the June finals, Smith could easily live up to those surprising pre-tournament odds and win this thing in a walk.
